Exchange on a fact-finding mission to investigate human rights violations in
Colombia and attend the Tribunal!
In the last 20 years, more than 4,000 unionists have been killed in
Colombia. Four million people have been displaced from their homes due to a
U.S.-backed war against the civilian population and the social movement.
Progressive people, including journalists, human rights activists, community
leaders and student organizers, have been killed, threatened or attacked for
mobilizing against economic and political repression.
These attacks are carried out by forces trained, funded and endorsed by the
U.S. government. It is part of a war that has dangerous ramifications against
the other countries in the region.

and by demanding that the U.S. government and corporations stop supporting
state terror by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe's regime.

The Colombian labor union SINALTRAINAL, which represents Coca-Cola workers,
together with other progressive organizations invites the international
community to participate in a Permanent Peoples' Tribunal in Bogotá,
Colombia on July 21-23, and to be part of a labor delegation which will visit
hospitals, schools and worker centers, and meet with social organizations from
July 19 to July 27.
The International Action Center is working with the U.S.-Cuba Labor Exchange to
take a delegation of labor, anti-war and other progressive activists on a
fact-finding mission that includes participation in the Tribunal. The
delegation will meet with labor and other social activists who are leading the
struggle in Colombia for political, economic and social justice and equality.
The trip will help participants understand how U.S. policies abroad affect
workers in Colombia and in the U.S.
The fact-finding delegation will bring back the truth to activists in the U.S.
about the U.S. role in Colombian repression against students, unionists, human
rights activists and other progressives. This will help to build the solidarity
movement with the Colombian people.
Background of Peoples' Tribunal: The Permanent
Peoples' Tribunal is an international independent tribunal that examines
and judges complaints regarding violations of human rights that have been
submitted by the victims. The Tribunal was founded in June 1979 in Italy by
legal experts, writers and other intellectuals. It followed the Bertrand
Russell International War Crimes Tribunal, which held two sessions in 1967 to
expose war crimes committed against the Vietnamese people.
The upcoming Tribunal session in Bogotá, entitled "Transnational
corporations and crimes against humanity," will be the last held there
after four prior hearings on (1) how foreign-owned agribusinesses have affected
farmers and Indigenous peoples; (2) the mining companies' role; (3) the
impact of transnational corporate-controlled development on biodiversity and
the environment and (4) oil companies and human rights violations.
The Tribunal is an extremely important event that will help expose the
dangerous, and escalating U.S. corporate-backed state repression against
people's movements.
It will also reinvigorate the many peoples' movements and progressive
forces with the solidarity that international delegations bring.
Edgar Paez from SINALTRAINAL says of the Tribunal's purpose: "Through
this process we will increase the exposure of the relations between
paramilitarism, transnational corporations and the policy of impunity and
terror of the Colombian state. Its main purpose is the search for truth,
justice and complete reparations. Several transnational corporations have been
accused at the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal--Colombia Session, regarding
their responsibility for the murder of union leaders for the violation of union
freedom and the right of association."

Apoia o Tribunal e a missão de investigação sobre
violações aos direitos humanos na Colômbia!
A crise dos direitos humanos na Colômbia é terrível!
Nas duas últimas semanas, dois sindicalistas e o filho de 10 anos de idade
de um deles foram mortos.De acordo com alguns
sindicalistas, mais de 4,000 filiados foram mortos na Colômbia nos
últimos 20 anos. Quatro milhões de pessoas foram deslocadas de suas
casas devido à guerra apoiada pelos EUA contra a população civil
e o movimento social.
Pessoas progressistas, incluindo jornalistas, activistas de direitos humanos,
líderes de comunidades e activistas estudantis foram mortos,
ameaçados ou atacados por fazerem acções de
mobilização contra a repressão económica e
política.
Apesar dos acontecimentos recentes na Colômbia, que mobilizaram uma boa
parte da atenção dos media, a verdade é que a
repressão política pelo regime de Uribe continua no dia a dia contra
os que se lhe opõem. Isto não é divulgado pelos órgãos
de comunicação. Isto tem de ser divulgado por todos os que
lutam pelos direitos humanos e pela justiça!
Os ataques são levados a cabo por forças treinadas, financiadas e
sancionadas pelo governo dos EUA. Isto faz parte de uma guerra que tem
perigosas ramificações contra os outros países da
região.
O sindicato colombiano SINALTRAINAL, que representa os trabalhadores da
Coca-Cola, e outras organizações progressistas, estão a acolher
o Tribunal Popular Permanente de Bogotá, Colômbia, de 21 a 23 de
Julho, e uma delegação internacional de trabalhadores que
visitará hospitais, escolas e centros operários, e se avistará
com organizações sociais.
O International Action Center está a trabalhar com o EUA-Cuba Labor
Exchange para receber uma delegação de trabalhadores, activistas
anti-guerra e outros activistas de organizações progressistas, a qual
irá participar numa missão de investigação que irá
também participar no Tribunal. A delegação vai encontrar-se com
activistas de organizações de trabalhadores e activistas sociais que
lideram a luta pela justiça e igualdade política, económica e
social. A visita ajudará os participantes a compreender de que modo as
políticas dos EUA no estrangeiro afectam os trabalhadores na Colômbia
e nos EUA.
A missão de investigação trará à luz do dia, para os
activistas nos EUA, a verdade sobre o papel dos EUA na repressão contra
estudantes, sindicalistas, activistas dos direitos humanos e outros
progressistas Colombianos e ajudará a fortalecer o movimento de
solidariedade com o povo da Colômbia.
Sobre o Tribunal Popular: O Tribunal Popular Permanente é
um tribunal internacional independente que examina e julga
reclamações de violações dos direitos humanos submetidas
pelas vítimas. O Tribunal foi fundado em 1979 em Itália por
especialistas de direito, escritores e outros intelectuais. Ele sucede ao
Tribunal Internacional Bertrand Russel para Crimes de Guerra que teve duas
sessões em 1967 para denunciar os crimes de guerra cometidos contra o povo
do Vietname.
A próxima sessão do Tribunal em Bogotá, intitulada
"Corporações internacionais e crimes contra a humanidade",
terá lugar após quatro audições prévias: (1) como o
agro-business estrangeiro afectou os agricultores e os povos indígenas;
(2) o papel das companhias mineiras; (3) o impacto do desenvolvimento
controlado pelas corporações internacionais na biodiversidade e no
ambiente e (4) companhias petrolíferas e violação de direitos
humanos.
A sessão do Tribunal é um acontecimento extremamente importante que
ajudará a denunciar a perigosa e crescente repressão de estado contra
os movimentos populares apoiada pelas corporações dos EUA. Ela
trará novo vigor aos muitos movimentos populares e forças
progressistas, com a solidariedade normalmente trazida pelas
delegações internacionais.
Edgar Paez, da SINALTRAINAL, diz, sobre os objectivos do Tribunal:
"Através deste processo, iremos aumentar a denúncia das
relações entre os para-militares, as corporações
transnacionais e a política de impunidade e terror do estado Colombiano. O
seu principal objectivo é a busca da verdade, justiça e completa
indemnização. Várias corporações transnacionais
têm sido acusadas no Tribunal Popular Permanente – Sessão da
Colômbia, em relação às suas responsabilidades no
assassínio de dirigentes sindicalistas, pela violação da
liberdade sindical e do direito de associação".
Esta é a situação! Ela necessita da atenção e
ajuda de pessoas progressistas ao longo dos EUA!
