When Lies Reign Get the Truth at Leftbooks
The U.S. corporate media is now busy rehashing U.S. State Department-fabricated lies against Slobodan Milosevic in the same vein as "weapons of mass destruction" lies were used to justify the invasion of Iraq. Now these excuses are being used to justify the negligent homicide and possible murder of Milosevic and help legitimize the International Criminal Tribunal on the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
The UN Security Council established the ICTY in 1993, at the insistence of Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Its role from the beginning was restricted to prosecuting people from the Yugoslav Federation. The ICTY rejected attempts by a group of international attorneys to bring war-crimes charges against the United States for 78 days of bombing primarily civilian targets in Yugoslavia, including schools, bridges, markets and radio and television stations.
Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark has often described the ICTY's establishment as "an explicit violation of the UN Charter and a political court used as an instrument of war against the Yugoslav peoples."
Despite having no permanent staff and relatively little legal assistance to respond to 500,000 pages of prosecution documents, Milosevic politically countered every charge against him while discrediting the prosecution witnesses. During the defense part of the proceedings, he was able to present a damning case against the U.S. and NATO. Though the NATO powers first announced the Milosevic case as the "trial of the century" and planned a show trial, when Milosevic successfully turned the table on the prosecution and counter-charged NATO with war crimes, almost all media coverage ended.
In two major statements, answering the charges against him in the summer of 2001 and in 2004 at the opening of his defense, Milosevic made the historical record. The 2001 statement is published in the 2002 book, "Hidden Agenda - The U.S./NATO Takeover of Yugoslavia," and his 2004 statement in the book, "The Defense Speaks - For History and the Future." Both books are published by the IAC and available at http://www.leftbooks.com
This book is a vital antidote to the dehumanizing calumny heaped on the defenders of Yugoslavia. Many misled people would benefit greatly if they gave some respectful attention to the side that tried to avoid war and save a multi-ethnic social democracy - Michael ParentiThe Defense Speaks for History and the Future Opening Defense Statement at the Hague by President of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milosevic With an introduction by Ramsey Clark

In Iraq, the whole world now knows, the charge of weapons of mass destruction - WMD - was a fraud and war propaganda. How many people know that the 78-day bombing of all of Yugoslavia, based on the charge of 'mass graves' in Kosovo, was also a fraud and war propaganda - a weapon of mass deception- to justify the U.S. military and corporate takeover of the entire region. HIDDEN AGENDA: U.S./NATO Takeover of Yugoslavia by Ramsey Clark and Various Authors http://www.leftbooks.com/
Confused about why the U.S. bombed Yugoslavia? That's because you never heard about the hidden agenda the dismemberment of this multiethnic country.
Washington and NATO strategists invoked humanitarian principles to justify their war. But they practiced the divide-and-conquer tactics used by empires since the days of Imperial Rome.
Behind the facade of concern for self-determination, they sliced away most of the republics of Yugoslavia, one by one, through economic pressure, political threats and, finally, outright warfare.
This book presents evidence gathered by dozens of nongovernmental hearings in 1999 and 2000 that NATO countries engaged in a decade-long conspiracy to foment war in Yugoslavia in order to split it up.
Now NATO has military bases all over the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. They are the Roman legions for Western transnational corporations and Big Oil.
In the 40+ essays presented here, leading anti-war activists and analysts from many countries take up the Hague Tribunal, the occupation of Kosovo, media lies, war crimes and the blatant illegality of NATO aggression. Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark writes on "Blaming the victim." Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, demonized in the Western press, stands up to the NATO tribunal based in the Hague.

Other U.S. War Crimes:
Chile: The Other September 11 An Anthology of Reflections on the 1973 coup Certain Days: Freedom for Political Prisoners http://www.leftbooks.com/ "Most people associate September 11 with the World Trade Center tragedy. But before 2001, September 11 was already a day of infamy for Latin America and Chile in particular. On that day in 1973, General Augusto Pinochet led a U.S.-backed coup against the popularly elected government of Salvador Allende, and began his repressive 17-year dictatorship. An interesting and nostalgic collection."--Criticas/
With reflections on another day of terror and tragedy, this anthology includes Ariel Dorfman's poignant essay, "The Last September 11," poetry by Pablo Neruda, the song composed by Víctor Jara just before his brutal murder, and President Allende's final radio broadcast to the nation, along with resonant speeches by Fidel Castro and Allende's daughter, Beatriz. Speaking of Political Poetry:
Poetry Like Bread Poets of the Political Imagination Edited by Martín Espada
From the Foreward by Martín Espada/ //In his landmark essay, "In Defense of the Word," Eduardo Galeano writes: "We are what we do, especially what we do to change what we are...A literature born in the process of crisis and change, and deeply immersed in the risks and events of its time, can indeed help to create the symbols of the new reality, and perhaps--if talent and courage are not lacking--throw light on the signs along the road...To claim that literature on its own is going to change reality would be an act of madness or arrogance. It seems to me no less foolish to deny that it can aid in making this change." This anthology is founded on such convictions.
What else but defiant, extravagant hope--political imagination--could motivate Roque Dalton, a man who suffered imprisonment and ultimately assassination, to write the words that give this anthology its title: "I believe the world is beautiful/and that poetry, like bread, is for everyone."

(/Parental Advisory!/ Very inspiring - may cause reduced TV viewing) Crossing Bok Chitto A Choctaw Tale of Friendship and Freedom By Tim Tingle Illustrated by Jeanne Rorex Bridges
This is a beautiful children's/everyone's book about solidarity.
There is a river called Bok Chitto that cuts through Mississippi. In the days before the War Between the States, in the days before the Trail of Tears, Bok Chitto was a boundary, on one side of the river lived the Choctaws, a nation of Indian people. On the other side lived the plantation owners and their slaves. If a slave escaped and made his/her way across Bok Chitto, the slave was free. The slave owner could not follow. That was the law.
Martha Tom, a young Choctaw girl, knows better than to cross the river, but one day--in search of blackberries--she disobeys her mother and finds herself on the other side. Thus begins the story about seven slaves who cross the big river to freedom, led by a Choctaw angel walking on water! -Hardcover
