STATEMENT
Human Rights activists from NYC want to express their
solidarity with the Asociacion Pro Derechos Humanos (APRODEH), Pro Human
Rights Association, and its directors Francisco Soberon and Miguel Lugo who are
being harassed by Peruvian officials. We also salute the courage of APRODEH in
rejecting the Peruvian government’s use of the fear of terrorism as an
excuse to persecute political opposition. We reject the Peruvian
government’s attempt to link the defense of human rights to
terrorism.
APRODEH is known worldwide for its defense of victims of
terrorism and due to its role, it has made possible the extradition of former
dictator Alberto Fujimori back to Peru.
We condemn any threats to APRODEH and its staff and call
for an end to these intimidation tactics so that our fellow human rights
advocates in Peru can continue their important work without any
persecution.
Cordially,
Human Rights Project
