Help us mobilize NOW to Stop War on Iran!

We are writing because of the new and immediate danger of a U.S. attack on Iran, either directly by the Pentagon or through Israel.

In the next few weeks and months, we need your help to organize and
mobilize a grassroots movement in opposition to another illegal U.S.
war predicated on lies about "weapons of mass destruction."

The real threat of such an attack was made clear last week, when
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, addressing a convention of the
American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Washington DC,
said that Iran's nuclear program must be stopped by "all possible
means." Democrats and Republicans seemed united as they lined up to
express unequivocal support for this position, presenting Iran's
totally legal development of nuclear energy as a dire threat to
"world peace."

This well-coordinated threat escalated after Olmert returned to
Israel from his U.S. meetings. Within hours of his return, Deputy
Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz called war against Iran "unavoidable."
Prime Minister Olmert then fanned the flames, echoing President Bush
in saying, "All options, including the military option, must
remain on the table." Bush's swing through European capitals took the same
message of threats against Iran.

Meanwhile, the May 28 Asia Times On-Line reported that the Bush
administration plans to launch an air strike against Iran within the
next two months. According to the article, two key U.S. senators
briefed on the attack, Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California and
Senator Richard Lugar, Republican of Indiana, plan to go public with
their opposition to the move. But their projected New York Times op-
ed piece has yet to appear.

Even former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer warned in the
Israeli daily Haaretz of June 1 that Bush and Olmert seem to be
planning to end Iran's nuclear program "by military, rather than by
diplomatic means."

The only real opposition to the growing danger of a new war will come from the grassroots, not from the politicians. It is imperative that
we take this threat seriously and begin to mobilize now.

Stop War on Iran was the first international grassroots campaign
launched to oppose the Bush Administration's drive to war.
Since our launch in 2005, we have generated more than half a million
petitions sent to elected officials and the media. We have held
meetings across the U.S. and have taken Stop War on Iran placards,
literature and buttons to dozens of local and national antiwar rallies.

But it is clear that we must do more. This is a time when the
grassroots movement cannot be silent. Over the next few weeks and
months, we must do everything we can to mobilize to stop another
criminal war for oil. We need your help - please sign the attached
petition; help circulate it to friends, co-workers, and classmates;
print it out and take it to your school, community center, union
hall, or place of worship; and please consider making an emergency
donation to help with the enormous expenses of printing literature
and petitions, producing placards, and organizing meetings.

STOP WAR ON IRAN

Mobilitiamoci ORA per fermare la guerra all'Iran! Nelle prossime settimane e nei prossimi mesi avremo bisogno del vostro aiuto per organizzare e mobilitare un movimento popolare contro un'altra guerra illegale statunitense, basata su altre menzogne riguardo ad "armi di distruzione di massa".

La minaccia effettiva di un tale attacco è stata resa evidente la scorsa settimana, quando il primo ministro israeliano Ehud Olmert, rivolgendosi a una commissione dell'AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) a Washington DC, ha dichiarato che il programma nucleare iraniano va fermato "con ogni mezzo possibile". Democratici e repubblicani sembrarono uniti nell'esprimere sostegno incondizionato a questa posizione, presentando lo sviluppo - assolutamente legale - di energia nucleare da parte dell'Iran come una grave minaccia alla "pace mondiale".

Questa minaccia ben coordinata è salita di livello dopo che Olmert è tornato in Israele dai suoi incontri statunitensi. A poche ore dal suo rientro, il vicepremier Shaul Mofaz ha definito la guerra contro l'Iran "inevitabile". Il primo ministro Olmert ha poi soffiato sul fuoco, facendo eco a Bush nel dichiarare che "tutte le opzioni, compresa quella militare, devono restare sul tavolo". Il viaggio di Bush attraverso le capitali europee è stato impostato sulla stessa linea minacciosa contro l'Iran.

Nel frattempo, il 28 maggio Asia Times Online ha scritto che l'amministrazione Bush sta pianificando di lanciare un attacco areo contro l'Iran nei prossimi due mesi. Secondo l'articolo, due importanti senatori informati sull'attacco, Dianne Feinstein, democratica della California e Richard Lugar, repubblicano dell'Indiana, intendono dichiarare pubblicamente la loro opposizione all'attacco, ma l'articolo previsto sul New York Times non è ancora uscito.

Anche l'ex ministro degli Esteri tedesco, Joschka Fischer, il primo giugno ha avvertito il quotidiano israeliano Haaretz che Bush e Olmert sembrano aver preventivato di porre fine al programma nucleare iraniano "con mezzi militari piuttosto che diplomatici".

L'unica possibile opposizione alla crescente minaccia di una nuova guerra può venire dalla popolazione, non dai politici. E' essenziale che prendiamo sul serio questa minaccia e cominciamo a mobilitarci ora.

Stop War On Iran è stata la prima campagna popolare internazionale lanciata per opporsi alle intenzioni guerresche dell'amministrazione Bush.
