Los Angeles, CA --> Friday, Dec. 18, 4:30 pm, Westwood Federal Blvd, Wilshire Blvd. and Veteran Ave.
LOS ANGELES, CA -->On Thursday around 500 people gathered in front of the Westwood Federal Building to protest the military strikes against the people of Iraq, and to call for an end to the sanctions. Ongoing peace demonstrations at the Federal Building are scheduled for the duration of the bombings. The demonstration on Thursday was held along Wilshire Blvd, which is a broad street with extremely heavy traffic. Tens of thousands of motorists saw the spirited demonstration with it's anti-war banners and placards. Many motorists honked their car horns in approval. The demonstration also received brief television coverage on most of the local news channels. The crowd at the rally was racially diverse, young and old, Jews, Muslims, Christians... a cross section of the community. Most felt betrayed and outraged at the behavior of the "Liberal" Democratic President's orders to attack Iraq... this sentiment was best summed up by a protestors placard which read... "I opposed impeachment... until he launched the war." Other placards of note; "When does a President's "skirt problem" become a bombing campaign?" "Stop the Monica Missiles" "We're the thugs of the world" "Smart Bombs, Stupid Leaders"

Tampa Florida à On Dec 8 William Cohen is scheduled to speak at a national chambers of commerce mtg in Tampa Florida. Tampa is also home to the Macdill Afb, command and control center...the people who keep the bombs falling on iraq. there was no specific mention of Cohen including a visit to the Macdill afb while he is in the area; however, I would second guess that he will be there. Some of us who vigil every week in front of the main entrance of Macdill, protesting the ongoing US war against Iraq plan to vigil outside the luncheon where Cohen will be speaking. We think he deserves some of the same attention those of you at voices have been giving to Madeline Albright. The luncheon will be at the garrison seaport terminal #2 starting at 11:45am. please distribute this information through your network...if any activists from outside the Tampa area can come we would love to have them. PLEASE have them contact me before coming , preferably a day or two before Dec 8, in case there are changes in the scheduling. We are relying on news reports of the planned chamber of commerce event. This is a crucial time to bring our different groups together around this issue. Please encourage yourselves and others to make this the activist event you attend before the year ends. Many of us have gathered in the past around war issues and under a variety of peace groups and names. Lets gather again as a community in this National Day of Protest, in solidarity with the Iraqi people and also with those protesting across the world with us. The press came out in droves tonight for a vigil; lets rock our local media with messages of peace and bring politics to the street downtown. I look forward to seeing you Saturday night, love, Mel
Ramsey Clark, of the International Action Center stated, "A new bombing of Iraq will certainly kill hundreds and perhaps thousands of civilians. Just because Richard Butler, the chairperson of UNSCOM, contends that he is displeased with Iraq's compliance with UN inspectors, does not give the Clinton administration the rights to carry out a wanton act of mass murder ."

Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S --> December 18, 1998: Today in Honolulu, Hawaii a group of 50-60 demonstrators rallied together to protest the United States' most recent example of contempt for both the people of Iraq and democratic principles in general. Waving signs and burning the American flag before the Federal Building on Ala Moana Blvd protesters shouted Hawaiian chants and generally made their presence felt to commuters in an effort to bring to light the issue at hand. The Federal building is in a area of Honolulu where the FBI, CIA and other bodies of the industrial security complex of the Pacific are located.
Given the heavy military presence in Hawaii it was comforting to see and hear people giving the shaka (the 'hang loose' hand sign) and honking their automobile horns. There were the occasional disparaging remarks from rancorous military folks and others in support of the status quo but, for the most part, people were supportive of our action.
The protesting will continue in Hawaii with leafleting and other activities in Waikiki on Saturday night. In 1991 those protesting the Gulf War in Waikiki were surrounded and required a police escort for their personal safety after dozens of military folks attempted to violently hallenge their rights to free speech. Similar reactions are expected. Authour/s: Michael Sysiuk sysiuk@hawaii.edu Source: A-Infos News Service a-infos-d@tao.ca Style: First Person Account

He will also be active upon returning to speak out and write on what he witnesses. We need to raise $1,000 in the next few weeks. Can you HELP? Send checks to help Mark or for medicines for Iraq made out to INTERNATIONAL ACTION CENTER and send to 5920 Second Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202. The 11th Hour Peace Coalition condemns the military strikes against the people of Iraq.
Students at Skidmore College, where the organization is located, held an all night vigil on Thursday night to discuss possible alternatives to military action.
Members of the 11th Hour Peace Coalition are also on a hunger strike until the attacks against Iraq are over. The organization calls on supporters to join them in opposition to the bombings.
"We are calling on people of conscience to speak out against this immoral act in rallies, protests and vigils in their own communities," 11th Hour Peace Coalition member Eileen Schwartz said.
The organization suggests writing letters to Congress and the President urging them to immediately end the military strikes against Iraq and to support the lifting of the U.N. sanctions. Two million Iraqis have died in the last eight years because of U.N. sanctions. Supporters of the organization's efforts can also wear black ribbons of mourning and protest.
"This is another imposition of terror on a people who have suffered from poverty, disease and starvation for eight years," Minister of Programming Shawn McCormack said. "The U.S. is not enforcing peace. Peace cannot coexist with terror and blatant bully-like aggression. We can only work for peace in peace."
Members of the 11th Hour Peace Coalition call the act "unethical, unjustified and hypocritical." They urge others to join a "campaign of resistance."
The 11th Hour Peace Coalition draws on supporters from all over the United States and has been endorsed by numerous peace and social justice organizations. Dozens of groups and individuals throughout the upstate New York region are listed among the supporters.
"People of conviction," Schwartz said, "must stand up, speak out and act in defiance."

Join the Peace and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group on at PSU's Smith Center room 292/294 (SW Broadway at Montgomery) for a special event with three speakers focusing on "The 'Gulf War' Eight Years Later: Dismantling the U.S. Sanctions On Iraq." Two of the speakers are members of Voices in the Wilderness who travelled to Iraq in late 1997. IAG member Dan Handelman and the other members of his VitW delegation have been threatened with $10,000 fines by the Treasury Department for delivering medicine and toys to sick Iraqi children! Joe Zito, who travelled with Dan, will be down from Tacoma for the evening... Also featured will be Donna Denno, a pediatrician from Seattle whose family is from Iraq, who will speak about health care, women and children in Iraq.
January 16, 1999 marks exactly eight years since the start of the massive bombing campaign known as "Desert Storm," which probably killed 150,000 people. Since then, the most extreme sanctions in history have caused the deaths of over one million Iraqis.
In addition to updating you on the status of the Treasury Department case, these folks will bring you up to date on what's happening inside Iraq, what's the latest with the U.S. military actions and the U.N. weapons inspections, and things you can do to make a difference. Dan will show a re-edited version of what little footage he salvaged from his trip to Iraq, featuring quick camera shots of some of the toys mentioned by the Treasury Department's prepenalty notice. (The Customs Department has declined the first petition for the return of the rest of Dan's film and videotapes.)
Portland, OR --> Thursday Dec. 17, Federal building (SW 3rd and Jefferson), 4-6 PM.
About 300 protesters took to the streets in Portland, Oregon to protest the U.S. bombardment of Iraq on Thursday. The protest, which began at Portland's downtown Justice Center, was a variety of stunned, sad, angry, and vocal people of all ages whose main message--that violence is not an acceptable foreign policy--was greeted warmly by most of those who drove by.
At about 5:30 PM, police blocked off streets in the area, preventing the protesters from getting their message out. The police, some on horses and some in riot gear, had cleared the streets when about 20 people attempted to block traffic. About 200 people spontaneously took off, with an uninvited police escort, through the streets of downtown Portland. Eventually, 20 to 30 people, including several juveniles, were arrested, the majority after the police apparently gave a dispersal order. Police horses kicked and stepped on several people, and some arrests were made in a violent fashion, including one person who was picked up by his hair. Arrests targeted leaders, including a person who was acting as police liaison.
The Peace and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group, which organized the initial protest, put out literature pointing out the similarities between the United States/Bill Clinton and Iraq/Saddam Hussein. For instance, the government here makes a big point that Iraq "gassed its own people" in 1988, while Clinton's ATF gassed and burned to the ground the Branch Davidian compound in Waco in 1993. Similarly, the group pointed out, the U.S. Congress is spending millions of dollars trying to remove both Presidents from office.
Meanwhile, hundreds of cruise missiles continue to kill and maim hundreds of Iraqis, while 6000 or more Iraqi children die monthly due to U.S./U.N. sanctions.
The Iraq Affinity Group hopes that the general public takes a stance of "No business as usual" as long as our government continues to drop bombs. People should talk to their friends, neighbors, family and co-workers about the reality of U.S. policy. It is not "hurting Saddam Hussein," but killing innocent people in Iraq.
Thursday's protest followed a successful demonstration of about 125 on Wednesday, which came together about 2 hours after the initial bombing. About 40 people left that demonstration and crashed a "Don't Impeach Clinton" Rally, bringing the message that if he does get impeached, it should be for his crimes of bombing Sudan, Afghanistan and Iraq. The anti-war demonstrators were able to change the topic from lying about sex to the killing of children.

Koontz, also a member of the MCC Peace Committee, added, "I especially want to do what I can to communicate that not all American Christians support bombings and widespread sanctions."

Philadelphia, PA -->The Iraq Coalition is calling for a demonstration at the Philadelphia Inquirer this Wednesday, Jan 20, at 4:30 - 6 pm, 400 N. Broad St. A January 12 Inquirer Editorial not only criticized those who oppose sanctions, but called for the ouster of Saddam Hussein. It also found nothing offensive about the U.S. using UNSCOM to spy on Baghdad. The Inquirer coverage of Iraq has been particularly anti-Arab, and pro-Pentagon , over the last ten years. The fact that over 1.5 million Iraqis, mostly children and elders, have died because of sanctions does not seem to bother the Inquirer Editorial Board. We urge everyone to come out and show your displeasure with the Inquirer, whose positions reveal it to be not much more than a front for the oil and other corporations that stand to profit from the U.S. aggression in the Middle East. Bring signs, chants, and your imagination. STOP THE BOMBINGS. END SANCTIONS. http://leb.net/IAC/

Madison, WI --> Thursday December 17, 4:30 pm, Rally at UW Library Mall Sponsored by US Out Now.
Report from Four Lakes Madison, Wisconsin: Over 400 Madisonians took to the streets today to protest the bombing of Iraq by the Pentagon. Some 300 initially gathered at the UW-Madison Library Mall for a brief rally, and then marched up State Street to the State Capitol Building chanting "Exxon, Chevron, Texaco, Corporate Wars Have Got to Go!" and "What do we want? U.S. Out of the Persian Gulf!". As the march progressed it swelled in size, until a crowd of over 400 arrived outside the locked and guarded doors of our Capitol. A rally swung into motion, as speaker after speaker criticized the use of U.S. and British military forces to attack Iraq, and pointed out ways in which Madisonians could stop the war locally.
The protest was organized by U.S. Out Now!, a local coalition of peace, labor, environmental, education, socialist, civil rights, social justice, and other organizations. The protest was attended by many people from throughout the Madison community, and was heavily bolstered by a large student presence. The UW-Madison is a major investor in war and minerals corporations, and also conducts research for the U.S. military as well as for weapons manufacturers and oil corporations, all of which are involved in the attacks on Iraq. Furthermore, the UW maintains its ties, in violation of state anti-discrimination law, with R.O.T.C.
The police did not make any arrests at this particular demonstration. The case of Ken McGrew, a UW-Madison graduate student arrested in an anti-war protest organized U.S. Out Now! last winter, is still at issue, and will be the subject of an article in the local newspaper "Isthmus" next week.
Before dispersing, the crowd agreed by a voice vote to regroup each and every day that the U.S. bombing of Iraq continues, at 5pm, at the State Street entrance to the State Capitol Building. - Ben Manski brmanski@students.wisc.edu
