SUPPORTERS OF SANCTIONS CHALLENGE ON ALERT - DELEGATION DEPARTS FROM NEW YORK, FRIDAY, JAN. 14

The third Iraq Sanctions Challenge will leave New York bound for Iraq on Friday, Jan. 14, 2000. An international delegation of 60 people will bring more than $2 million worth of anti-tuberculosis medications, antibiotics and other medical supplies in a gesture of solidarity with the Iraqi people, who have suffered from nearly a decade of U.S./UN sanctions/blockade. More than a million Iraqis have died as a result of the sanctions and millions more are suffering from sanctions-caused disease and malnutrition.

The Iraq Sanctions Challenge is openly defying the so-called "Trading With the Enemy" act to develop critically needed medicines. Delegates face possible 12 year prison sentences and million dollar fines for this action.

We are calling on all supporters of the Sanctions Challenge to be on alert in the coming week, in case the U.S. government attempts to block or interfere with the delegation.

If the delegation is stopped be ready to call:
President Bill Clinton 202-456-1111 Fax:202-456-2461
Department of Treasury: 202-622-2008 Fax: 622-2599
Secretary of State: Madeline Albright: 202-647-5298 fax: 202-647- 1533

Make plans for report-backs meetings featuring delegates who have just returned. The delegation is due back in the U.S. on January 21, 2000.
