The demo begins on the W. Side city hall at 10am and there will be a march to the liberty bell and a rally there at noon.
Liberation Demonstration for Mumia and Against US Oppression Across the Globe Tomorrow: July 4th at 10am meet at the W. side of Philly City Hall Then march to 5th and Market (the liberty bell) and have a demonstration at noon Recent Update: Now Bojah and the Insurrections (described as spoken soul hop (spoken word+soul+hip hop) from Boston will be performing as people arrive at 10am at City Hall. They are very good so please spread the word.
OnaMOVE! We need alot of visuals out for the July 4th demo for Mumia and against US oppression across the globe. Please bring signs and banners not only relating to Mumia but to all issues that relate to US oppression. We want a wide range of struggles to be represented so please spread the word. Also we remind everyone who can to bring cameras and recording devices as a security measure. Please bring them, encourage others to and keep them visible at the demonstration. On July 4th, 2002, there will be a LIBERATION DEMO FOR MUMIA AND AGAINST OPPRESSION WORLDWIDE On July 4th Secretary of State Colin Powell is being awarded the liberty medal. Last September Powell was scheduled to speak at the UN sponsored World Conference Against Racism. But the US decided not to send Powell, saying they didn't want to legitimize this world gathering by having him attend. They decided to send a low-level delegation to join the European and Israeli delegations. Then on Sept. 4th, after the conference had barely started the US delegation walked out, saying it could not tolerate discussion where Israel's intensifying brutality against the Palestinian people was being condemned.There was another reason for the walkout. The US knew there would be discussion of racism in the US - racial profiling, the death penalty, roundups of black and latino kids for prisons, the systematic mistreatment of the Native American peoples. They decided to leave before their long criminal record of past slavery and modern national oppression could be paraded before the world.So now Powell is getting a liberty medal? Not in our name! Let's walk into the future with Mumia -- not the US flunkies of the world! July 4th demo - at 10 am we will meet at Philly City Hall (W. This is an announcement of a demonstration we will be holding here in philadelphia on july 4th, 2002. As you probably all know july 4th is a big deal in philly every year. Since this is where this nation was formed, it's also the center of the country's biggest celebrations of "independence day". Every year, we host an action to highlight the facts that Mumia is still in prison, still on death row, and still should be released. Also, on july 4th secretary of state colin powell is receiving the "liberty award"; which is given annually to: "'an individual or organization from anywhere in the world that has demonstrated leadership and vision in the pursuit of liberty of conscience; or freedom from oppression, ignorance, or deprivation.' The award is administered by Greater Philadelphia First, the regional business and civic leadership group" - qoute taken from a website about the liberty award
Of course we also have many opinions about this award. This particular recipient colin powell is one of the world's most infamous war-mongers and is personally responsible for the wholesale slaughter of perhaps millions of people around the world..

Because of colin powell's presence we will be addressing the war and palestine.
Because of Mumia's own views we will deal with issues of political prisoners, racism, poverty, the environment, social justice, civil rights, human rights, etc.
Due to the fact that many organizers and activists are youth we will deal with youth issues.
In an effort to open this up to as broad a coalition of people as possible we are inviting everyone to participate. Our focus for this day is Mumia, because this is philadelphia, and because right now the government is steadily building their efforts to murder Mumia. But we also want to include all of our allies and supporters.
