Bloomberg, Mayor of Wall Street

Why is Bloomberg, the 8th richest man in the U.S., spending $100 million to buy this election? Yes he’s arrogant and enjoys controlling the lives of 9 million people in NYC. There are bigger reasons though. The budget of NYC is $59 billion a year. 20% of that goes to debt service, or $12 billion a year, tax-free. This windfall, every year, goes to the banks and investment companies.

The same banks that got trillions of dollars in the federal bailout.

Then there’s “Authorities” like the MTA. These unelected big business representatives have their own budgets and there are hundreds of them in the state. The Authorities also give billions in tax free debt service payments to banks. The NYC Budget is also a cash cow for companies of all kinds who profit from contracts with the City. He wants to privatize more public services so his buddies can profit.

Bloomberg, represents Wall Street, not the working class and youth, and wants to make sure these billions keep flowing into the bank vaults. Meanwhile every necessary service is starved and cut-back.

Racism, Union Busting, War on Working Class communities

Bloomberg has been campaigning with the racist, anti-union, anti-youth, anti-immigrant Giuliani, spreading fear and hate in his desperation to keep his grip on NYC. He lies about jobs while unemployment soars. Bloomberg did nothing to stop the Stella D’oro plant from moving, despite NYC tax money the company received. He called transit workers thugs and is against their raise. He’s attacking city workers, wanting to force them into poverty. He’s for 100 projects for the giant real estate developers, arranging for them to get billions in city and state tax payer funds. The real thugs, the biggest criminals are Bloomberg and the bankers.

We Need a United City-Wide Movement and Struggle.

Every day in NYC there are demonstrations by unions and community groups. Each of us fighting separately one by one. Our enemy is united, and we must unite into a great people’s fight back, that says People Before Profit. Even the biggest unions or groups cannot take on Wall Street alone. We must put aside our differences or each day we will all lost more ground.

No matter Who Wins the Election We Still Have to Fight.

Time and again we celebrate the defeat of a hated official like Bloomberg, only to be left with the same policies continued. Why? Because the entire city government is run as a capitalist profit making corporation. Debt service billions will still be paid and politicians will cry about no money. We hope Bloomberg is defeated. But whether he wins or Thompson wins, it is only the mass united struggle that can challenge and win the needs of the people.
