Chapter 23. The Forced Migration of Serbs and the Dismemberment of Yugoslavia
By Branka Al-Hamdy, Washington DC
1. Introduction
The Western governments and inter-governmental organizations, with the assistance from numerous Western institutions, have in the last decades engaged in the deliberate and systematic destruction of the Serbs of the Balkans through expulsions, forced migrations and attacks on Serb culture and traditions. This has been carried out with the intent to eliminate or marginalize Serbs in all areas outside of Serbia, and several areas inside Serbia where there are sizeable minorities. In each instance a new "victim" is identified, creating ever-fresh examples of "Serb intolerance to people who are different." A whole new "industry" of humanitarian activism in the Balkans has provided a powerful, profit-motivated impetus to the Something-Has-To-Be-Done policy in the Balkans.
The meteoric rise in power of foreign-sponsored "liberation" movements in Croatia in the late Eighties was the first overt sign of things to come. Just as in WWII, the population was overtaken and overwhelmed by events. Foreign mercenaries were pouring in, along with the most modern weaponry, supplies and cash. Not that they had no supporters within Croatia. The elderly Ustasha sympathizers, "westernized" skinheads, decrepit intellectuals and opportunists of every colorall soon understood that the West is on their side.
Following the tragic civil war in Bosnia, which was deliberately ignited and artificially prolonged by the United States, a new round of extermination of Serb people was launched. Under NATOs watchful eyes, tens of thousands of Serbs were driven out of Sarajevo and its suburbs. The Serb Republic portion of Bosnia quickly became a NATO-run reservation. The Dayton Peace Agreement was dead on arrival.
Everybody knew that intervention in Kosovo was just a matter of time. The turmoil almost always pays off for the perpetrator: if the ""peaceful" means result in a secession, so much the better. But if not, the process of instigation becomes "proof" of the problem, which then the "Moral West" is compelled to solve.
Enormous sums of money have been spent by one organization alone, George Soross Open Societies Institute, in "seeding" ethnic tensions. It has helped fund "parallel" institutions in Kosovoeducational, cultural and health care organizationsaimed at luring Kosovo Albanians away from State-funded institutions.
2. Causes
But why? As has always been the case in history, such tragedies are the product of many, often interdependent factors. In this tragedy, the most implacable factor was ideological, as such not amenable to reason and even self-interest. It includes religious and cultural hate often dressed up in the respectable garb of "geopolitical" or "strategic" objectives. Included in the mix is the Western military alliance's search for its identity and the military industry's need for fresh enemies and profits. On the economic front, the expand-or-collapse demands of Western economies contributed the general pressure on Western mercantile governments to exploit new resources and markets.
3. The Western Values Crusade
The history of the West is replete with a well-documented track-record of virulent hate towards Old Christians in general and Serbs in particular. This is not the first attempt at the extermination of Serbs in the Balkans. The violence visited upon Serbs, such as the latest weeks-long orgy of Kosovo's KLA under the supervision of NATO is usually described in well-crafted, thought-out phrases, such as "grubby spasm of violence in the final phase of the Yugoslav army pullout." Reality is no longer an obstacle. Weeks after the NATO took charge of Kosovo; the gutted mediaeval monasteries are merely the victims of "enraged ethnic Albanians seeking revenge on a cultural symbol of their hated Yugoslav oppressors."
Serb culture does not appear to have a future in the Western cultural sphere. The ancient history of the Serbs as one of the ancient peoples of the Balkans is inadmissible in the Western establishment academia. The Serb culture that clung to life in the Balkans from the time our Indo-European ancestors spread across Europe is now in the process of succumbing to a combination of Western arrogance, economic greed, ignorance and hatred.
From Pope Honorius III (1221) who scorned Serbs as "foxes, rebels, and perfidious beasts" to Gregory IX (1234) who painted the phantom of Serbian "perfedia hereticorum." Boniface VIII (1298) called them "evil vermin," John XXII (1319) "filthy spots of infidelity" and the Spanish inquisitor Torquemada scorned the Old Christians as "pestilentes homines."
In order to justify the mass executions and forced conversions in World War II, Catholic clergy in Croatia claimed that these were really Catholics led back into the lap of the holy church. And let us not forget Cardinal Pacelli, the later Pope Pius XII, who gave Germany still valid Concordat with Nazis. When Yugoslavia rejected the Concordat in 1937, he proclaimed: "The day will come when not a few will regret that they have rejected this magnanimous and generous offer to their country by Christ's earthly kingdom." (Yugoslav Auschw)
The State of Croatiathat was not just talk. Not to be outdone by Pope Pius XII, in 1991 the Pontiff visited the newly independent State of Croatia to pray on the grave of Cardinal Stjepinac. This was the same Stjepinac who, as the Archbishop and Military Vicar of the Croatia's Ustasha's Army, presided over one of the most extreme forms of clerical fascism in modern history.
This event marked in the minds of many the return of the carnage in the Balkans. Today, the opportunistic media and a shockingly high number of university professors, think-tanks and other self-proclaimed experts, ridicule the Serbs for their deluded sense of "victimization." But those who know the history of the Balkans understand this too well. This round is only the latest attempt in the long string of attacks on this small European culture and religious community of Old Christianity.
Charles Boyd, former Deputy Commander in Chief, U.S. European Command (1992-1995) stated it well in his 1995 publication (Making Peace with the Guilty): "Ethnic cleansing evokes condemnation only when it is committed by Serbs, not against them." This was and remains the only constant in the policy of the West in the Balkans.
4. and Genocide
The phrase "ethnic cleansing" did not come into use by accident. The policy of the "Independent State of Croatia" during WWII called for the cleansing of Orthodox Christian Serbs, the phrase often used in speeches and public documents. By resurrecting it in the nineties to mean something "Serbs do," it has a power to inoculate, to minimize the shock the Western public may have felt upon learning the truth of what was done to Serbs during World War II. But learn we will, for truth never gets out of date.
Irrespective of any other goals that the Western Alliance, in concert and/or in competition with each other, have established for themselves in the Balkans (economic, geopolitical, etc.), the Western leadership has consistently over the past decade forced one ethnic groupthe Serbsto give up their land to others. Refusal to do so, especially any attempt at armed struggle to preserve their property, has always been described as "aggression."
The pattern of demonization has turned into predictable propaganda rituals. Mick Hume, the editor of British LM Magazine created a controversy, by suggesting that " you can almost write about it before it happens." "You know it would be only a matter of time before somebody discovered a concentration camp, then there was going to be a rape camp and then there was going to be mass graves and then aerial photographs, all supposed to make us believe the Serbs are the new Nazis."
To quote the Chief Rabbi of Yugoslavia: "Even American Jews were not able to withstand this propagandist poison, although they were especially expected to do so. Unfortunately, they do not recognize the Nazi and racist nature of the Serbophobic dogma. They did not identify Serbophobia as a twin-sister of anti-Semitism, this being not unknown in the United States."
Over the last decade, the West has reduced the area where Serbs live by hundreds of thousands of square miles, pushing Serbs into overcrowded reservations. Having by now nearly achieved their goals, all that remains to do is to destroy and occupy their country. It is clear that only through occupation can the West prevent Serbia from having a voice in the international community and with it a chance of survival.
By occupation, the ethnic and religious re-engineering of the Balkans would become permanent. The Serbs of the Balkans are in the process of becoming the new Palestinians, and the flash-point in the Western expansion to the East. One of the most important goals of Western politicians is to pin the blame for the tragedy of the Serbian people on their leadership. In Yugoslavia today, over a million refugees of this Made-in-the-West tragedy live in abject poverty. Overrun by refugees, isolated by economic sanctions, safely outside the range of the watchful eyes of the selectively outraged Western mediaYugoslavia is lectured on the need to become democratic. Meanwhile, the European Palestine is depraved of the basic infrastructure necessary to maintain public health and prevent starvation.
5. Case for Genocide
As the propaganda strives to highlight each event in the Balkans separately in order to build the case for actions taken against Serbs, the slow poison of dehumanization is taking its toll: we do not see a pattern of genocide, but a pattern of "behavior" resulting in "just" punishment. Western leaders (Clinton, Blair) are calling the aggression on Yugoslavia a "Just War." A "Just War" is being waged against the heretics, the people who we do not consider human. Therefore, the established norms of war and international laws are suspended. Killing off a population, starvation and complete cultural eradication are acceptable tools in a "Just War." The bombing of Yugoslavia was carried out against the civilian population.
6.The Case of Krajina
The most macabre of all the deceptions has been the story of Vukovar, which became the first city in post-war history to be subjected to the torture and mass killing of its Serbian populationonly to be redefined as the symbol of Croatian martyrdom. In Operation Storm, the U.S. private firm, Military Personnel Resources, participated in the execution of the worst population expulsion since World War II. In one week in August 1995, the majority of Krajina was emptied of its estimated 300,000 population. The conservative estimate of dead civilians is 14,000.
7. Kosovo: NATO Accountability for KLA Genocide
Not a day goes by that the new stories are not supplied of the atrocities of Serbs in Kosovo. Behind the shrill noises, the Serb population and Serb culture are being exterminated. As the medieval monasteries burn, the shrill media is calling for the Orthodox Church to pay the price for being an "accomplice" in Serbia's quest for "ethnic purity." Unless the current direction is reversed, there is clearly no place for Old Christians in the West's quest for New Values. While Serbs, Roma, Gorani, Turks, Montenegrins and Macedonians all find these old walls to be their last and only refuge against the new NATO partners in crime, the KLA, the West blames the Church for harboring "collaborators"!
8. Reservations
Serb Republic of Bosnia is a glorified name for a reservation run by NATO. The myth of the collective guilt of the Bosnian Serbs has been kept alive by the "Srebrenica massacre." This event resulted in the leadership of Bosnian Serbs being indicted for war crimes. Yet, until today, the story of 8,000 Moslems killed in the aftermath of the fall of Srebrenica is being repeated without any evidence to back it up. The United States did not cooperate with the Tribunal to produce the evidence.
9. Dehumanizing Propaganda and the Advocacy of Annihilation
Volumes of print and other media have been produced that systematically dehumanize Serbian people. The public is bombarded with "atrocities," "barbarities," "ethnical purity" and other characteristics describing the behavior and the state of mind of the entire Serbian nation. Nothing can be further from truth. Yugoslavia and Serbia have been a home for many nationalities and religions. The descendants of runaway American slaves jumped off the ship over hundred years ago to find home there. Today they call themselves Serbs. The Serbs are a Mediterranean culture, which unlike its more prosperous northern and western European neighbors has been comfortable with people of different ethnicity and skin color.
Western leaders in politics, government, academia and media have the power to go on record against those who are advocating a "final solution" for Serbia. They have the bully pulpit from which they can distance themselves from such ideologies and agendas. The leadership of the West has lost its moral compass in the pursuit of their imagined empires and obsolete nineteen-century concept of "geopolitical advantage." The notion that the West will provide the world with the model of collaboration, coexistence and peace lays shattered in ruins.
