Upcoming Events To Save Mumia
Dear Friend,
The year 2000 will be decisive in the political and legal struggle to win a new trial and save the life of Mumia Abu-Jamal. We are urgently seeking your support and participation. Now is the time to act! In the coming months there will be several very important activities in which you can participate:
On Monday, February 28, there will be mass civil disobedience and legal protests at the Supreme Court in Washington, DC, and here in San Francisco at the Federal Court of Appeals, 7th & Mission Sts. You can join either the CD action or the support demonstration.
In April, the legal defense team expects to be in federal district court in Philadelphia before Judge William Yohn to argue that Mumia be granted a new trial. This is universally considered to be Mumia's best remaining opportunity within the legal system. Activities will be organized when we know the exact dates of this hearing.
On May 13, there will be a western regional march and rally for Mumia in San Francisco, initiated by the Mobilization to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal. The National People's Campaign and many other organizations will be mobilizing for this demonstration.
In late July and early August, the Republican and Democratic national conventions will be taking place in Philadelphia (end of July) and Los Angeles (Aug. 13-17). The NPC together with others is planning for major demonstrations at both conventions calling for a new trial for Mumia and opposing the death penalty. The Republicans are meeting in Mumia's hometown, and undoubtedly Gov. Thomas Ridge, who is energetically trying to both execute Mumia and win the vice-presidential nomination, will be playing a major role. In Los Angeles, Edward Rendell, former Philadelphia mayor and district attorney and now chairman of the Democratic National Committee, will be presiding. He too is an avid proponent of Mumia's execution. All of the leading Democrat and Republican candidates are for the death penalty.
Mumias fate lies in the hands of the people as much as it lies in the hands of any judge. A broad mass movement to stop his execution can force the judicial system to act. The injustice of Mumia's first trial is not an isolated case. Recently, the governor of Illinois, George Ryan, announced a moratorium on the death penalty in that state, after media reports revealed that, "Capital punishment is a system so riddled with faulty evidence, unscrupulous trial tactics and legal incompetence that justice has been forsaken." Now, the Clinton administration is reported to be considering a similar moratorium on federal executions.
We must act now to prevent the execution of Mumia. If Mumia were to be executed, it would be a tragedy not only for one man and his family, but constitute a great danger to the rights of more than 3,500 people on death row in the U.S. Now is the time to fight back, while there is still time to act.
There are several ways you can participate in and support the campaign to save Mumia: Join in the Feb. 28 protest. If you are interested in joining the NPC's group, which will be committing civil disobedience, call us at 415-821-6545.
Become an activist if you are not already. Organize a teach-in for your school, union, church or community group. Or, get involved in the organizing of the upcoming demonstrations. Call us to volunteer!
Make a contribution to the organizing work. We know that many of you have donated in the past and those contributions have be vital to our activities. Now we are at a most critical juncture. Contributions can be made to National People's Campaign/Mumia.
Yours for justice,
