The National Writers Union: "Take Action Against the Iraq War"

October 18, 2003--The National Writers Union, along with US Labor Against the War, has taken a strong position against the war on Iraq as well as against the Patriot Act. As billions of dollars are spent on the occupation of Iraq, workers in the US continue to face unemployment, economic uncertainty, and lack of funding for basic human needs such as education and health care. It is predominately working class young men and women who are risking their lives fighting this war. Under the cover of 'war without end', the Bush administration is able to distract attention from the real issues affecting working American families.

On the weekend of October 25th, the union encourages you to take action against the war in one of two ways:

In Washington, DC there will be a national march against the war on Saturday, October 25th. In addition to many labor unions participating, there will be a contingent of writers, Poets Against the War, who will also be holding an anti-war reading prior the march. More details are below, but if would like to march with the NWU contingent please contact action@nwu.org so that we can have enough banners and signs and meet up.

In Chicago, on October 24th and October 25th, US Labor Against the War will be holding a national assembly. More information about registering for the conference can be found below.

For more on the NWU's position on this issue, visit NWU - Resolution Against War With Iraq (http://nwu.org/pic/0302iraq.htm ) and NWU - Call for Press Freedom During Times of War (http://nwu.org/pic/0204free.htm ).

I hope you will join with us in Washington, DC or Chicago next weekend. Please see the full details below.

In solidarity,

Marybeth Menaker
NWU President
