Statement from the International Action Center on Events of September 11, 2001

This statement was written from New York City.
Everyone here has been deeply affected by today's events. The International Action Center extends its most heartfelt sympathies and condolences to all those who have lost loved ones today as well as the thousands of workers who were in lower Manhattan today.
While at this moment thousands of families are in mourning for the death and injuries of loved ones, the Bush administration is taking advantage of the tragic human toll to strengthen the forces of repression while intensifying the Pentagon's war drive, especially in the Middle East.
Arab and Muslim peoples in the United States are reporting that they are facing racist harassment in their communities, on their jobs and at mosques. Anti-Arab racism is a poison that should be repudiated. We call on all people who oppose racism to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Arab-American community in the face of this reactionary frenzy.
After the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995, the U.S. government and media were quick to speculate that Arab and Islamic organizations were responsible; but as everyone now knows, extreme right-wing Army veteran Timothy McVeigh was to blame.
New War Danger
The International Action Center urges all anti-war activists and progressive people to remain on the highest alert in opposing the Bush administration and the Pentagon's plans to use this crisis as the springboard for a new round of aggression in the Third World, especially against the people of the Middle East.
In August 1998, the Pentagon delivered murderous cruise missile air strikes against a pharmaceutical plant in Sudan without any evidence, supposedly in retaliation for the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Kenya. The cruise missiles destroyed the Al Shifa Pharmaceutical factory that provided most of Sudan's medicines. Thousands of African people perished as a direct result of the Pentagon's bombing.
President Ronald Reagan ordered the invasion of Grenada in the Caribbean shortly after a truck bomb exploded at a U.S. Marine Corps base in Lebanon in 1983. Under Bush senior, over 2,000 Panamanians were killed in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve in 1989 under the pretext of the war on drugs.
In 1986, after pointing a finger at Syria, Iran and several Palestinian organizations for an explosion at a discothèque in Germany, U.S. aircraft bombed Tripoli and Benzagi in Lybia. Hundreds of civilians, including children, died in their sleep as the U.S. Air Force carried out this nighttime sneak attack.
We ask activists and the people of this country to be ready to protest new Pentagon aggression in the coming period.
The Bush administration will use this current crisis as a means to justify a further expansion of the Pentagon's war budget at the expense of money for housing, education, health care, jobs and other human needs.
Danger of More State Repression
Throughout the country, the military, FBI and local police authorities are now sealing off large urban areas, blockading bridges, tunnels and roads, and mobilizing a massive presence of police and the National Guard. All this reveals an advanced stage of planning for domestic repression that can be used against the progressive and labor movements, and the Black, Latino, Asian, Arab and other oppressed communities.
All the more reason to resist the current efforts to strengthen police measures under cover of the present crisis.
Build Solidarity
The people of New York City and the country cannot allow the Bush administration and the Pentagon to play on their genuine feelings of shock and disbelief to stir reaction and strengthen the forces of repression. This will not help the working and oppressed people of this or any country.
The only way to respond to today's events is to extend solidarity to the families and friends of those who perished or who were injured at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon; build global solidarity with people around the world struggling against war, poverty and exploitation; and deepen the movement to protest new Pentagon aggression.

Todo el mundo aquí se ha visto profundamente afectado por los sucesos que han tenido lugar hoy. El International Action Center (IAC) quiere expresar su sentimiento de simpatía y condolencia a todos aquellos que han perdido seres queridos así como a los miles de trabajadores que se encontraban en Manhatan en el día de hoy.
Mientras en estos momentos miles de familias están de luto por la muerte o las heridas de sus seres queridos, la Administración Bus aprovecha en su beneficio la tragedia humana para fortalecer las fuerzas de represión en tanto que intensifica los planes de guerra del Pentágono, especialmente e Oriente Medio.
La población árabe y musulmana de EEUU está informando de que están sufriendo acosos racistas en sus comunidades, en sus trabajos y en las mezquitas. El racismo anti-árabe es un veneno que debe ser repudiado. Llamamos a las paersonas que se oponen al racismo a que apoyen hombro con hombro a la comunidad árabe-americana para hacer frente a esta locura reaccionaria.
Tras el bombardeo del edificio federal de la ciudad de Oklahoma en 1995, el gobierno de EEUU y los medios de comunicación especularon de manera inmediata y sin pruebas acerca de la responsabilidad de organizaciones árabes e islámicas; sin embargo, como todo el mundo sabe hoy, un veterano del ejército norteamericano de extrema derecha, Timothy McVeigh, fue hallado posteriormente culpable.
Nuevo peligro de guerra
El IAC hace un llamamiento a todos los activistas contrarios a la guerra y a la gente progresista a permanecer en estado de máxima alerta y a oponerse a los planes de la Administración Bus y del Pentágono de utilizar la crisis como trampolín para una nueva oleada de agresión al Tercer Mundo, especialmente contra los pueblos de Oriente Medio.
En agosto de 1998, el Pentágono lanzó deliberadamente ataques aéreos con misiles crucero contra una planta farmacéutica en Sudán supuestamente en represalia por el bombardeo de la Embajada de EEUU en Kenia. Los misiles crucero destruyeron la fábrica de productos farmacéuticos Al Shifa que suministraba la mayor parte de las medicinas en Sudán. Miles de africanos murieron como consecuencia directa del resultado del bombardeo decretado por el Pentágono.

Hacemos una llamamiento a los activistas y al pueblo de este país para que estén listos a denunciar y protestar por cualquier nueva agresión del Pentágono que se pueda producir en el futuro inmediato.
La Administración Bush usará esta crisis actual como excusa para justificar el aumento del presupuesto de guerra del Pentágono a expensas de las partidas destinadas a vivienda, educación, sanidad, empleo y otros servicios sociales parar atender las necesidades humanas.
Peligro de endurecimiento de la represión interna
A lo largo del país, el ejército, el FBI y las autoridades de policía locales están cerrando amplias áreas urbanas, bloqueando puentes, túneles y carreteras y movilizando a una masivamente la presencia de la policía así como a la Guardia Nacional. Todo ello revela un estado avanzado de planificación de la represión a nivel interno que puede ser utilizada contra los movimientos progresistas y de trabajadores y contra las oprimidas comunidades negras, latinas, asiáticas, árabes, etc.
Hay que resistir a los esfuerzos que se están llevando a cabo para fortalecer las medidas policiales bajo el pretexto de la presente crisis.
Construir la solidaridad
El pueblo de la ciudad de Nueva York y de todo el país no debe permitir a la Administración Bush y al Pentágono que juegue con sus sentimientos genuinos de conmoción y duda para provocar la reacción y el fortalecimiento de las fuerzas de represión. Ello no ayudará a la población trabajadora y oprimida de este u otro país.
La única respuesta a los sucesos de hoy es extender la solidaridad a las familias y amigos de aquellos que han perecido o a quienes han resultado heridos en las torres del Centro del Comercio Internacional y del Pentágono; construir la solidaridad global al lado de los pueblos del mundo que luchan contra la guerra, la pobreza y la explotación e intensificar el movimiento de protesta contra nuevas agresiones del Pentágono.

Jeder hier wurde von den Ereignissen des heutigen Tages tief getroffen. Das International Action Center übermittelt allen, die den Verlust ihrer Lieben zu beklagen und den Tausenden Arbeitern, die sich heute im unteren Teil Manhattans aufgehalten haben, sein herzlichstes Mitgefühl und Beileid.
Während in diesem Moment Tausende Familien den Tod und die Verwundung ihrer Lieben betrauern, nutzt die Bush-Administration diese menschliche Tragödie, um die Repression zu verstärken, indem sie die Kriegstreiberei des Pentagon vor allem im Mittleren Osten intensiviert.
Araber und Muslime in den Vereinigten Staaten berichten von rassistischen Belästigungen in ihrem Wohnviertel, am Arbeitsplatz und beim Besuch von Moscheen. Der antiarabische Rassismus ist ein Gift, das zurückgewiesen werden muß. Wir appellieren an alle, die Rassismus bekämpfen, sich Schulter an Schulter mit der arabisch-amerikanischen Gemeinschaft diesem rassistischen Wahnsinn entgegenzustellen.
Nach dem Bombenanschlag auf das Behördenhochhaus in Oklahoma City 1995 haben US-Regierung und Medien schnell spekuliert, arabische und islamistische Organisationen hätten die Tat zu verantworten; heute weiß jeder, daß der rechtsextremistische Armeeveteran Timothy McVeigh die Tat begangen hat.
Neue Kriegsgefahr
Das International Action Center ermahnt alle Kriegsgegner und fortschrittlichen Menschen in höchster Alarmbereitschaft zu bleiben, um die Pläne der Bush-Administration und des Pentagon zu durchkreuzen, diese Krise als ein Sprungbrett für eine neue Aggressionsrunde gegen die Dritte Welt – insbesondere gegen die Menschen im Mittleren Osten – zu nutzen.
Im August 1998 schickte das Pentagon mörderische Cruise-Missile-Raketen gegen eine Medikamentenfabrik im Sudan. Ohne jeden Beweis rechtfertigte man dies mit dem Bombenanschlag auf die US-Botschaft in Kenia. Die Cruise Missiles zerstörten die pharmazeutische Fabrik von Al Shifa, die den größten Teil der sudanesischen Medikamente lieferte. Tausende Afrikaner starben in unmittelbarer Konsequenz der Bombardierung durch das Pentagon.
1983 befahl Präsident Ronald Reagan die Invasion Grenadas kurz nachdem eine Autobombe in einer Marine-Kaserne im Libanon explodiert war. Unter Bush senior starben am Heiligen Abend des Jahres 1998 2000 Panamesen mitten in der Nacht unter dem Vorwand des Krieges gegen die Drogen.

Wir rufen die Aktivisten und die Menschen dieses Landes dazu auf, sich auf Proteste gegen eine neue, sich bereits abzeichnende Aggression des Pentagon vorzubereiten.
Die Bush-Administration wird die gegenwärtige Krise dazu nutzen, die weitere Aufrüstung auf Kosten von Wohnungsbau, Bildung, Gesundheitsvorsorge, Arbeitsplätzen und anderer menschlicher Bedürfnisse zu rechtfertigen.
Mehr staatliche Repression
Zur Zeit riegeln Militär, FBI und die lokale Polizei im ganzen Land große städtische Gebiete ab, blockieren Brücken, Tunnel und Straßen und mobilisieren ein gigantisches Aufgebot von Polizei und Nationalgarde. Dies alles offenbart ein fortgeschrittenes Stadium in der Planung zur Repression im Innern, die gegen die fortschrittliche und Arbeiterbewegung, sowie gegen Schwarze, Latinos, Asiaten, Araber und andere unterdrückte Gemeinschaften eingesetzt werden kann.
Dies alles sind Gründe, sich den gegenwärtigen Bestrebungen entgegenzustellen, die Befugnisse der Polizei unter dem Deckmantel der gegenwärtigen Krise zu erweitern.
Verstärkt die Solidarität
Die Menschen in New York und im übrigen Land dürfen der Bush-Administration und dem Pentagon nicht erlauben, ihre ehrlichen Gefühle von Schock und Verzweiflung zu instrumentalisieren, um die Reaktion zu schüren und den Repressionsapparat auszubauen. Dies wird den arbeitenden und unterdrückten Menschen dieses und jeden anderen Landes nicht helfen.
Die richtige Antwort auf die Ereignisse des heutigen Tages ist die Verstärkung der Solidarität mit den Familien und Freunden derer, die im World Trade Center und im Pentagon getötet oder verletzt wurden. Verstärkt die weltweite Solidarität mit den Menschen überall auf der Welt, die gegen Krieg, Armut und Ausbeutung kämpfen und verstärkt die Protestbewegung gegen neue Aggressionen des Pentagon.
