The United States's goal to control the region for the benefit of its corporations has no boundaries, whether posing as an aiding partner as in Haiti, or through the imposition of an illegitimate government as in Honduras; through 'diplomacy' or through blatant military force.

These countries, two of the poorest in the hemisphere and under different circumstances, have shown the callousness and criminal arrogance of the imperialist north, whose aim in both is the same: to keep them underdeveloped, to steal their resources and labor and to use them as a ghostly example of USA's might against the progressive developments in Latin America and the Caribbean where massive movements of Indigenous, Afro descendants, peasants and workers have led to governments that work on behalf of the people, not for the benefit of USA's transnational corporations.

In Haiti, after the terrible earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people, left thousands injured and millions homeless, the United States has mounted, not a humanitarian operation, but a massive military one involving 20,000 troops heavily armed, reconnaissance drones, destroyers and the Aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson with Sidewinder missiles and helicopters. It made the government of Haiti sign a "memorandum of understanding" giving the USA total control of who gets in or out of the country through the Port-au-Prince airport.

Since then, U.S. marines control the main airports and have blocked the landing of aid from the Caribbean Community, France, World Food Program and Doctors Without Borders. Unloading military gear and "securing the perimeter" was the Pentagon's priority, not the aiding of Haitians who desperately needed the supplies carried on those planes. Defense Secretary Gates stated that the U.S. "wouldn't send in food and water because, there was no 'structure...to provide security;" this, even though it has been reported at length the restraint and the solidarity among them shown by the desperate Haitian masses.

A large refugee camp at Champs de Mars reported "no relief has arrived; it is all being delivered on other side of town, by the U.S. Embassy." Washington Post reported U.S. rescue operations focused on places frequented by foreigners, such as U.N. headquarters, Montana Hotel and Caribe supermarket.

In contrast, immediately after the quake, Cuba, Venezuela , Iceland and China moved to provide relief right away to the Haitian people without waiting for "security."

In Honduras , the U.S. engineered and supported a military coup where Honduran army, trained by the U.S. , removed at gunpoint its legitimate President, Manuel Zelaya on June 28, 2009 and installed a criminal government with Roberto Micheletti as the de facto president. The purpose was to prevent the people of Honduras from deciding their own destiny through the convening of a Constitutional Assembly that would put people first instead of the obsolete current Constitution which was drafted in the 80's on behalf of U.S. corporations. At that time Honduras was being used as a U.S. military base against the people of El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua and the constitution was aimed to establish Honduras as a U.S. neocolony where all its the resources would be privatized, transferring in that way the wealth of the country to U.S. hands.

Now the people, impoverished by this U.S. maneuver, want to regain their country and their resources. President Zelaya had paid attention to the masses' demands and had initiated the process to consult the people on this issue. He also developed programs that helped the poorest in the country, established free school lunches and increased the minimum wage by 60%. For this reasons, the wealthy and the businesses in Honduras joined with the U.S. and its hundreds of corporations operating there to get rid of Zelaya and establish a government that would be more responsive to the rich and the corporations both from Honduras and the U.S.

On November 29, with a very low turnout of voters, less than 50%, Porfirio Lobo of the right wing National Party was elected president. The people, who since June 28 have organized themselves under the massive Popular National Front of Resistance to the Coup, do not recognize these elections since they were held under an illegitimate government which has assassinated more than 140 people since the coup, injured, persecuted, harassed, detained and arrested thousands, continue to threaten the leaders of the Resistance, has committed countless human rights violations with the help of the U.S. and paramilitary death squads from Colombia, besides violating the freedom of speech by closing down television and radio stations that reported the truth of the events.

On Wednesday, January 27, Lobo will be inaugurated president of Honduras , but he is not recognized by the majority of the people in Honduras nor most of the international community. Most of the countries around the world had rejected the June coup and had cut all relations with Honduras as long as there was a de facto government product of the coup and President Zelaya was not restituted to office. Except the U.S. , who has worked overtime to have his allies accept the de facto government. Now it wants the international community to recognize Lobo and reestablish relations as if nothing has happened.

This is no different from the actions of the U.S. against Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide who 6 years ago was overthrown by the USA after it invaded that country, replacing it with a brutal coup regime.

Join in solidarity with the tens of thousands of people who will be marching in Honduras on January 27 demanding the No Recognition of the new government of Porfirio Lobo, No Amnesty to the Criminal coup plotters and the right of the people to a Constitutional Assembly.

De Haití a Honduras: No a la intervención de Estados Unidos

La meta de Estados Unidos de controlar la región para beneficio de sus empresas no tiene límites, ya sea haciéndose pasar por un socio que lleva ayuda humanitaria como en Haití, o a través de la imposición de un gobierno ilegítimo como en Honduras; a través de la 'diplomacia' o a través de la fuerza militar flagrante.

Estos países, dos de los más pobres en el hemisferio y en circunstancias diferentes, han mostrado la insensibilidad y la arrogancia criminal del Norte imperialista, cuyo objetivo en ambos es el mismo: mantenerlos subdesarrollados, robar sus recursos y mano de obra y utilizarlos como un ejemplo fantasmal de lo que el poderío de Estados Unidos podría hacer en contra de los desarrollos progresistas en América Latina y el Caribe donde movimientos masivos de indígenas, afro descendientes, campesinos y trabajadores han logrado gobiernos que trabajan en beneficio del pueblo, no de las empresas transnacionales de Estados Unidos.

En Haití, tras el terrible terremoto que cobró la vida de más de 100.000 personas, dejó a miles heridos y millones sin hogar, Estados Unidos ha montado, no una operación humanitaria, sino un masivo despliegue militar con 20.000 soldados fuertemente armados, aviones de reconocimiento, destructores y el portaaviones USS Carl Vinson con misiles Sidewinder y helicópteros. Hizo firmar al gobierno de Haití un "memorando de entendimiento" dando a los Estados Unidos total control de quién entra o sale del país por el aeropuerto de Port-au-Prince.

Desde entonces, los infantes de Marina de EEUU controlan los principales aeropuertos y han bloqueado el desembarco de ayuda humanitaria de los países del CARICOM, Francia, del Programa Mundial de Alimentos, y de Médicos Sin Fronteras. La descarga de equipos militares y el "asegurar el perímetro" eran la prioridad del Pentágono, no la ayuda a los/as haitianos/as que necesitan desesperadamente los suministros a bordo de los aviones. El Secretario de Defensa Gates afirmó que Estados Unidos "no enviaría alimentos y agua porque no había una "estructura... para proporcionar seguridad"; esto aunque ampliamente se ha reportado la moderación y la solidaridad entre el desesperado pueblo haitiano.

Desde un extenso campamento de refugiados en Champs de Mars se informó que "no ha llegado ayuda; todos se entrega en el otro lado de la ciudad, por la Embajada de Estados Unidos". El Washington Post informó que las operaciones de rescate de EEUU. se centraron en los lugares frecuentados por extranjeros, tales como la sede de la ONU, el Hotel Montana y el supermercado Caribe.

Por el contrario, inmediatamente después del terremoto, Cuba, Venezuela, Islandia y China dispusieron proporcionar alivio inmediato al pueblo haitiano sin esperar por ninguna "seguridad".

En Honduras, Estados Unidos tramó y apoyó un golpe de estado militar donde el ejército hondureño, entrenado por los Estados Unidos, removió a punta de pistola al legítimo Presidente Manuel Zelaya, el 28 de junio de 2009 e instaló un gobierno criminal con Roberto Micheletti como el Presidente de facto. El propósito era impedir que el pueblo de Honduras decidiera su propio destino a través de la convocatoria de una Asamblea Constitucional que pondría al pueblo primero en lugar de la actual Constitución obsoleta que se redactó en los años 80 a nombre de las empresas estadounidenses. En ese momento Honduras estaba siendo usada como una base militar de EEUU contra el pueblo del Salvador, Guatemala y Nicaragua y la Constitución pretendía establecer a Honduras como una neocolonia estadounidense donde todos sus recursos serían privatizados, transfiriendo de esa manera la riqueza del país a EEUU.

Ahora el pueblo, empobrecido por esta maniobra de EEUU, quiere recuperar su país y sus recursos. El Presidente Zelaya había prestado atención a las demandas de las masas y había iniciado el proceso para consultar al pueblo sobre esta cuestión. También había desarrollado programas que ayudaban a los más pobres del país, estableció almuerzos escolares gratis y aumentó el salario mínimo en un 60 %. Por estas razones, los ricos y las empresas en Honduras se unieron a los Estados Unidos y sus cientos de empresas que operan allí para deshacerse de Zelaya y establecer un gobierno que obedezca a los ricos y a las empresas tanto de Honduras como de los Estados Unidos.

El 29 de noviembre, con una bajísima participación de votantes, menos del 50 %, Porfirio Lobo del derechista Partido Nacional, fue elegido Presidente. El pueblo, que desde el 28 de junio se ha organizado bajo el masivo Frente Nacional de Resistencia Popular Contra el Golpe, no reconoce estas elecciones que se convocaron bajo un gobierno ilegítimo que ha asesinado a más de 140 personas desde el golpe de estado; que ha herido, perseguido, acosado, detenido y arrestado a miles, que continúa amenazando a los/as líderes de la Resistencia, que ha cometido innumerables violaciones a los derechos humanos con la ayuda de los Estados Unidos y de los paramilitares de Colombia, además de violar la libertad de expresión al cerrar las estaciones de radio y televisión que informaban sobre la verdad de los hechos.

El miércoles 27 de enero, Lobo será inaugurado Presidente de Honduras, pero no es reconocido por la mayoría del pueblo de Honduras ni por la mayoría de la comunidad internacional. La mayoría de los países del mundo había rechazado el golpe de estado de junio y había cortado todas las relaciones con Honduras mientras hubiera un gobierno de facto producto del golpe y que el Presidente Zelaya no se hubiera restituido. Excepto Estados Unidos, que ha trabajado incansablemente para que sus aliados acepten el gobierno de facto. Ahora quiere que la comunidad internacional reconozca a Lobo y restablezca las relaciones como si nada hubiera ocurrido.

Esto no difiere de las acciones de los Estados Unidos contra el presidente haitiano Jean-Bertrand Aristide que hace 6 años fue derrocado por los Estados Unidos luego de invadir ese país, reemplazándolo por un régimen brutal golpista.

Únase en solidaridad con las decenas de miles de personas que marcharán en Honduras el 27 de enero exigiendo el no reconocimiento del nuevo gobierno de Porfirio Lobo, No a la amnistía a los conspiradores del criminal golpe de estado y por el derecho del pueblo a una Asamblea Constitucional.
