July 31, 2005: NYC - Mass Antiwar Mobilization
New York City Council Member Charles Barron will be talking about his
fight to kick military recruiters out of public schools. Thanks to Council member Charles Barron, New York City has taken a big step towards kicking military recruiters out of our public schools.
The Troops Out Now Coalition joined Council Member Barron at a Press Conference at City Hall on Wednesday, July 27 to announce the introduction of legislation into the City Council that would ban military recruiters from NYC public schools.
The military is aggressively engaged in recruiting young people in the public schools. The military concentrates its recruiting efforts on communities of color where, due to poverty, inadequate education, bleak job opportunities, and misinformation, young people are easy prey for
military recruiters. Parents generally tend to be unaware that public schools are required to provide the military with lists of student names
and addresses. The proposed law, which will be taken up by the City Council's Education Committee, would amend the New York City Charter, in relation military recruiting in New York City Schools. The law will:
- Prohibit representatives of the armed services from utilizing any board of education facilities for the purpose of recruitment.
- Prohibit the board of education from disclosing any student information to the military without prior written authorization from such students'
parents or guardians.
It will be up to community activists, students, youth organizers, antiwar activists, and parents to turn a piece of legislation in to a rallying call for mass organizing strong enough to ban the war makers from our schools.
Education and Jobs NOT War - Bring the Troops Home Now - Kick the Recruiters Out of Our Schools.
Regional Mobilizing Rally & Speakout
Dear Friends, The Tide is Turning!
Troops Out Now!
The majority of the people are against the war - and they want the troops home NOW!Question: Is it important for us to create some antiwar heat in the summer streets? The answer to that question from a strategic perspective, or any other perspective is a resounding
YES! COME TO HARLEM - Sunday JULY 31, 1:00 - 5:00 pm the Marcus Garvey Park Bandshell 124th St. & 5 th Ave. in Manhattan
RALLY FOR HOUSING NOT WAR! Live Music, Guest Speakers, and Food Many of you joined with the thousands who rallied in Harlem on March 19, the 2nd anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. We rallied then in Marcus Garvey Park and then marched to Central Park and to the mayor's private residence to make the point that the war and occupation is not only killing people, it's robbing poor communities of the funds that are needed for affordable housing amongst other things.
We need to continue to drive home that message - the war is also a war against the poor at home- that is what the July 31 rally is about. And we will connect the struggle in our communities to the struggles of people standing against war and occupation everywhere--in Iraq, Palestine, Haiti, Afghanistan, the Philippines, and elsewhere.
On to Washington DC on Sept. 24 -- The Harlem rally on July 31 will also kick-off the mobilizing for the antiwar march on Washington in September - as well as the Millions More Movement events on October 14-16.
COME BACK TO HARLEM WITH US -- Make a difference, bring your friends and family on July 31. in addition to speakers there will be great music and cultural performances, and food will be available. Bring the Troops home now ! Housing, Jobs, Healthcare and Education - not War and Occupation !
