Cuban Labor Delegation DC Reception On Wednesday, July 26th, 2000, a high level delegation from Cuba representing the Cuban Confederation of Workers (CTC) will visit Washington. According to organizers in the US Cuba Labor Exchange, it is unprecedented that such a high level delegation from Cuba would be issued visas. This is an example of how the political climate is changing with regards to policy on Cuba, in the aftermath of the Elian Gonzalez affair. The Cuban participants are: Olga Rosa Gomez Cortes - General Secretary of Cultural Workers and deputy of the National Assembly of the Peoples Power. Leonel Gonzalez Gonzalez - Deputy for the National Assembly of the Peoples Power and a member of their commission of Foreign Relations. Manuel Montero Bistilleiro - Secretary of the Union Bureau of National Sports of Industry Workers Union and responsible for the relations with the Americas of the International Relations Dept. of the CTC. Please join us in welcoming this delegation to DC. We will have a reception from 7:30pm to 8:00pm, with food, drinks and ca$h bar, followed by short presentations from the delegation, and Question and Answer period. The reception will be at La Casa, 3166 Mount Pleasant Street NW. International Action Center-DC 1247 'E' Street SE, Washington, DC 20003 Phone 202-588-1205 email: npcdc@mnsinc.com

Help build support for a new trial for Mumia among workers in Dearborn, Michigan
The Adult and Occupational Education Committee of United Teachers Los Angeles, (UTLA) adopted a resolution Friday night Nov. 17, [1999] calling for the teachers union, a joint affiliate of the AFT and NEA, to join the campaign for an evidentiary hearing and new trial for Mumia Abu Jamal.
The executive board of UAW Local 417, which represents an estimated 2,000 auto parts workers, voted Oct. 12 [1999] to support the struggle against Abu-Jamals execution and the call for a new trial. The Southeast Michigan Local of the National Writers Union, representing about 100 writers, voted that same day to support Abu-Jamal. On Oct. 11, Southeast Michigan Jobs and Justice, which is backed by UAW Local 600, Teamsters Local 2040, other local unions and the Detroit Metro Chapter of the Labor Party, voted in favor of solidarity with Abu-Jamal. Excerpted from: The Sunday Journal newspaper, Oct. 31, 1999, founded by the striking Detroit Newspaper workers in 1995. These trade unionists have been locked out of their jobs for over four years.
