International Demonstrations for Restoration of Constitution and Judges

The world is facing one of the most severe economic crises affecting the common man, due to the imperial and reckless policies of Bush and his allies. These same policies have led to one of the darkest days of Pakistan’s history, November 3, 2007, when the worst dictator of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency in Pakistan, suspended the constitution for the second time and arrested Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Iftikhar Chaudhry and his sixty fellow judges of the Pakistani Superior Courts, forcing the country from civilized society to the dark ages. Before, on March 9, 2007, he was blackmailed and threatened by Musharraf and his chief spy agencies. Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry was punished for opposing the sale of Pakistan’s valuable assets (Pakistan Steel mill, etc.) to other countries, questioning the dictatorship’s involvement in missing people and shipping them to United States without legal process and challenging unconstitutional laws created by the dictator to protect himself and some Western powers.

The November 3rd declaration was not an emergency but a martial law, a reincarnation of October 12, 1999, because Gen. Pervez Musharraf imposed it as Chief of Staff of the Amy, not as a civilian President, as he had done before. There were demonstrations across the country by civil society and the political parties, but the actual movement came from the Pakistani lawyers and judges spread across the country and the world, from Lahore to Karachi, from Islamabad to North America, Europe and the Middle East. Mr. Musharraf was condemned by the entire world. The downfall of the Musharraf government and finally his resignation were the result of this movement. We congratulate these heroes.

Benazir Bhutto’s death was a serious setback to the movement for democracy in Pakistan. The worst outcome of this catastrophe was the ascendency of Mr. Asif Zardari to the Presidency, a product of the disgraced National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), specially created by General Musharraf to forgive the most corrupt leader of Pakistan who looted and plundered the national resources and became one of the richest individuals of one of the poorest nation of the world. His assets were released by Pakistan, US and European countries even though plenty of evidence existed regarding this ill-gotten wealth. Despite Mr. Zardari’s promise in writing and before the media to re-instate Chief Justice Chaudhry and other Judges, he did not fulfil his promise. Contrary to the mandate of PPP he has not provided basic needs like food, electricity, gas, etc., to the people of Pakistan. We must hold him accountable.

Dear friends, let us rejuvenate our movement in North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, the Middle East and other parts of the world for the restoration of Justice Chaudhry and other Judges. We ask our friends to hold rallies in front of the Pakistani Consulates or Embassies in Washington, DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Paris, Canberra, Johannesburg and other cities to protest against this injustice. We appeal to all Pakistani Americans, members of the civil society, US and International Human Rights organizations to come and join us for this noble cause. We shall contact our friends, relatives and members of all communities in other parts of the world to gather in front of the Pakistani Consulates in their respective countries to join us in this protest. Also, we must not forget Dr. Aafia, the missing people in Pakistan, the innocent detainees in Guantanamo Bay and other political prisoners, and the illegal wars. We must also put pressure on the US to stop air strikes on Pakistani territory.

In New York City, on Monday, Nov 3rd, 2008, between 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, let us gather in front of the Pakistani Consulate at 65th Street and 5th Avenue.
