Elected officialsTomorrow, March 18, 2004, representatives from the ANSWER Coalition and United for Peace and Justice will discuss the upcoming NYC protest planned for Saturday, March 20, to mark the one year anniversary of the bombing of Iraq. The protest is expected to draw tens of thousands of people.
Organizers will preview Saturday’s demonstration, set to assemble Saturday on Madison Ave. north of 23rd St. and discuss details of the kickoff rally, march through Midtown Manhattan, and closing rally. A speakers list will be announced.
Representatives from the two organizations will also address the ongoing struggle with NYPD over their plans to use cattle pens and prevent people from freely assembling. Organizers have mounted a public campaign to stop the NYPD efforts to obstruct the rally.
March 20 is a Global Day of Action; momentum is growing on a local, regional, national and international scale. There are now demonstrations planned in over 200 U.S. cities in 36 states, and more than 50 countries around the world. The NYC protest will bring people from the entire Northeast, including peace trains from Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut.
