Mar. 15 -- the Next Crucial Step / Why the Next 2 Weeks Are Critical
MARCH 15, 2003 - THE NEXT CRUCIAL STEP National Mass Emergency Anti-War March and Rally to Stop the War
WHITE HOUSE - Washington, DC
CIVIC CENTER -- San Francisco, CAIn San Francisco - meet at 11 am at Civic Center Plaza for a mass permitted rally and march. Further details to follow.
WHY THE NEXT TWO WEEKS ARE CRITICAL
Tens of thousands of people will be converging for Emergency National Anti-War Marches on Saturday MARCH 15 on the White House in Washington, DC, at Civic Center in San Francisco, as well as in Downtown Los Angeles.
The street protests in the United States and around the world in the last few months have become the biggest single political factor confronting and restraining the war-makers. We have always believed that the only thing that could prevent this aggression against Iraq was for all of us -- the people of the world -- to organize and become a major political force through mass action.
Heated public opinion is beginning to create fissures inside of even the U.S. government, as officials begin to distance themselves from U.S. government policy, reminiscent of an important phenomenon during Vietnam. During the 1960s this led to the publication of the Pentagon Papers, as well as the release of other information that revealed that the government had been lying to the people. In this regard, we note the recent resignation of John Brady Kiesling, a career diplomat with twenty years of service in the State Department. In his resignation letter, Kiesling wrote "I am resigning because I have tried and failed to reconcile my conscience with my ability to represent the current U.S. Administration."
With each passing day the Bush Administration encounters new hurdles that constitute a growing deterrent force to war. On Saturday a resolution allowing the U.S. to use Turkey as a launching pad for war failed in the Turkish Parliament, reflecting the fierce anti-war sentiment in almost 100 % of the Turkish population. This surprise vote presents not only another diplomatic blow to the U.S. was plans, but a major military set-back as well.
We must use every moment available to continue to build this global grassroots movement into the most serious obstacle facing the war-makers. THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WILL BE CRITICAL. The Bush administration is doing everything to steamroll world public opinion. Bush is assembling a coalition not of the willing, but of the bribed and coerced, as they twist arms and hand out tens of billions in an attempt to manipulate member nation states and violate the U.N. Charter.
We believe that we must keep up and even increase the pace of anti-war activity in this critical period. People of conscience are asked to do everything we can to make Mar. 15 a date that looms for the Bush administration.
