PRESS RELEASE

Paris, Feb. 18 1999

Danièle Mitterrand received Julia Wright (of International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal) and Sylvain Duez (of Leonard Peltier Solidarity Group / France) at her "FRANCE LIBERTÉ" Foundation offices in Paris today.

Madame Mitterrand’s late husband was the Socialist President of the French Republic from 1981 to 1995. The former First Lady listened with attentive compassion to a briefing on the ongoing ordeals of the United States’ most internationally known political prisoners, Leonard Peltier and Mumia Abu-Jamal, and expressed active interest in attending the Millions for Mumia March in Philadelphia on April 24th. Madame Mitterrand issued a special request for Mumia Abu-Jamal’s "Live From Death Row" and "Death Blossoms", books she wishes to read before writing to Mumia in prison.

[President François Mitterrand is remembered by abolitionists throughout the world for having included the abolition of the death penalty in France as an integral part of his electoral platform. Hardly had he been sworn in than Robert Badinter, his first Minister of Justice, announced the end of capital punishment in the land which invented the guillotine]
