DEMONSTRATION AGAINST NATO IN BRUSSELS

We are sending you some news about the demonstration of 3 April against Nato, organised at the initiative of the Anti-imperialist League, together with 10 Belgian organisations and with the support of a lot of foreign organisations.
The demonstration will depart at 2 p.m. from the Parc Communal in Woluwe St Lambert (commune eastwards of Brussels, E 40 exit number 19 or 20) From the Underground (metro) station Roodebeek, take the chaussée Roodebeek until the Parc Communal.
AS THE DEMONSTRATION REMAINS FORBIDDEN UP TILL NOW, POSSIBLY WE WILL HAVE TO RESORT TO AN ALTERNATIVE PLACE OF GATHERING. WE WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

"Shame on you, Turkish army and your Nato allies"
3 April 1999 : Kurdish comrades are joigning us
Kon-Kurd, the Confederation of the Kurdish Associations in Europe, accuses Nato: "You are responsible for this genocide" . The photos of Kon-Kurd, which we publish here, are clear. The Turkish army, a Nato ally, doesn't hesitate to use chemical weapons against the Kurdish guerilla, to cut off their heads and to torture the Kurdish villagers. That's why the our Kurdish comrades are determined to demonstrate with us against Nato on 3 April.
Delegations from everywhere will demonstrate against our common ennemy Nato
The comrades of the Philippines told us they will be there in large numbers, since they are fighting against the USA installing a new military base in the Philippines. German pacifists will come, as well as delegations from Ireland, the Netherlands, France. We have received endorsing messages from parties and organisations from Argentina, Bangladesh, Denmark, France, Great-Britain, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Tchad, the USA.
Legal action for the right to demonstrate
The burgomasters of the municipalities of Brussels, Evere and Woluwe have confirmed their refusal to autorise the demonstration of 3 April, in spite of all the demands to negociate, within the rules, to obtain a place and a route that suit them. The Anti-Imperialiste League and the other organizers of the march have decided to take an urgent legal action for the right to demonstrate on the day of the 50th anniversary of Nato. At the same time they double their efforts to mobilize for the demonstration. Because the best reply to the demonstration prohibition and to the war plans of Nato and its member states will be the massive presence of young people, third world supporters, pacifists, workers and democrats on 3 April in Brussels.
The green party Ecolo refuses to demand the withdrawal of Belgium from Nato
While oppressed people, pacifists and anti-imperialists are taking action against Nato at its 50th anniversary, Ecolo ignores Nato. Worse, at its General Assembly of 13 - 14 March, the leaders of Ecolo have refused to discuss an an issue submitted to the assembly: "Belgium has to withdraw from Nato if it maintains its nuclear strategy". While Ecolo requests to denuclearize the Belgian territory and to withdraw the nuclear arms from the military base of Kleine Brogel, it eliminates the only way to reach it: withdraw from Nato. For undoubtedly the new strategy concocted by Nato for the Washington summit will be a nuclear one and a most aggressive one.
For 3 April more than ever,
the Anti-Imperialist League appeals to demonstrate for the demands of the Manifesto for Peace:
1.Disbanding Nato and its war machine
2.Supporting all peoples standing up against Nato.
Therefore:
- Nato out of Belgium, Belgium out of Nato
- An end to military occupation of the Gulf and the Balkans and the withdrawal of all foreign troops and bases everywhere in the world
- An end to the embargo against Iraq and the other countries resisting imperialism
- The end of Nato expansion eastwards
- Refusal of a European military super-power
- A total ban on nuclear weapons, beginning with the United States

3 avril ... 50 ans d'Otan
Pourquoi une autorisation de manifester contre l'Otan, pour la paix, est-elle refusée ce jour-là!?
Nous voulons alerter l'opinion publique sur le fait qu'il est impossible d' obtenir une autorisation pour manifester contre l'Otan, pour la paix, le 3 avril ! Serait-ce pour la raison que l'Otan se prépare activement à de nouvelles guerres ?
Depuis la mi-décembre, des demandes sont faites aux communes de Schaerbeek, Evere, Zaventem, et enfin Woluwe St Lambert et Bruxelles, que ce soit pour organiser une activité sportive (course pour la paix), culturelle (podium pour un programme musical pour la paix), ou pour marcher pour la paix jusque devant l'Otan. Toutes les réponses reçues jusqu'à présent sont négatives. La commune de Zaventem s'est même sentie obligée de consulter le Ministère de l 'Intérieur!
Pourtant, le droit constitutionnel de manifester est supérieur au devoir de la commune d'assurer une bonne circulation.
Les organisateurs de la manifestation du 3 avril sont donc bien décidés à défendre le droit démocratique de manifester contre l'Otan, pour la paix, le jour du 50° anniversaire de l'Otan.
D'ailleurs, jusqu'à ce jour, de nombreuses réactions positives nous sont parvenues pour participer à cette manifestation, aussi bien venant d'autres pays d'Europe (Allemagne, France, Irlande) que des différentes régions de Belgique.
En effet, en avril prochain, l'Otan célébrera " 50 ans de paix ". Mais l' Otan n'est pas une force de paix. Au contraire.
Le siège de l'Otan pour l'Europe est situé à Bruxelles. Voilà pourquoi la Ligue Anti-Impérialiste (LAI) a pris l'initiative d'organiser une marche pour la paix le 3 avril prochain, en collaboration avec l'AEPGN (Association des Etudiants pour la Prévention de la Guerre Nucléaire, l'Association El Wattan Asbl, le Collectif Kâthe Kollwitz, le Comité d'Amitié et de Fraternité pour le Soutien au Peuple Irakien en Belgique, la Coordination arabe, FEK-Bel (Fédération des Associations Kurdes en Belgique), Fire Gym (salle de sport), MML (Mouvement Marxiste Léniniste), MPLP (Médecine pour le Peuple), Rebelle, l'UNEM (Union Nationale des Etudiants Marocains), Vrede.
