IMMIGRANT WORKERS AND UNION WORKERS TO UNITE IN MASSIVE NYC MAY DAY
DEMONSTRATIONS
Leaders From Immigrant Workers Organizations and Unions Will Announce May
Day Plans Tomorrow at City Hall Press Conference
Tuesday, April 26, Noon
Steps of City Hall
Tomorrow on the steps of City Hall, leaders from the city’s major
unions and immigrants’ rights groups will announce joint plans for major
May Day demonstrations, in which thousands will march for workers’
rights.
Press Conference Speakers:
Chris Silvera, Secretary-Treasurer, Teamsters Local 808
Sonia Ivany, President, NYC Labor Council for Latin American Advancement,
LCLAA
Teresa Gutierrez, Co-Chair, May 1 Coalition
Kevin Lynch, Co-Chair, Labor Rights, Immigrant Rights, Jobs for All
Coalition
The decision to hold joint activities on May Day comes amidst a national
reawakening of the labor movement in the wake of massive pro-union
demonstrations in Wisconsin.
In New York City that movement is now joining forces with the immigrant
workers’ rights movement, which rose up in 2006 against the
anti-immigrant Sensenbrenner-King bill and brought out hundreds of thousands of
protesters on May 1 that year.
