The US had plans to bomb Iraq tonight. 11/14/98
Dear Friends,
Clinton will not be going to Asia.
The US adminstration has rejected the Iraqi government's letter, a letter which was immediately accepted by Kofi Anan and which was regarded as an unconditional acceptance of UNSCOM inspectors
The US had plans to bomb Iraq tonight.
When asked what the Iraqi government can do to alleviate the bombing, Sandy Berger refused to answer.
Clearly -- the US is not interested in diplomacy, and the US adminstration only understands violence and force. More Iraqi children will die.
SPEAK OUT! PROTEST!!

US EAGER TO BOMB! US POLICY -- "Kill more Iraqis!"
IRAQ SAYS UN WEAPON INSPECTIONS CAN RESUME WORK IMMEDIATELY AND WITHOUT CONDITIONS. US SAYS "UNACCEPTABLE."
In a move so outrageous even the US conservative media was shocked, the US administration stated that the Iraqi letter of compromise is 'unacceptable.' Iraq had submitted a letter to Kofi Anan which stated that UN Weapons Inspections can resume work immediately and unconditionally. Kofi Anan responded favorably to the letter, as did the Russians and French and Chinese. However, while the Security Council meeting was in session, US National Security Advisor Sandy Berger stated that US has rejected the letter. Berger refused to state what the Iraqi government would need to do to prevent US bombing of Iraqi cities. "Unconditional" was not good enough for the US administration. The US had been planning on bombing Iraq this evening (Saturday); they may bomb anytime, especially now that Clinton will not be going to Asia.
If the US was planning to bomb Iraqi cities in order to obtain 'compliance' and in order to have the UNSCOM inspectors return to work, then the Iraqi government has acquiesced. Why then the urge to bomb, and kill more innocent lives?
If the US is so concerned about 'weapons of mass destruction,' how can it justify the killing of 250 people every day in Iraq from the sanctions themselves? Aren't the sanctions then a weapon of mass destruction?
What is the US policy? It is the US that is preventing UNSCOM inspectors from returning to work. It is the US that is not satisfied with the killing of 250 people daily in Iraq because of the sanctions; more Iraqis must die. It is undeniable - and never clearer - that the US is rejecting any negotiations or any diplomacy; the US administration seems to only recognize military violence and economic violence. The US has become the "rogue" nation.
We, the peace community, are ashamed at the stance our government has taken. We are ashamed that our Secretary of State Madeline Albright believes that the death of a half a million Iraqi toddlers and infants is "worth it." There can be no goal which could morally justify the killing of innocent lives -- especially children! And, with US bombing of Iraqi cities imminent, more Iraqi children will be killed, and more innocent lives taken. Because we believe in the sanctity of human life, we reject the 8-year sanctions war on the 22 million people of Iraq, and we reject the US threats at bombing and further destroying Iraq.
