Mumia has been named the first honorary citizen of Paris since Pablo Picasso
The highly respected broadcast journalist and critic Mumia Abu-Jamal was wrongly
sent to death row in Pennsylvania nearly 25 years ago. Since then, he’s
written five books and continues to make weekly broadcasts about a vast array
of topics—from exposing the vicious prison-industrial complex to the disastrous
U.S. war in Iraq and the relentless struggle of African Americans from New Orleans
to Harlem for social and economic justice. No wonder Mumia is known as “the
voice of the voiceless.”
Now, after countless legal battles, street demonstrations, and worldwide protests,
an appeal of Mumia’s case will be heard for the first time in Federal
Appeals Court in Philadelphia on May 17. The court will rule on the following:
a new trial, life in prison without parole, or execution. Because this is Mumia’s
last chance for a new trial, the movement to free Mumia is calling for everyone
to be in Philadelphia on May 17 when oral arguments will be heard. (For bus
information call 212-330-8029 or 212-633-6646.)
Writers want to pay tribute to Mumia’s prowess as a writer and to add
their voices to all those demanding he receive a new trial.
