Dear friends,
In the past few days, we have received a flood of emails and phone calls from people who were arrested at the April 15 demonstration against the Prison-Industrial Complex.
We wanted to thank everyone for getting in touch and let you know that we are pursuing a class action law suit against Washington DC and its police department for the illegal arrest and detention of 678 activists, as well as for the other acts of "preventive detention" that took place. The April 15 mass arrests were just one of many illegal acts by the police. Others included the raid on the convergence center and of people's homes and vehicles, as well as other acts of police misconduct and brutality.
We understand that the legal team in Washington DC that functioned so wonderfully on behalf of the demonstrators is also pondering a legal action. We called their office in DC but they are naturally preoccupied with securing the release of still imprisoned demonstrators.
We will be answering people's specific questions in the next few days and getting back to everyone with more details after we meet with lawyers.
What we need from everyone is their complete contact information and either a brief or a detailed description of their arrest. We are working on putting a message board on our web site so that people can share their experiences.
Also, if you haven't already, please phone and fax the DC mayor, court and police to demand the immediate release of those still in jail. Click here for numbers.
We hope to stay in touch with everyone and continue to work together as we build a mass people's movement.
In solidarity, Brian Becker and Sarah Sloan for the International Action Center
