It is now time to take a serious tally of who is prepared to risk arrest for Mumia’s freedom on July 3.
July 3 was chosen as the time to inaugurate a new level of action for Mumia because the Supreme Court is likely to rule on his case in the Fall, leaving him with few further legal remedies. Mumia’s health problems now add to the urgency of this moment. We picked the July 4th weekend for the obvious symbolic reasons, as well as to support the International Concerned Friends and Family annual July 4th demonstration. Mumia was originally sentenced on July 3, 1982.
The scenario for the action and legal support are in advanced stages of planning. We do not want individuals who are not part of an affinity group to risk arrest on July 3, and are asking all people not trained in nonviolent civil disobedience to attend a training where new affinity groups will be formed. There will be one New York-based civil disobedience training on Saturday, June 26, 11 a.m. till 4 p.m., at 411 West 114th Street, second floor (between Amsterdam and Morningside, 1 or 9 train to 116 Street/Columbia University). On Friday, July 2nd we will conduct an additional training in Philadelphia, as well a meeting of all affinity group members. Call 212-330-8029 to reserve your spot at one of these trainings!
If you are interested in the civil disobedience, cannot attend either of those trainings, and have not been trained in civil disobedience and/or are not part of an affinity group, call us for more information, as there may be trainings held in other localities. A final check-in of all affinity group spokes people will take place on the Saturday morning before the action; all affinity groups must have at least one representative at the July 3 check-in and must have all those planning to risk arrest attend the meeting on the evening of July 2. This ensures the safety, security and coordination of everyone involved, as well as a basic level of shared decision making.
As you can see from the growing member of organizations and individuals listed on the flyer, we are moving forward step by step. But we need you whether risking arrest, joining the legal support vigil, or contributing money for possible fines and other expenses. Everyone can help us to move this forward.

in calling for a Mass Nonviolent Civil Disobedience Action Liberty Bell Saturday, July 3, 1999, 12 noon, Philadelphia, PA along with a simultaneous July 3 support vigil and a huge July 4 Legal March thru Philly and Rally at the Liberty Bell In 1995, with only 10 days left before his scheduled execution, the international movement for Mumia Abu-Jamal’s liberation stopped the state from killing him. Once again, the movement to save Mumia’s life has reached a critical juncture. Chief defense lawyer Leonard Weinglass has stated clearly that Mumia’s federal appeals, while not exhausted, cannot be relied upon to stop an execution. History has shown repeatedly-in the movements for women’s suffrage, civil rights, an end to the Vietnam war, AIDS care, workers’ rights and police accountability-civil disobedience has forced those in power to respond to the people’s demands for justice. The time has come for us to escalate our resistance. Mumia needs you!
