asesinato del líder independentista Filiberto Ojeda Ríos
Last Friday, September 23, 2005, while the pro-independence movement in
Puerto Rico was commemorating the 137th anniversary of El Grito de Lares, the
day the first Republic of Puerto Rico was proclaimed in 1868, Filiberto Ojeda
Ríos, respected and legendary leader of the liberation movement was being
assassinated by FBI sharpshooters just a few miles away in the western coast of
the island.
The despicable and cowardly act by these repressive forces proves once more
that the United States government is the main source of world terrorism
today.
The massive FBI operation included three hundred FBI agents that surrounded
Ojeda Ríos’ residence in Hormigueros while he and his wife Elma
Beatriz Rosado Barbosa were inside. At least 2 helicopters hovered above,
thirty vehicles on land, and close to 2 dozen sharpshooters specially trained
that were flown in from Virginia.
According to a statement by Rosado Barbosa, who was able to leave the house
thanks to the pleas of her husband who also advised of the need of an
eyewitness, Ojeda Ríos had shouted in several occasions that he would
surrender to Jesús Dávila, a reporter. In spite of this, the FBI shot
at least 100 times, hitting Ojeda Ríos once on the right clavicle.
This atrocious crime underscores the colonial status of the island, the very
essence of Ojeda Ríos’ life struggle. The colonial administration,
including its police force, was not informed of the operation until hours later
and the FBI did not permit the entering of the house until they, the FBI,
allowed, almost 24 hours later! As a result, according to the forensic report,
Ojeda Ríos was coldly left to bleed to death because not even medical
personnel were allowed to enter the residence.
The entire operation was executed under a heavy cloud of secrecy. Rosado
Barbosa was arrested and taken to the federal prison, from where she was
finally released hours later. Throughout Friday and until late Saturday, the
FBI refused to give any information to the government, the media, independence
activists, religious leaders or the people of Puerto Rico except that
“the operation is still going on”, even after they knew that Ojeda
Ríos had died.
Seventy two year old Ojeda Ríos was a leader of the clandestine Popular
Boricua Army (EPB-Macheteros) – Machete Wielders. He had an arrest
warrant from a Connecticut District Court that convicted him in absentia for 55
years for his presumed participation in the 1983 famous $7 million Wells Fargo
robbery. This robbery, according to many sources, went to fund toys for poor
children and the Macheteros’ work.
This brutal assault carried out precisely on the Grito de Lares day was
meant to execute Ojeda Ríos and send a renewed message to the Puerto Rican
independence movement that the struggle for independence will not be tolerated
by the USA. It follows the long history of brutal repression against the Puerto
Rican movement. The US government has issued 125 arrest warrants against other
Puerto Rican independence activists.
We strongly condemn this atrocious crime committed by the United States
government. We send our most heartfelt sympathy to Ojeda Ríos’
widow, Elma Beatriz Rosado Barbosa and family; and stand in solidarity with our
brothers and sisters in the Puerto Rican liberation movement in particular and
the Puerto Rican people in general, since this has been an affront against all
the people in the island and in the Diaspora.
This action is also part of the strategy by the United States to eliminate
the leadership of the progressive movements that are rising up against US
neoliberal program in Latin America and the Caribbean. It follows the
objectives of Plan Colombia and the extradition of Colombian insurgency to the
US, the kidnapping of Haiti’s President Aristide and the subsequent
invasion of that country resulting in hundreds of deaths, the campaign of
destabilization and intervention against the Venezuelan Bolivarian government
of Hugo Chávez and the ever present criminal blockade of Cuba and
imprisonment of the 5 Cuban heroes.
We call on all progressive individuals and organizations in the United
States to raise our voices in condemnation of this latest US crime and to stand
in solidarity with the Puerto Rican people. We must put an end to US terrorism,
and prevent another witchunt against the Puerto Rican progressive movement.

El pasado viernes 23 de septiembre, 2005, mientras el movimiento
pro-independencia de Puerto Rico conmemoraba el 137º aniversario del Grito
de Lares, día en que fue proclamada la primera república de Puerto
Rico en 1868, Filiberto Ojeda Ríos, líder legendario muy respetado
del movimiento de liberación estaba siendo asesinado por francotiradores
del FBI a pocas millas del lugar en la costa occidental de la isla.
Este despreciable y cobarde acto por estas fuerzas represivas prueba una vez
más que el gobierno de Estados Unidos es la fuente principal del
terrorismo en el mundo de hoy.
La operación masiva del FBI incluyó 300 agentes del FBI que
rodearon la residencia de Ojeda Ríos en Hormigueros mientras que él y
su esposa Elma Beatriz Rosado Barbosa estaban adentro. Por lo menos 2
helicópteros sobrevolaban el hogar, treinta vehículos en tierra, y 20
francotiradores entrenados especialmente que fueron llevados desde
Virginia.
De acuerdo a una declaración de Rosado Barbosa, quien logró salir
de la casa gracias a las súplicas de su marido quien también
aconsejó sobre la necesidad de un testigo presencial, Ojeda Ríos
había gritado en varias ocasiones que él se entregaría a
Jesús Dávila, un reportero. A pesar de eso, el FBI disparó por
lo menos 100 veces, hiriendo a Ojeda Ríos una vez en la clavícula
derecha.
Este crimen atroz señala el estado colonial de la isla, esencia de la
vida de lucha de Ojeda Ríos. ¡La administración colonial,
incluyendo su policía, no estuvo informada de la operación hasta
horas más tarde y el FBI no permitió entrar a nadie a la casa hasta
que ellos lo permitieran, casi 24 horas después! Consecuentemente,
según el informe forense, Ojeda Ríos fue dejado fríamente morir
desangrado porque incluso no se permitió al personal médico entrar a
la residencia.
La operación entera fue ejecutada bajo una nube de secreto. Rosado
Barbosa fue arrestada y llevada a la prisión federal, de donde finalmente
salió horas más tarde. Durante el viernes y hasta tarde el
sábado, el FBI rechazó dar cualquier información al gobierno, a
los medios, a activistas independentistas, a líderes religios@s o al pueblo de Puerto Rico excepto que “la
operación todavía sigue”, incluso después que supieron que
Ojeda Ríos había muerto. Ojeda Ríos de 72 años, era
líder del clandestino Ejército Popular Boricua - Macheteros.
Tenía orden de arresto de una corte de distrito de Connecticut que lo
condenó en absentia a 55 años por su alegada participación en el
famoso robo de $7 millones de la Wells Fargo en 1983. Este robo, según
fuentes, pagó por juguetes para niños pobres y financió el
trabajo de los Macheteros.
Este brutal asalto realizado exactamente el día del Grito de Lares fue
para ejecutar a Ojeda Ríos y enviar un mensaje al movimiento
independentista de Puerto Rico que la lucha por la independencia no será
tolerada por los EEUU. Es continuación de la larga historia de
represión brutal contra el movimiento puertorriqueño. El gobierno de
los EEUU ha emitido 125 órdenes de detención contra otros activistas
independentistas.
Condenamos fuertemente este crimen atroz cometido por el gobierno de Estados
Unidos. Enviamos nuestras más sentidas condolencias a la viuda de Ojeda
Ríos, Elma Beatriz Rosado Barbosa y familia; y afirmamos nuestra
solidaridad para con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en el movimiento de
liberación y con el pueblo de Puerto Rico en general, puesto que esto ha
sido una afrenta contra tod@s l@s puertorriqueñ@s en la
isla y en la diáspora.
Esta acción es también parte de la estrategia de los Estados
Unidos para eliminar la directiva de los movimientos progresistas que se
están levantando contra el programa neoliberal de los EEUU en América
Latina y el Caribe. Sigue los objetivos del Plan Colombia y la extradición
de la insurgencia colombiana a los EEUU, del secuestro del presidente Aristide
y la subsiguiente invasión de Haití resultando en centenares de
muertes, de la campaña de desestabilización e intervención
contra el gobierno venezolano bolivariano de Hugo Chávez y del continuo
bloqueo criminal de Cuba y encarcelamiento de los 5 héroes cubanos.
Exhortamos a todas las personas y organizaciones progresistas en los Estados
Unidos a levantar nuestras voces para condenar este último crimen de los
EEUU y brindar solidaridad al pueblo de Puerto Rico. Debemos poner fin al
terrorismo de los EEUU, y prevenir otra persecución contra el movimiento
progresista puertorriqueño.
