ENCIRCLE THE OAKLAND FEDERAL BUILDING TO SAVE THE LIFE OF MUMIA ABU-JAMAL SAT. DEC. 11TH, 1999, 2-4 PM 13th and Clay Streets, downtown Oakland, near 12th St. BART In honor of international human rights day. Mumia's case is now in its final phase of appeal to the federal courts. The federal court is now considering the crucial question of how it will interpret the new federal pro-death penalty law in terms of whether it will hear any evidence, or will simply rubber stamp the Pennsylvania courts' decision which threw out all of the new evidence exonerating Mumia. If the court decides not to hear the truth in Mumia's case, not only will Mumia face near certain death, but it will mark the beginning of a government sanctioned killing frenzy as the nation's hundreds of death row inmates are slaughtered, regardless of constitutional rights. This is THE critical moment at which we must mount a broad movement in the streets to demand justice for Mumia! The Dec. 11 rally is a legal, permitted demonstration sponsored by all Bay Area Mumia organizations. We are also planning a mass nonviolent civil disobedience in San Francisco on February 28, 2000. This is the West Coast action in coordination with mass c.d. at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington. This will occur simultaneous with actions in Philly & Chicago on December 11. In Oakland, we will surround the Federal Bldg. It's huge. Our goal is ten thousand people. This is huge. We need folks to be organized to come in from out of town with folks to put 'em up. We need phone calling & major media work to be happening. We need help. We need finances. But most important, we need folks coming together in a spirit of unity that money can't buy. We also deliver (flyers & posters, that is). UPDATE ON MUMIA’S CASE As many have heard, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the racist rulings of the Pennsylvania state courts by turning down Mumia’s writ of certiorari which was filed this past April 22. Mumia’s lawyers were expecting this to happen. We have learned that Governor Ridge is expected to sign a new death warrant in 30 days. When this happens, Mumia will be put on a death watch and have all "privileges" taken away. All activists should be on an emergency alert just in case this does happen. IF A DEATH WARRANT IS SIGNED BEFORE FRIDAY, WE WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING DAY AT POWELL AND MARKET IN SAN FRANCISCO AT 5 PM.

East Bay Free Mumia Coalition:. In addition to the one tomorrow (Thursday), 10/14/99 at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10/16/99 at 12:00 noon at Powell and Market Streets, there is to be a torchlight march on Tuesday night, 10/19/99  with people assembling at Montgomery and Market Streets (Montgomery BART station) at 6:00 p.m. I hadn't seen this posted anywhere yet, so am sending it along.

San Francisco: 5/13 Action for Mumia Abu-Jamal: On Thursday, May 13, at 4:30 p.m. we will demonstrate at Dianne Feinstein’s office, 525 Market Street, near Montgomery BART. There will be a legal demonstration and a direct action. Sen. Feinstein has a long history of supporting the racist death penalty in California and nationally and it is appropriate for her to use her power as a U.S. official to call for a new and fair trial for Mumia. kali_williams@hotmail.com

Time is running out for Mumia Abu-Jamal. Thanks to President Clinton’s Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, Mumia’s chances in federal court are dismal unless we can turn up the heat with a bigger, broader and stronger movement in the streets. To this end, Bay Area groups are calling for a campaign of direct action over the next several months to let the courts and government know that there will be no peace if Mumia is killed. We are building for large actions in July and September and for an emergency response should a death warrant be issued. We are calling for individuals and organizations to form affinity groups of 5-15 people to participate in the May 13 and future actions.

San Francisco: Sunday May 9, 4 p.m: Pre-action gathering and affinity group formation:  Centro de la Raza, 474 Valencia (between 16th and 15th). For more information, and to get involved: Direct Action for Mumia Abu-Jamal, 415-431-3594. Boulder, CO: An update:  Jello Biafra, political activist/speaker/former lead singer of punk rock group the Dead Kennedys recently spoke on Mumia’s case to an audience of several hundred people at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO on 1/26/99. He eloquently elaborated the facts of the case and incisively attacked the racist, classist death penalty. Furthermore, he pointed out that if Mumia is murdered by the state, it could happen to anyone.

The crowd was mostly youthful, and they were very attentive to his information and enthusiastically applauded his advocacy for Mumia’s freedom.

He also comments on this issue on his most recent spoken word cd. The title is "If Evolution is Outlawed, only Outlaws will Evolve." It is available on his record label Alternative Tentacles Records. He also has put out two cds of Mumia’s recorded commentaries on this label. I recommend seeking all of these out for education of people on the case in general, and youth into the punk scene in particular.

NPR, who recently censored some of Mumia’s commentaries from broadcast on their shows under pressure from the racist government, issued a negative broadcast about the Rage benefit concert on the morning of the concert. Only FOP statesmen and others against the concert and Mumia were interviewed. No Mumia supporters were interviewed. Mumia was referred to as a "convicted cop killer." This further shows how the media is used to manufacture consent for the murder of Mumia by the state. NPR is funded by the government. NPR should be criticized by those in the movement to free mumia by email to their web site, and calls to stations that carry NPR. KEEP HOLDING THE MEDIA ACCOUNTABLE! Scott Cody

Chicago--> Tue, 19 Oct 1999: We had a demo in Chicago on yesterday where at least 300 people came out!! Between 4:30pm & 5:00pm people gather at the Federal Building to listen to a few speakers and at 5:00pm we hit the streets of downtown. We caused many traffic jams as we passed out leaflets, chanted & sang songs of freedom and liberation. I was glad to see the amount of young people as well as Black people who came out. After about an hour of marching the police began to get a little more aggressive with the horses (those horses were strong!!) so that we were only able to stop traffic going West on Adams & Dearborn (Right in front of the Federal Building), as opposed to traffic going North (on Dearborn) and West (on Adams). The crowd ended up dispersing around 6:30PM in front of the Depaul Center. We were supposed to have a meeting in the Depaul Center but the kkkops locked the doors and we were forced to meet outside. 4 People ended up getting arrested and we were able to raise $300-$400 on the spot. As I know it, we didn’t receive any press but we are not giving up and we will continue to organize, educate and agitate until we liberate Mumia and All political prisoners!!!!A Luta Continua, Kamaria ngozi@secapl.com

Indiana, Purdue University: Tuesday, October 19, 1999, at 12:15p.m. This is to inform everyone that the demonstration for Mumia has been scheduled in Memorial Mall. Speakers will be Divine Allah from the BSU who will talk about the life of Mumia in short, Mumia’s trial, and how we can help him in getting a new case and this execution stopped. Other organizational speakers will include a member from Amnesty International and the Leftist Student Network and there may be one or two more speakers. Petitions to be signed will be circulated after the demonstration as well as letters that participants can mail in for themselves. We encourage everyone to come out and rally for this brother’s life. He has been an asset to the black community and the American community at large and we need to take a stand for his human right to life and his American right to a fair trial with a jury of his peers. Look forward to seeing everyone there who can make it. It should be about an hour long. Traverro and the Political Education Committee allah@metalab.unc.edu

Worcester Mass à Mon, 06 Dec 1999 : Everyone needs to support Rage Against the Machine they are doing some amazing things. I was given the opportunity to see them in Worcester Mass. and things were tense. Waiting outside when I arrived there with fellow activists were about 1000 kids waiting to get inside (almost 2 hours before open doors), and 150 cops protesting in a picket line. So I parked my car after chanting "FREE MUMIA" out my car window while driving by and proceeded back to the crowd with my "Stop the Legal Lynching" banner. I got the crowd to start cheering and chanting free Mumia before I, along with other fellow activists, was allowed inside to start preparing for the nights activities. Rage had arranged for around 20 activist to receive all access, guess passes for free to the show so that we could get inside and spread the word. Between my group and refuse and resist we probable handed out more than 10,000 flyers about Mumia. There were also groups there getting the word out about Leonard Peltier and other political prisoners. Then at the end of the night, right before the last song Zach De La Rocha gave a little speech about why we were there and why the Cops were outside. "Those cops outside are saying that we support cop killers. We don't support and kind of killers, especially killer cops!!!" -Zach And just before they started into the last song my fellow activists draped a large "FREE MUMIA" banner from the balcony as the band raised their fists in solidarity. Weymouth à Wednesday, November 10th at 9:00 Am. Police Repression in Weymouth. On November 10th at 9 Am, a group of students and youth will appear in Quincy district court to face a variety of charges including disorderly conduct, trespassing and felony "tagging." These charges are a result in the defendants participation in and promotion of a student walkout and neighborhood march to demand a new trial for political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. Abu-Jaml who was convicted in a sham trial, has spent the past 18 years on PAs death row. His case has become the focus of international attention, especially since new evidence has been recently brought to light about the police and judicial misconduct in the first trial. The only crime these youth have committed is taking a stand on this case. Come to the Quincy Courthouse Call DA Kim Fogarty at 617-471-1650 to demand that the charges be dropped. Boston: Saturday, March 27, 3:30: The Anti-Oppression workshop at the New England Activists Conference.  It runs from 3:30 to 5:00. The last half hour is for questions. Given that Pam has a flight to catch, the first half hour can be shortened in order that questions can be answered or Monica, Kazi and myself can stay back to finish the workshop. It's optional. Harvard: MUMIA ABU-JAMAL: A CASE FOR REASONABLE DOUBT? Harvard Film Archive http://www.harvardfilmarchive.org/ Wednesday, November 25, 8PM (dir. John Edginton, 75 mins.) A stimulating and informative documentary about the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal whose appeal for a new trial was just denied by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, triggering world-wide protest. Convicted in 1982 in the shooting death of a Philadelphia police officer, this film explores the many issues raised regarding his original trial: police-coerced false testimony, inadequate counsel, fabricated "evidence," and more. An award-winning radio journalist and widely read author (Live from Death Row; Death Blossoms), this former founding member of the Black Panther Party in Philadelphia and political prisoner has maintained his innocence for 17 years. Mumia continues to fight for a new and fair trial where he will finally receive a measure of justice. mumia@aol.com   http://www.mumia.org

PS We (along with a bunch of other activist groups from in and around Baltimore and DC) leafletted at the Rage Against the Machine concert in Baltimore this past week. We got out thousands of fliers about Mumia and Rage's support of Mumia. We also spoke with media that night and joined a radio talk show the following Sunday morning concerning the case. Definitely a success in getting the facts out. We also had incidences of police violence against concert goers. Towards the end of the concert police pepper sprayed a group of kids standing outside waiting for their friends because they wouldn't leave. They did this even after the kids explained that they were waiting for the people that they came with and that they couldn't leave without them. The police wouldn't let the kids back into the arena to wash off the pepper spray and taunted them as they sat on the curb in agony. To serve and protect right....?

Baltimore à Community Meeting Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, 7 PM at All Peoples Congress Hall 426 E. 31st St (31st St. & Greenmount Ave.) How Can We Win Justice for Mumia Abu Jamal, Eli McCoy and Larry Hubbard On Dec. 2, the State of Pennsylvania had set the execution of Mumia Abu Jamal, death row political prisoner. A "stay of execution" has been granted in the case of Mumia Abu Jamal. A "stay" means the death warrant is on hold while Mumia's lawyers file the last round of appeals. This is a tremendous victory. One of the many reasons he was targeted for a frame up was his work against police brutality and killings. Find out how you can stop this execution. Find out what his case is about. And discuss the growing epidemic of police killings right here in Baltimore. Why are youth being targeted? Why is racism growing? How is this connected to the fight for a better life for all working and poor people? All Peoples Congress, 426 E. 31st St, Baltimore, Md. 21218 email: apcbaltimore@pipeline.com   Call (410) 235-7040

Baltimore-->WEDNESDAY, OCT. 13, 5:30 PM: Stop Police Killings/ Justice for Larry Hubbard! emergency protest JOIN US FOR A CITY WIDE PROTEST TO DEMAND JUSTICE AND AN END TO POLICE KILLINGS  IN FRONT OF THE DOWNTOWN PRATT LIBRARY, CATHEDRAL & FRANKLIN STS.

In just this past year there have been 15 police shootings and the number in the last couple of months has skyrocketed. We must demand an independent community investigation into police violence. Larry Hubbard is the most recent victim. While the police tell one story, countless eyewitnesses in the community tell a story of blatant execution. "The victim plead for his life" while police in a fit of anger shot Hubbard in the back of the head. Larry Hubbard could have been your brother, son, father or loved one. Larry Hubbard could have been you! There will be a Mayoral candidates forum at the library that evening. Place the candidates on notice that Baltimore City will not tolerate police killings. Martin O’Malley ran on a platform of "zero tolerance" pledging to make this City like New York City. "Zero tolerance" is a code name for increased police abuse. The policy of "zero tolerance" led to the gunning down of Amadou Diallo and the torture of Abner Louima. Sponsored by: Unity for Action; All Peoples Congress; Concerned Citizens for Police Accountability and Review; Local Organizing Committee of the Million Man March; UHURU Movement and many others.
