Purchase a copy of a new book published by the International Action
Center and Haiti Support Network which was published to commemorate
Haiti's 200 years of struggle against racism and colonialism."Haiti: A Slave Revolution--200 Years after 1804"
This book provides essential background to understand the current
situation in Haiti, where a group calling itself the "Group of 184" or the
"Democratic Convergence" although it is fully funded by the United States,
is trying to overthrow the popularly elected president, Jean-Bertrand
Aristide. The successful revolution in Haiti against the French slave owners is a
singular event in the history of the world. It is the only time that
slaves managed to rise up, smash their oppressors and set up a new state
and social order that reflected some of their aspirations and hopes.
Between half and two-thirds of all the Haitian people died in the twelve
years of this desperate, successful struggle that led to the first free
Black nation. This book not only details how this struggle strongly shocked the United
States and the other slave owning states of the early nineteenth century
but connects it historically to another event that profoundly upset U.S.
imperialism--the election of Jean-Bertrand Aristide as haiti's president
in 1990.This is a people's history of haiti with contributions from noted authors
and activists like Frederick Douglass, Ramsey Clark, Edwidge Danticat, Ben
Dupuy, Pat Chin and Sara Flounders. You can get this book at the meeting or send us a check for
$20 plus $3 for postage to APC, 426 E. 31st St., Baltimore, Maryland
