NYC
- Jan 21: Martin Luther King Day March Against Racism
This
year, let’s help put the meaning back into the Martin Luther
King holiday on January 21st by marching against racism, oppression,
war, poverty and division. In New York, the march will assemble for
an opening rally at 32nd Street and 7th Avenue, near the offices of
radio station WABC (which recently put Don Imus back on the air!).
Then we will march to Columbus Circle and rally outside of CNN’s
offices (located inside the Time Warner building).
A wake up call: March against racism to honor Dr. King's legacy
U.S.
war provocation against Iran: Another Tonkin Gulf?
The
Bush Administration has initiated an extremely dangerous war provocation
just off Iran's coast, in the Strait of Hormuz. With Bush on his way
to the Middle East to mobilize a collection of oil-rich U.S. client
states against Iran, the U.S. government is working overtime to
create a public-relations incident to heighten tensions in the region
and threaten a new war.
Israel
threatens Gaza with all-out attack
The
Israeli siege of Gaza is an international crime of collective punishment
on an entire population. It is a crime carried out with the full support
and authorization of Washington. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert
had rejected overtures by Hamas, the militant Islamic group that
is the elected government in Gaza, for discussions about even a temporary
cease-fire.

calls for federally-funded public works program (like WPA of the 1930s)

police brutality in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
Soldiers
refuse orders in Iraq
One of the most
underreported stories from the Vietnam War is the role played by the
disintegration of military discipline as the war dragged on. While
the situation in Iraq has not reached the same point yet, revolutionaries
understand that the fact that the bosses are forced to rely on workers
in uniform to wage their wars raises the possibility that the troops
will say, “No.”
Withdrawal
is the only option: A look back at 2007 in Iraq
The
financing of U.S. president George W. Bush’s wars is now just
about accomplished for 2008. By a large majority, briefly before Dec.
25 the House of Representatives and Senate granted an additional $70
billion for the occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. A large number
of Democrats again voted for continuing the funding. What made it
easier for this bill to pass was that in the U.S. there was a changed
perception of the war in occupied Iraq.

Media
bias in the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal - -article and video
As
the case of Pennsylvania death-row political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal
enters its 27th year, despite the growing body of evidence that supports
both his innocence and the charge that he was denied a fair trial,
the mainstream media have been relentless in their bias against this
award-winning African-American journalist. This media bias is well
documented by Covert Action Quarterly, FAIR.ORG, and the documentary
film “Framing an Execution.”
A New Year's
Message from IAC founder Ramsey Clark
The
year 2007 has been another marked by endless war, lawlessness and cruelty
by the Bush administration. Thousands more Iraqis have been killed
or injured. The enormous humanitarian crisis effects millions
of Iraqis, including children, who lack basic necessities--housing,
healthcare, electricity, even food. More
U.S. soldiers are dying or injured, then facing inadequate
care and benefits. The administration continues to use deception and
lies to whip up hostility to Iran , as they did prior to the Shock and Awe bombings of
Iraq in 2003. Bush and his cronies continue to defy
international law and human rights with the brutal, illegal detentions
at Guantanamo, and widespread use of torture.

on referendum: 49 percent say yes to socialism
The
Venezuelan National Electoral Commission (CNE) early on Dec. 3 announced
the results of the previous day’s referendum on proposed major
changes to 69 articles of the Venezuelan Constitution. The “No”
vote opposing the reforms had won by a margin of less than 2 percent
over the “Yes” option, which would have deepened progressive
changes and ratified the reconstruction of society on a socialist
basis.

Musharraf, who first seized power in a 1999 coup, has declared martial

visited him, an excellent new book was released in France, a
leading British newspaper has published a major article on Mumia,
and a superb film recently premiered in London and Rome. The
following are the highlights.

Petition
calling on Congress: repeal Hyde Amendment & restore coverage
of abortion for low-income women
Abortion
is still legal in the U.S., but every year thousands of women are
denied this right because they don’t have the money to pay for
needed health care. Low-income women are often forced to use money
they need for food and rent to cover the cost of an abortion. Many
women cannot raise enough money and must continue the pregnancy and
stay trapped in poverty. Women face this difficult situation because
in 1976 Congress passed the Hyde Amendment, which excludes abortion
from government-funded health care programs.
Militant
march and direct action follow week-long challenge in front of Congress
The march on Saturday, September
29 was a departure in tone and make-up from many

to link the struggle against the war with the struggles against racism,
oppression, and economic injustice at home.

the streets of Jena, La., for more than 12 hours today. It was both
a work and a school day in this small town in rural Louisiana, far
from any major population center and accessible mainly by a two-lane
road. Yet, from dawn until dusk, the scene in downtown Jena was one
of an ever-flowing crowd of people wearing black tee shirts--people
of all ages but of one mind: to demand justice now for six African-American
teen-agers whose prosecution for a schoolyard fight with a white classmate
illuminates the racial disparities endemic to the U.S. justice system.

Yet another rampage has
occurred at a school, this time leaving 33 people dead at Virginia
Tech—the worst such incident ever at a U.S. college campus. The
news media seem stunned and surprised, yet their coverage sounds so

on the personality of the young man the police say did the shooting,
before killing himself. They talk about him being a “loner,”
depressed, perhaps angry at women. But aren’t there lonely and
depressed people all over the world? Many countries have high suicide
rates. Why is it that here some become mass murderers?

Former UN Humanitarian Coordinators for IRAQ Once Again Appeal For
The Release of Tariq Aziz Former Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq
As
two former UN Humanitarian Coordinators for Iraq we would like to
repeat the appeal we made last year to the U.S. Government for the
release of Tariq Aziz, former Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq. Tariq
Aziz has been imprisoned for the past 3 ½ years without charges. During
this period his fundamental rights under international law have been
disgarded just as in the case of other POWs and political prisoners
in Iraq. We are making this renewed appeal for Tariq Aziz because
of his poor and deteriorating health and the resulting danger to his
life.
Important
messages re: Free the Cuban Five!
I
and other LGBT activists working with the New York Free the Cuban
5 Committee very much hope that you will sign on to the call below.
The Cuban Five are political prisoners held by the United States government
for the "crime" of trying to stop U.S.-based terror attacks
against Cuba. U.S. courts recently denied the ruling for a new trial.
With this call we hope to re-invigorate outrage at the targeting and
continued imprisonment of these political prisoners.

Anti-War Movement Protests U.S. Bombings & Occupations of Iraq and
Somalia
In
addition to the escalation of the war in Iraq, the Bush administration
has embarked upon a bombing campaign in the east African nation of
Somalia which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians.
AC-130 Hercules aircraft have been utilized to destroy communities
in the areas around Ras Komboni, where the U.S. claims al-Qaida fighters
responsible for the bombing of the American embassies in Tanzania
and Kenya in 1998 are taking refuge.
Hands
Off Iran! - Tell Bush, Congress, and Halliburton
As
the war in Iraq drags on into a fourth brutal year, the same politicians
who led the U.S. to war in 2003 are preparing for a new war --this
time against the people of Iran. Once again using the pretext of "weapons
of mass destruction," the U.S. is moving the forces into place
in preparation for a possible attack. The USS Eisenhower strike force,
with some 800 Tomahawk cruise missiles and a fleet of bombers, has
moved into the Persian Gulf.

to strengthen their regional linkages to resist further U.S. militarization

Stop
the Draft - Take action now
A
new bill to be introduced in Congress in January will mandate military
service for men and women between the ages of 18 and 42. The failure
of the U.S. effort to occupy Iraq, as well as plans to take military
action against Iran and possibly North Korea, has stretched the military
to the breaking point and the Pentagon needs thousands of more troops
to carry out the agenda of global dominance.

Lebanon: Hezbollah helps mend divisions
Traveling
throughout war-torn Lebanon, we realized it is impossible to understand
the historic accomplishment of the resistance or the vast reconstruction
underway without understanding the role of Hezbollah in Lebanese society.
Everyone we met wanted to discuss this one topic. Lebanon is a complex
multi-ethnic, multi-religious country. Under French colonial rule,
the entire state structure of Lebanon was rigidly divided into religious
groupings. There was no civil society and social services in Lebanon
were organized by the different religions. EYEWITNESS

The
U.S. role in Darfur, Sudan
What
is fueling the campaign now sweeping the U.S. to “Stop Genocide in
Darfur”? Campus organizations have suddenly begun organizing petitions,
meetings and calls for divestment. A demonstration was held April
30 on the Mall in Washington, D.C., to “Save Darfur.” Again and again
it is said that “something” must be done. “Humanitarian forces” and
“U.S. peacekeepers” must be deployed immediately to stop “ethnic cleansing.”
UN troops or NATO forces must be used to stop “genocide.” The U.S.
government has a “moral responsibility to prevent another Holocaust.”

July 31, 2006, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted
Resolution 1696, demanding Iran suspend all uranium enrichment related
and reprocessing activities, including research and development by
August 30, 2006. This resolution was passed before Iran had
an opportunity to study and respond to the package of incentives,
which Iran had said it would respond to by August 22, 2006.
It states that Iran either complies with the provisions of 1626 and
suspends uranium enrichment or will face the possibility of economic
and diplomatic sanctions by the powers that sponsored the draft of
the resolution.

could result in a new trial. This would be the first time his side
of the case against conviction would be heard by a jury.

Truth Commission Statement on Pentagon Policy of Shooting Civilians

A
letter written fifty-six years ago was recently unearthed by a Harvard
historian and is getting a lot of attention. U.S. Ambassador to Seoul
during the Korean War, John J Muccio wrote the letter to U.S. Undersecretary

military had of shooting Korean refugees. It isn't the only evidence,
but it is unambiguous and from the highest level, and because of that,
very important.

A
little known aspect of the tragedy engulfing Iraq is the systematic
liquidation of the country's academics. Even according to conservative
estimates, over 250 educators have been assassinated, and many hundreds
more have disappeared. With thousands fleeing the country in fear
for their lives, not only is Iraq undergoing a major brain drain,
the secular middle class - which has refused to be co-opted by the
US occupation - is being decimated, with far-reaching consequences
for the future of Iraq.
