SATURDAY MAY 13 10:30 - assemble at Justin Herman Plaza (Market & Embarcadero) As you may know, this is a critical time in the struggle to stop the execution of fellow union member Mumia Abu-Jamal and win a new trial. This Saturday, May 13, in San Francisco, there will be a massive Western Regional mobilization demanding justice and a new trial for Abu-Jamal. Local 3 has worked hard over the past year to bring attention to this important case, and we are organizing a writers contingent for this Saturday's march. Please join us and demonstrate your opposition to the censorship--by execution! Abu-Jamal's writing played a central role in his arrest, conviction, and sentencing 18 years ago, and today his prolific writing continues to inflame those demanding his execution. As Abu-Jamal puts it, "They don't just want my death, they want my silence." The march assembles at 10:30 am at Justin Herman Plaza (Market and Embarcadero), San Francisco. Look for the writers contingent by the National Writers Union banner near the fountain. The march will end with a rally featuring Dick Gregory, Dolores Huerta, Tom Amiano, Michael Franti, and others, at 1:00 pm at Civic Center. For background information, check the May issue of Hearsay and the Local 3 web site at http://www.igc.org/nwusf/Mumia.html Hope to see you Saturday. Al Weinrub, Chairperson Local 3

Mumia Movement Grows In Chicago March and Rally July 8th 2000 Was a Success Congratulations to everyone in the CCFMAJ who marched on the South Side, July 8th. We marched with the African American Committee to Free Mumia Abu Jamal and Aaron Patterson. We helped make it a success by turning out a dozen people. We marched 2 miles and we were visible to thousands of people. It was successful for several reasons. There was dedication and commitment in the planning of the march and rally. About 3,000 leaflets were passed out in the south side and a 700 address mailing was sent by the CCFMAJ. WVON radio gave 2 hours one evening to the African American Committee. The Defender printed a lead article in its Wednesday issue, July 5th, announcing the rally.... Fraternally Yours, Dave Vance

Bostonà12/8 Stand with Anti-Death Penalty / Free Mumia! Activists in Boston Municipal Court! All Out! Anti-Death Penalty / Free Mumia! Activists Stand Trial In Boston Friday, Dec. 8. On Sept. 13, 2000, anti-death penalty activists staged a legal picket and disruption of Al Gore's $1,000/plate fundraiser at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. While the disruption inside halted Gore's speech with demands to "Free Mumia Abu-Jamal" and "Stop the Racist Executions" and went off without a hitch, outside the Boston Police Intelligence Unit arrested two peaceful picketers in an unconstitutional act of preventative detention. The two were charged with "trespassing" on a public sidewalk, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer. Come stand in solidarity in court with those falsely arrested and with the struggle to win a New Trial and Freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal. Kalamazoo à 23 Feb 2000 Report from Western Michigan University, (WMU) The March and Rally went splendidly today. The weather was perfect. It started at WMU with an address from Dr. Ron Kramer, the chair of the Criminal Justice Dept. of WMU. That was covered by our local ABC TV affilliate. Our picture was taken by the Kalamazoo Gazette and when we got to the Federal Building we were met by the local CBS TV affilliate and our local NPR radio reporters. These media outlets reach all of Southwest Michigan. The students did an excellent job getting the word out. We had about 40 people march so it looked good and Commissioner Cooney spoke and was interviewed by both CBS and NPR so we will likely get into the evening news. As far as i know this was the first well attended event for Mumia in Kalamazoo. john speier acclaimvideo@igc.org

MINNEAPOLIS, MN: TEACH-IN-->Saturday, January 5th 3:00 p.m.: GET THE 411 ON THE LATEST RULING IN MUMIA'S CASE! Mumia Abu-Jamal is a political prisoner on death row, framed up and railroaded for a murder he did not commit. A major new ruling just came down in Mumia's case--overturning his death sentence. Federal Judge William Yohn issued the first ruling EVER to call into question any part of Mumia's case. Still, the ruling fails to consider scores of new evidence, witnesses and constitutional issues and upholds Mumia's first-degree murder conviction. What does it all mean? How can we seize this moment and use this partial victory to win justice for Mumia? We get a short lead time on dates and times of events, so knowing who is available when is necessary for us to be as effective as possible. The goal is to focus press attention on Leonard Peltier during the first in the nation primary season. We especially need drummers, trucks of any size, and free Leonard Peltier banners. Help with gas is available...as well as food and housing. Let us know your needs. Thanks. Bonnie Winona Shelley Nelkens...no answering machine, keep trying! ALBUQUERQUE à February 24, 2000 About 150 demonstrators gathered on the University of New Mexico campus today to protest the imprisonment of death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal. Several anarchists were among the protestors. Some people gave speeches over a loudspeaker as the demonstators chanted "Brick by brick, wall by wall, we're going to free Mumia Abu-Jamal" and "No justice, no peace." As darkness fell, some of the demonstrators began to move into the street and block traffic. Traffic was almost fully blocked in one direction for about twenty minutes as protestors chanted. Several irate motorists threatened to run down a few of the protestors with their cars while others sat there calmly waiting for the police to arrive. Traffic had backed up about a half mile before the police arrived and the protestors left the street. There were no arrests. About a half hour after the police arrived, the media came and interviewed the police. After the interview, the police left the protest and several of the protestors were then interviewed Activist News Network (http://activistnews.plebius.org )

New York City-->Wednesday, July 25th, 2001 at 7pm: Arnold Beverly gave a sworn statement that he shot and killed police officer Daniel Faulkner, the crime that Mumia Abu-Jamal was falsly convicted of and sitting on death row for. We have been trying to get a court to allow him to testify so that all sides can investigate this claim, but meeting with opposition from the politicians and police, who are determined to have Mumia on death row....
On July 19, 2001, Judge William Yohn has refused the deposition of Arnold Beverly! In extremely harsh tones, Judge Yohn cited the AEDPA (Anti Effective Death Penalty Act) and the expiration of the statute of limitations to conclude that Mumia does not have a right to a deposition of Arnold Beverly's confession.

Monday, Jan 29, 2001-->Rally in Support of the Peltier 4 in NYC!
New York City-->SUNDAY DECEMBER 10, 2000: COUNTDOWN TO CLEMENCY, WALK FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION --Indigenous Rights Activist, Leonard Peltier, is currently facing what may be his only chance for freedom for years to come. Leonard Peltier has been unjustly imprisoned for over 24 years. Amnesty International considers him to be a political prisoner who should be immediately and unconditionally released. Despite the fact that formerly withheld evidence forced the US prosecutor to admit that he could not prove who was actually guilty of the crime he was convicted of, Leonard Peltier's court appeals are exhausted and his chances for parole are very slim. His only remaining avenue for release lies in the hands of President Clinton through a grant of Executive clemency. Time is running out! Housing/Transportation/Parking For NYC Peltier Walk
As part of our emergency effort to gain Leonard Peltier's long overdue freedom, we are organizing a major event in New York City on Sunday, December 10, which is Human Rights Day. This will be a time for us to send a positive and united message of support for Leonard Peltier's freedom, as a gesture of truth and reconciliation for all Indigenous Peoples.
We will gather in Union Square at 12:00 noon and we will walk to the United Nations (Dag Hammarskjold Plaza) where a candlelight vigil and program of speakers, cultural activities, and traditional music will be presented from 2pm-4pm. The walk will be led by members of the Pine Ridge Lakota Nation and members of Leonard Peltier's family. Come show your solidarity by representing your Native Nation, church, organization, union, or just yourself. The event will be peaceful. No alcohol or drugs. For updates contact the New York City Hotline: 212-539-6027. To find out how you can help make this a successful event, contact the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee: 785-842-5774. Thank you. Hermon Darden, Metropolitan Community Methodist Church, The Association of Legal Aid Attorneys/UAW Local 2325 In Illinois, when issues of innocence, lack of adequate legal defense, police and prosecutorial misconduct came into the open, public outcry caused pro-death penalty Governor Ryan to call a moratorium on executions. We know that these issues are not unique to Illinois. Nationally 87 innocent people have been released after spending an average of 7 years each on death row. As a result support for the death penalty has dropped to its lowest point in 20 years. Just last week, Buffalo and Rochester, NY, passed resolutions in favor of a moratorium. This town hall meeting is intended to heighten awareness and mobilize more people in the struggle to win a moratorium on all executions nationally. For more information, call 212-330-7056

July 24, 2001--On this Thursday, July 26th there will be an emergency meeting at 4601 market street at 6 pm because Judge Yohn has denied taking a deposition from Arnold Beverly (the man who has confessed to killing officer Faulkner).
Judge Yohn has shown that he is just as corrupt as Sabo and doesn't give a damn about who really killed Faulkner, if he did than he would encourage a deposition from a man who has confessed. Former head of the U.S. department of Amnesty International, Sam Jordan will be present to explain the current legal situation. Also, Mumia has a hearing in the state court on Aug. 17th (Marcus Garvey's birthday and the anniversary of Mumia's first execution date) at the "justice center" in Philadelphia. We are mobilizing for major demonstrations on the 17th and 18th on the east side of city hall(across from the "justice center". This meeting is very important! Please spread the word. THURSDAY, 6PM, 4601 MARKET ST
On this Tues. (tomorrow), July 24, we will be doing another demo in front of Lynn Abraham's office from 4-6 pm. The last two demos have been very successful and we must keep the pressure on. As of now we are stopping to demos on Monday at Broad and Spring Garden and focusing more energy on pressuring these corrupt officials to do what is right.
We will alternate back and forth between the DA's office and Mayor Street's office every Tues.
Also, please continue to write and call her office to pressure her to take action on the Arnold Beverly confession. Lynne Abraham 1421 Arch St. Philadelphia, PA 19107 (215) 686-8700

Philadelphia-->Tuesday (March 7, 2000) through Thursday: Protest New Attack on MOVE: This is to inform supporters of justice for Mumia Abu-Jamal of a new attack on the MOVE family that comes, not by accident, at this crucial time in Mumia's case. After years of absence and neglect, the father of Alberta Africa's son is now suing for custody of him. This is a very serious matter because it could provide a pretext for another police attack on MOVE as happened in the 1978 and 1985. This is NOT personal matter. It represents stepped up harassment by the government against MOVE. There will be a court hearing on this matter this week, Tuesday (March 7, 2000) through Thursday, with the first and last day being most important. Supporters should gather at 8:30 am outside the court at 34 South 11th Street (hearing is in Room 264) International Concerned Family & Friends of Mumia: 215-476-8812.

Providence, RI--> june 24th, 1:00pm - 5:00pm : ! A L L R I S E ! as artists, activists, community for d e a d p r e z with Busted Fro, Critical Mass w/ Martin, and Local Artists, Activists, Dancers and Poets at CCRI-Providence, RI Campus, 1 Hilton Street june 24th, 2000 $5 at the door Join the Providence Southside for a real discussion of police brutality, the |prison| system, and the failure of our school system with the country's hottest new revolutionary hip-hop group, dead prez.
This event is titled !All Rise! because we believe that it is absolutely crucial to begin to organize, or rise up, as a community against oppressive social and economic institutions. These inequalities are largely ignored by an educational system that denies the history and resistance of people of color, and a corporate-controlled media that promotes the views of a profit motivated, racist, prison system, that, in turn, supports the efforts of a police force with no intentions of community accountability and no relationships with the residents that they allegedly "serve and protect." We are here to say that these institutions do not work for us, the hard-working people of Providence, RI, and of the world, who receive the poorest treatment, the least social benefits, and the least respect as human beings. We say no to a government that celebrates the victory of the rich, the white, the male and the military and confines those of us who stand in the way. We are here to say that we need to organize ourselves; to begin to create grassroots and community-driven movements for social change. The artists that will perform at this event are all dedicated to this idea: that we can and must come together as a community in order to bring about change. Let's Get Free!
The event will include tabling and organizing for Mumia's Day in Court as well as the July / August Republican Convention in Philly -- the next step after the Battle of Seattle and A16. sponsored by DARE - Direct Action for Rights and Equality, National People's Campaign, The Uprising for more info call 401-621-9188 http://www.deadprez.com or National Peoples Campaign Boston, 617-522-6626 npcboston@yahoo.com http://home.earthlink.net/~npcboston

Houston-->This is to let you know that Texas is sending rep's for the dec. 8, 2001 demo. solidarity, chickpea Texas Road Trip to Philadelphia for Mumia Mobilization Mumia Abu-Jamal is the only political prisoner on death row in the USA. A December 8 demonstration will mark the twentieth year since his arrest for the murder of Philadelphia police officer, Daniel Faulkner. The worldwide movement to free Mumia will be in full effect on this day. Please help us to show Texas' solidarity by attending the demonstration or making a contribution towards our trip. Background: Late in the afternoon on Wednesday, the day before a four-day weekend, state appeals court Judge Dembe denied Mumia's request to re-open his Post Conviction Relief Act hearings. Her careful timing to prevent mass mobilization will not be succesful, however, and plans are already being made around the country for people to attend a huge demonstration in Philly on December 8. On December 7 there will be a press conference with Angela Davis and a delegation from France. December 9th will mark 20 years since Mumia's capture and later conviction by a kangaroo court on July 3, 1982. Trip info: Members of the American Indian Movement and Houstonians United for Mumia are organizing to show our support for Mumia and all political prisoners. There will be a van leaving from Houston, TX on December 6 to attend the rally and related events described above. We will return on December 12 (or earlier if need be). Anyone in Texas who opposes railroading of Mumia for his political beliefs is invited. The cost per person for van rental and gas (round trip) is estimated to be $90. If you are interested, please contact t_ahtone@hotmail.com. If you are unable to go, but would like to support the trip, please consider making a donation that will go towards paying for van rental and gas. It costs only $45 to pay for half of one person's trip. Please contact chickpea_@hotmail.com.

Lubbock, Texas--> THE MARCH FOURTH FAST: DEAR COMRADES, My name is Ryan Nathaniel Goldston. I live in the city of Lubbock, Texas, and I am currently in the ninth grade. I have done many things in my community to raise Mumia awareness. I have passed out flyers, protested with two friends at the courthouse and have always gotten great responses from African- American and Hispanic people living in the community. I have had less success with the White people of the community, but there are many out their who gave me great encouragement. However, I have not gotten the publicity that I wanted in these events. I am not hungry for attention for myself, I am hungry for attention for Mumia Abu Jamal. People have to know. So now, as Amnesty International calls for a retrial, I thought that I would take direct action myself. I was very inspired by Andrew Bushard's letter, and also by the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Caesar Chavez, and Bobby Sands, to hold a hunger strike for Mumia Abu Jamal. I will fast until either Mumia's death sentence is overturned, or his freedom is instilled. For two weeks I will partake of nothing but water. Following that I will use a technique that our Muslim brothers use during the fast of Ramadan. I will have no food or water from dawn to dusk. After sunset I will eat the necessary amount of food. I would like to invite all who believe in Mumia's case to join me. The time for action is now! One Love! palmermd@arn.net
Houston à Sun, 23 Jan 2000 Activists in Houston held a rally march for Mumia and Shaka Sankofa this weekend which I attended with the Chairman of the National Black United Front, Kofi Taharka. Bro. Kofi gave a rousing speech calling on the release of all political prisoners including Mumia, Sundiata Acoli, and Leonard Peltier among others. He received loud cheers from the African participation in the event by stating that "white supremacy", not just racism , is the root cause for 70% of prisoners in the state of Texas being African or Hispanic. There was a wide variation of different groups there including the Nation of Islam and Minister Robert Muhammad who also was on point with his observations. Minister Muhammad and the NOI have now begun to again actively challenge the death penalty here in Texas and will participate or lead events at least once a month around it and the criminal justice system. This summer Kofi Taharka and the Houston Chapter of the National Black United Front , declared a "State of Emergency" in the entire justice system in Texas, and and has been challenging the Texas Department of Criminal Justice around issues of death, failure to provide proper medical treatment ,etc. The National Black United Front - Houston Chapter led by Bro. Kofi has attended two meetings with Mr. Wayne Scott - Executive Director of TDCJ and other TDCJ officials, the first without their knowledge that he would be attending forcing them to answer question they have refused to answer and placing them in a very awkward position of not being able to "snow" families seeking answers. . The National Black United Front - Houston Chapter and it's Maat Justice Committee meet every Monday- at 7:00 P.M. at 2428 Southmore. Michael Haggerty exodusn@idt.net
