Brussels, Belgium: Communists and other progressives at a seminar here May 2-4 cheered loudest for those representatives of Balkan countries who showed the strongest determination to combat NATO’s war against Yugoslavia. The seminar, organized by the Labor Party of Belgium (PTB), drew representatives of 69 progressive and revolutionary movements in 40 countries. Among those speaking at a public forum on NATO were Mumia Abu-Jamal’s attorney, Len Weinglass, who read excerpts from the U.S. death-row political prisoner’s statement against the war. Korea: The US forces of occupation in south Korea regularly conduct dangerous war manoeuvres simulating an invasion of People’s Korea and ‘rehearsing for nuclear war’.

Japan: Participation in these manoeuvres alongside the US has become a central feature of the remilitarisation of Japan.

Taiwan: Now the US-Japan-south-Korea three-way military alliance is being extended to China’s Province of Taiwan also; altogether this amounts to a new ‘NATO in the Far East’.

Yugoslavia: NATO’s criminal attack on Yugoslavia aims to give a warning to Russia that the US, Britain and their allies intend to be boss in Eastern Europe.

Threats to China: The threats to make People’s Korea a ‘second Yugoslavia’ are intended to send the same message to China and the other people of the Far East that the US and its allies aim to be boss in that region also.Terrorism The US terrorist attack on China’s Embassy in Belgrade was intended to reinforce this threat.

In our name! The Blair government gives its support in many ways to this dangerous US policy in the Far East. Join representatives of the Chinese, Korean and other Asian communities in Britain at this meeting, which aims to alert public opinion to this dangerous war threat.

Meanwhile the British government and the colonialist British media have attracted the ridicule and contempt of the world’s people for their slavish support for US terrorism and their stupid parroting of Nato’s snivelling ‘excuses’ for the ‘accidental’ terrorist action. All who defend justice, all who support the independence of peoples, and all who wish to defend world peace and prevent the drift towards world war, are invited to join this demonstration. Sechelt, British Columbia, Canada Saturday, April 17, the Sunshine Coast Peace Group will be holding a non-violent anti-war demonstration at the Sechelt cenotaph starting at 12:00 and ending at 1:00 pm. This will coincide with a series of demonstrations and events organized all over the world on April 17.For more info, you may call at 885-4353.

About twenty local people of all ages demonstrated against the war at the Sechelt Cenotaph yesterday. If one adjusts proportionally for population density (Sechelt: 7000), this amounts to about 2800 if the demo was held in downtown Vancouver (1000 000). Demonstrators played drums, distributed leaflets and conversed with interested pedestrians in the village of Sechelt, British Columbia. The public response was very positive. People are really beginning to question the official spin that is being put on this war. The Sunshine Coast Peace Group is holding an organizational meeting every Thursday at 7:00 pm at the Sechelt Elementary Library until the bombing stops. GREECE

Daily demonstrations have been held in Greece, where workers staged a two-hour general strike against the war on April 2

Thessaloniki, Greece ā I think you should know about the protests and actions of people in Thessaloniki, Greece to NATO forces. In several occasions simple people blocked the convoys with their cars, once some supporters of a party messed with the road signs of English army and as a result, many confused soldiers found themselves driving in the central fruit market of Thessaloniki instead of the borders with FYROM. It was a very funny joke. People have been laughing for days. At another incident, a cyclist broke with his helmet the windscreen of a German army jeep. Also British troops are blocked inside of the port of Thessaloniki for two weeks. People outside the port have created a human wall. So for two weeks you can see in the port British troops sunbathing inside the port. You can find more about these things on the sites of Greek newspapers such as those http://ta-nea.dolnet.gr / http://www.ethnos.gr/

Anti-war protests took place throughout GREECE on May Day.

THESSALONIKI: In the northern city of THESSALONIKI, Greece, protesters blockaded the city’s port gates for 24 hours. In doing so, they blocked NATO from transporting military equipment to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, where it would be used in the war. Three thousand people also marched on the U.S. consulate in that city.

SOLINKA: On April 29,  a NATO convoy got lost on its way to Macedonia, when members of the city’s "anti-war committee" switched road signs to direct them away from the port. The workers then blocked all ways to the port until May Day, when thousands rallied in Aristotle Square in solidarity with the peoples of Yugoslavia.

ATHENS: Ten thousand anti-war demonstrators marched to the U.S. mission in central ATHENS to protest the war. They burned U.S. flags and an effigy of President Clinton as they chanted, "Imperialism won’t pass."

PIRAEUS and Patras: Anti-war demonstrations also took place in PIRAEUS and Patras, the Athens News Agency reported.

Athensā Sunday (April 4), Syntagma sq. (18:00), called by unions and political organisations, best regards, Alphonsos Pangas alfon@pobox.com   Athens, Greece

Salonica,ā Sunday (April 4), starting 11:00 in the morning from the White Tower, which will go, using various means of transportations, to the border with FYROM at Evzonoi, where the NATO forces pass from Greece into FYROM. best regards, Alphonsos Pangas alfon@pobox.com    Athens, Greece

Salonicaā Tonight (April 2), there was an open-air concert in Salonica, Greece's second city, expressing the solidarity of the Greek people towards the Yugoslavian. More than 100.000 people attended, defying the rain. The concert was broadcast live by the Greek and Yugoslavian TV. Also tonight, there was a similar, although on a smaller scale, concert in Piraeus, the port of Athens. A little earlier on the same day (around 8 o clock), a demonstration and march to the American embassy by soldiers took place in Athens. Soldiers in Greece, like in most of Europe, are conscripts, not mercenaries like in the US. The astonishing thing about this demonstration, attended by a few hundreds of soldiers and sailors, is that it is illegal for soldiers to participate in any kind of political activity. As the Greek government has actively been involved in the side of the NATO, it is very clear that the demonstrators were risking being arrested and court-martialed. This may be the first time after WWII that soldiers demonstrate on their own (there were small groups of soldiers that took part in demonstrations around 15-20 years ago, but that was within large demonstrations, of tens of thousands of people, who would protect them from possible arrest.) best regards, Alphonsos Pangas alfon@pobox.com   Athens, Greece

Greeks in Belgrade ā Wednesday (April 7): Other future acts of solidarity from Greece, include a football match between Belgrade's "Partisan" and the Greek "AEK" team, which will be held in Belgrade this Wednesday (April 7), defying the NATO bombings, and a future concert in Belgrade, in which Greek artists will take part. best regards, Alphonsos Pangas alfon@pobox.com  Athens, Greece

recent actions:

Aktion: Weekend of March 27: At least 1000 people demonstrated outside the air base, where, according to police, American Awac radar planes are normally stationed.

Athens:  On Friday, 26 March, 100,000 demonstrators marched to the U.S. Embassy.   The shouted "Clinton, Fascist, Murderer."  Police clashed with protesters who threw rocks and eggs at the U.S. and British embassies and lit fires and smashed store windows and cars. Some light injuries were reported. Greece,   leading the dissident wing of  NATO, has been calling for an immediate halt to the bombing and a return to the negotiating table. In addition, it has  refused to offer its military forces to join the assault. It was the largest demonstration of its kind in at least the last 20 years.

Piraeus: On Saturday, march 27, about 200 people marched through the port of Piraeus clashing with police.  No serious injuries or arrests were reported.

Salonica: Friday March 26: Demonstrations broke out in the northern Greek port of Salonica. The port was used as a transit point for NATO ground forces on their way to neighboring Macedonia.

Thessaloniki.: Large scale anti-NATO mobilization Police attack against peace-loving people. The intense and multiform mass rallies against the new intervention of NATO in the Balkans are still continued. The mobilizations are organized by the Communist Party of Greece, the Greek Committee for the International D tente and Peace (EEDYE), the Young Action for Peace (NDE), as well as Trade Unions. A few days ago demonstrators of the Communist Party of Greece managed to block the transit of a NATO s train , which carried tanks. They managed to blockade the lines and forced the train to return to the city of Thessaloniki. On the 18th of March, a powerful anti-war rally took place in Thessaloniki and the member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece, D. Gontikas, was the main speaker. Messages of solidarity were sent by the New Communist Party of Yugoslavia, and the Marxist-Platform of the Bulgarian Socialist Party. On Friday the 19th of March, one more peaceful rally took place, organized by the EEDYE, and the NDE outside the building where the International Conference for the NATO s 50 years anniversary was held.

The main slogans of the above rally were: rDissolution of the NATO now-no more intervention in the Balkans_, rNo soldier in Yugoslavia, we do not fight for the USA and Germany_, rthe same story 50 years now, juntas, wars, terrorism_, rImperialism is our common enemy_. The demonstrators sustained an unprovoked attack by the police. The police used against the demonstrators bats and various chemicals. There were many more demonstrations and concerts on the 30 and 31 March 1999 and the 1st of April 1999 in the big cities of Greece as well. INDIA

Opposition is wide throughout Asia, with India, China and Vietnam all condemning the bombing. Vietnam lost 3 million people during the U.S. war there in the 1960s and 1970s. To Vietnam, the war against Yugoslavia looks much the same."NATO is made up of countries like Britain, the U.S., Spain, Germany and Italy that have a long history of colonial rule over much of the world, and they have no right to militarily impose their views on other nations," an unnamed Asian official said in a March 29 IPS report.

Calcutta: A message from All India Anti-Imperialist Forum: Today, the 27th of March, under the auspices of the Anti Imperialist Forum, a protest demonstration was staged in front of USIS, J.L. Nehru Road, Calcutta, demanding the immediate stoppage of indiscriminate bombing on Yugoslavia by U.S.-led NATO, which have taken the lives of more than a hundred people including children and women. This rally also urged upon the people to raise their voice against the gangsterism of U.S. imperialism, which has violated all international norms and the sovereignty of the other nations. As a mark of protest of this barbaric attack on Yugoslavia an effigy of Bill Clinton, who has engineered this attack, was burned. A memorandum signed by Sri Manik Mukherjee, the Vice-president of A.I.F., was handed over to USIS authorities with a request to send the same to the Bill Clinton, president of U.S.A. R. JAPAN

Tokyo--> 50,000 demonstrate in Tokyo: The following article I translated from the Gifu Shinbun Newspaper, May 22, 1999. The tiny article is towards the bottom of page 28 in a newspaper with 30 pages—obviously not considered an important news item by the press. The text in brackets is explanatory information I have added.

Last night (the evening of the 21st) 50,000 people gathered in Meiji Park in Tokyo to protest the new laws related to the "New Guidelines" for increased cooperation between Japanese and American military forces. The 50,000 union members and citizens called for abolishing this new law, saying "This is a law for cooperation in war. Once more our country’s people will be entangled in war." This action was organized by calling out religious groups, pilots and navy members, drivers, and longshoremen. Union members under the umbrella of an alliance between the Socialist Party and the Communist Party and the National Labor Federation also participated. This was the largest demonstration since the beginning of the Diet conference [on the issue.]   [The New Guidelines are illegal under the Constitution of Japan. Article 9 of that document says, "Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes. In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized." The Constitution can be found at http://www.jca.ax.apc.org/peace-st/. ] Peace, Joe Essertier

Tokyo ā First Anti NATO Bombing was held in Tokyo on April 2, under a joint auspice of InterBand , a number of women's group helping refugees in former Yugoslavia, and NGOs involved in security issues. Nobuhiko SUTO Professor, Tokai University and Chairman of InterBand Phone : 81-45-439-4003 Fax: 81-45-439-4004 E-mail: sutoband@gol.com    Two days later, 400 anti-war activists from all over Japan came to Tokyo for a meeting and demonstration to protest the "New Guidelines" for Japanese-U.S. military collaboration. They tie the Japanese military to U.S. aggressive moves anywhere in the world. The protest also warned of the impending end of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, which bans war.

MACEDONIA

Skopje:  For the second day, police broke up demonstrators trying to reach the American Embassy.  In an effort to avoid a replay of Thursday's attacks of Western embassies and NATO personnel, police cordoned off parts of the city. Reuters also reported that a crowd attempted to converge on the French, German and British embassies. German Embassy guards fired two percussion grenades to quell the crowd after windows were broken and the ground floor was ransacked.

The action was organized by the China Reunification Association, the Labor Party (Laodongdang) and allied groupings. The demonstrators carried banners and placards in Chinese and English condemning NATO war crimes. They attempted to hand in an open letter of protest addressed to President Clinton, calling for an immediate and unilateral cease fire by NATO and an apology and reparations to both China and Yugoslavia. The angry protesters also threw red paint at the walls and locked steel doors of the Institute, which performs the role of an embassy in Taiwan.

UKRAINE

In Ukraine, communist-led protests continued into a third day, as of Saturday, 3/27,  while two government ministers traveled to Belgrade to offer mediation in possible peace talks.

VIETNAM

Opposition is wide throughout Asia, with India, China and Vietnam all condemning the bombing. Vietnam lost 3 million people during the U.S. war there in the 1960s and 1970s. To Vietnam, the war against Yugoslavia looks much the same."NATO is made up of countries like Britain, the U.S., Spain, Germany and Italy that have a long history of colonial rule over much of the world, and they have no right to militarily impose their views on other nations," an unnamed Asian official said in a March 29 IPS report.

YUGOSLAVIA

Belgrade:  Daily demonstrations and concerts of tens of thousands in Belgrade. People are wearing targets on their chests and protesting in the main square while the bombing is going on.

The May Day protests in YUGOSLAVIA were dazzling displays of resistance in the face of imperialist aggression. In Belgrade, Serbian television said workers were going ahead with May Day rallies in defiance of NATO air strikes. Appeals sent from numerous rallies of workers throughout Yugoslavia—BOR, KRALJEVO, ARANDELOVAC, KRUSEVAC, PODGORICA and many other towns—appealed to workers of the world to raise their voice against the fierce bombing of Yugoslavia.

In Belgrade, April 3: 15,000-20,000 rallied on April 3. Demonstrators have been wearing target signs with the words "NATO target" pinned to their chests. Thousands of sleep-deprived residents carrying placards and waving flags gathered in Belgrade’s Republic Square for a "rock against the bombs" protest, the French Press Agency reported April 4. "Sorry, we are still singing" was the placard seen most often in the crowd of mostly young demonstrators.

In the Montenegro capital Podgorica, an anti-NATO outdoor rock concert April 4 drew over 20,000.
