Martin Luther King Day March Against Racism

January, 2008
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
This year, let’s help put the meaning back into the Martin Luther
King holiday on January 21st by marching against racism, oppression, war,
poverty and division.
In New York, the march will assemble at 1 PM for an opening rally at 32nd Street and
7th Avenue, near the offices of radio station WABC (which recently put Don Imus
back on the air!). Then we will march to Columbus Circle and rally outside of
CNN’s offices (located inside the Time Warner building).
One need only open one’s eyes to see that we are in the midst of a rising
storm of racism, xenophobia and bigotry including neo-fascist appeals,
unprecedented in many decades. The racism is not just coming from the fringes;
it’s been deemed respectable and popular.
It is outrageous that Lou Dobbs is able to spew racism and hatred against
immigrants on CNN six nights a week. It is an insult to all of us that
Don Imus is already back on the air after his vile denigration of Black people
and women.
It is also dangerous. When the economy is headed downwards,
and more of us are losing our homes, our apartments and our jobs, the system
works overtime to set up scapegoats to divert our anger away from systemic
injustice and have us fighting each other instead of the system.
Let’s start off 2008 by letting the world know that we
are not going to fall for attempts to divide us. Black, Latin Asian, Arab.
Native and white, we will stand together with our undocumented sisters and
brothers. Women, men, lesbian/gay/bi/trans and straight, working people, youth
and seniors, we will stand together against gentrification and the destruction
of public housing from Harlem to New Orleans.
Students, trade unionists, community organizers, and anti-war activists must
make the fight against police brutality, for freedom for the Jena 6, and for an
end to the war against Black youth and all people of color our common struggle.
We will demand justice for Sean Bell. We will stand with John White, who faces
jail for defending his family against a racist mob.
Together we will usher in a new year of Black and Brown unity, and breathe new
life and strength into words like solidarity. We will stand with our Muslim
sisters and brothers who face harassment and persecution.
If we can overcome the doubts, the fragmentation, and anything else that keeps
us down or divided, the movement for economic and social justice will overcome
greed, war, anything else that stands in its way not only here, but across the
planet.
In 2008, we can start by making King’s holiday real again.
We need your support and involvement!
We invite you to join in the March Against Racism to honor Dr. King’s
legacy on Jan. 21st.
We also ask for your participation and support in many ways. A financial
donation would help cover the organizing costs for this critically important
protest - you can donate online at http://troopsoutnow.org/donate.shtml.
Joining in a preparatory work session to make banners, signs, put together
literature and press packets, and help with many needed tasks, at our office
(see above address), on Friday, January 18th, at 3:00 p.m., would be a great
help.
Yours in the struggle,
The Martin Luther King Day March Against Racism
Coalition
