Students Walk Out to Protest US Military Actions
October 7, 2001
In response to the military actions against Afghanistan this afternoon, Wesleyan University is encouraging students to walk-out and join a teach-in. Please see attached press release for more details.
Our Reasons are as follows:
- To seek out education on the events that are directly and immediately affecting our lives and the lives around us; to continue exploring the underlying political and economic causes of September 11th.
- To voice our dissent with this war.
- To consciously disrupt our lives in solidarity with those that are powerless to stop the violent disruption of their lives – disruption caused by military strikes.
- To demand that civil liberties and human rights be upheld for all people, regardless of religion, ethnicity or national origin.
- To continue remembering the innocent lives lost.
We do this in solidarity with schools and communities around the world. Thank you.
Peace, Jessie Duvall (860)685-6130 jduvall@wesleyan.edu
On Monday, October 8, students at Wesleyan University in Middletown will walk out of classes to protest today‚s U.S. military strikes against Afghanistan. The students will hold a rally and teach-in for the university and the Middletown community. "As Americans, we now know what it feels like to be attacked, to watch people die in retaliation for something that has nothing to do with them. So we must speak out against the killing of innocent people in Afghanistan. We have to stop the cycle of hatred, violence and revenge," said student Una Osato. Students will walk out of their first classes on Monday morning. They will gather at the campus center, at 222 Church Street, where there will be an open mic with speakers, poets, and musicians. At 11:30, the group will march to the steps of North College. Student leaders and professors will conduct teach-ins, workshops and discussions throughout the day. Other universities throughout the country will hold similar protests. "We're disrupting our lives in solidarity with innocent people who can‚t stop the violent disruption of their own lives disruption caused by the U.S. military," said student organizer Jessie Duvall. Over the past few weeks, students at Wesleyan and at other universities have held marches, vigils and other actions in support of a constructive response to the terrorist attacks. They have emphasized the need to uphold civil liberties and human rights for all people. On September 20, students at over 150 colleges participated in a national day of action for peace and justice. About 600 Wesleyan students marched to U.S. Representative Robert Simmons‚ office to demand that he oppose military retaliation.
