April 24th, 2003 March & Rally to Demand Mumia's Immediate Release! 11 A.M. Philadelphia City Hall 15th & Market Streets DEATH ROW? SHUT IT DOWN!
WHAT'S THE WORD? Harrisburg!
Just as the people of South Africa struggled against the racist apartheid system in their country, we in the United States have been waging a war against institutionalized and systemic racism for several centuries now. Although there have been some victories, racism is endemic in the United States, a white settler state just like South Africa. Mumia's case is but one example of this institutionalized racism. Despite the growing evidence proving his innocence, Mumia is still on death row, still in danger of execution for a crime he did not commit. A world-renowned journalist and tireless fighter for freedom for his people and all people, Mumia is on death row precisely because he is a Black man who dares to speak truth to power. As the South African struggle proved, only the people have the power to deliver an enduring blow against the racist state by freeing Mumia and all political prisoners.
Since Governor Ryan of Illinois recently set a precedent by releasing four people from death row in that state and commuting all other death sentences to life in prison, International Concerned Family & Friends of Mumia is organizing a march and rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the anniversary of the Effective Death Penalty Act to demand that Gov. Rendell free Mumia and shut down Death Row in Pennsylvania. In Mumia's words, Governor Ryan "sent shock waves across the nation when he issued four pardons to men sitting on the Condemned Units of the state's prison system, opening the doors of the dungeon for four men, one of whom sat in the shadow of the gallows for nearly two decades. Speaking in a soft, Midwestern accent, his words were as damning as the death sentences that his orders negated: 'The system is broken.' . . . Hours after his unprecedented announcement of the pardon package, Ryan's office would announce another earth-shattering event: the full commutation of every man on Death Row in the Prairie State. By the end of the week, 167 folks would no longer be on Death Row. . . . the one-term governor struck a mighty blow against the Death System in America." The Coalition will be organizing buses to this important rally.
