THE IAC URGES YOU TO SUPPORT VICTOR TORO’S CASE

Who is Victor Toro?

Victor Toro a Chilean National and co-founder of the MIR (Revolutionary Left Movement), who was disappeared then tortured by the U.S.-sponsored bloody fascist dictator Pinochet in 1973. After being released from a concentration camp prison in 1976, he was forced to leave his homeland and was given an exit only passport. In 1978, the illegitimate undemocratic government of Pinochet declared him dead and was published in the press, which until this day, this wrong has not been corrected even though many attempts by the Toro family.

He arrived in the U.S. in 1984 without U.S.-documents and settled in the South Bronx, NY. In 1987 he co-founded La Peña del Bronx with his life partner and partner in struggle for social justice, Nieves Ayress, a community grass roots organization serving the poor and the needs of the community.

Victor’s Case

On July 6, 2007 while on a passenger train Victor Toro was arrested and detained by the Border Patrol (ICE) in Rochester , NY . Because, his supporters mobilized quickly, within 72 hours we had successfully set a $5,000 bond to win his conditional freedom.

Carlos Moreno, legal council, and the defense committee was able to change the venue from Rochester to NYC. The Defense Committee holds informational pickets in front of 26 Federal Plaza every Friday between 12 noon and 1PM. The Victor Toro Defense Committee is demanding from the Department of Homeland Security that Victor be granted Political Asylum. On January 18, 2008 is Victor's next court appearance come out and show your support.

Victor, Nieves and their family are victims again of the unjust policies of the U.S. government, first through the CIA authored "Operation Condor" culminating in a "golpe de estado" against a democratically elected President Allende and secondly, the persecution of immigrant workers who have been forced off of their lands by NAFTA, CAFTA and other free trade agreements and migrate north just for to find sustenance but are met with an anti-immigrant administration that supports the racist paramilitary group the MINUTEMEN, the raids and racial profiling.
