Help Set-up a Summer of Resistance Organizing Center in Your Area!

Dear friends,

Out of the successful May 7th Rally for Mumia at Madison Square Garden, the International Action Center has called for a Summer of Resistance with militant mass demonstrations and direct action at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles on August 13, and the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia July 29. These mass actions at the Conventions at the two big-business parties will demand:

New Trial for Mumia NOW Shut Down the Prison Industrial Complex Stop Police Terror End the Racist Death Penalty

We want to encourage everyone to join us at an initial organizer's meeting on Saturday, June 3 at 12 noon at 362 Capp Street (btwn 18th and 19th) in San Francisco. We need everyone's input and skills. We also want to encourage all of our contacts to help establish Summer of Resistance Organizing Centers in your region or area to build for this exciting mass mobilization to Los Angeles.

As our first step in the Summer of Resistance, the IAC has called for National Days of Coordinated Actions to Stop the execution of Shaka Sankofa.(previously known as Gary Graham) and to end the Death Penalty The state of Texas has set an execution date for Sankofa on June 22nd. Plans for the local Bay Area event will be discussed at the June 3rd Meeting.

Also, ongoing organizing is happening nationally to pack the courtroom and have demonstrations on Mumia's first day in federal court. In an important development in Mumia's legal case, Judge Yohn has granted permission for Mumia's defense team to file a supplement brief on the issues raised by the recent Supreme Court decisions on the Effective Death Penalty Act (the two Williams v. Taylor cases). The defense team has until June 2 to file this brief, which cannot exceed 15 pages. The prosecution has until June 23 to reply. It means that the first hearing in Mumia's habeas petition before Judge Yohn will be not be set until after June 23.

Please call the IAC at (415) 821-6545 for more info on Mumia's and Shaka Sankofa's cases, as well as resources for plugging into the organizing for the Summer of Resistance mass mobilization.
