OCCUPY Wall Street SOUTH! NYC Planning meeting for action at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte
Tues ►JUNE 5 @ 8
p.m.
Judson Memorial Church 55 Washington Square South,
Manhattan
(Discussion will be in the balcony in the Meeting Room)
The Democratic National Convention is being held in Charlotte, North
Carolina during the first week in September. Charlotte has become
known as the "Wall Street of the South" because it
is home of Bank of America's world headquarters; Wells Fargo's
eastern regional headquarters; all kinds of other dirty corporations
and banks, and has the second largest concentration of finance capital behind
NYC. North Carolina is also the least unionized state in the
country. It's one of only two states in the U.S. where it
is illegal for public sector workers to collectively bargain — a
law that was put on the books during the Jim Crow era.
Just a few weeks ago, more than 1,000 people mobilized to Charlotte from
different parts of the country for a demonstration at the BofA
shareholders meeting on May 9. In many ways, this was the kick-off to
the buildup throughout the summer leading up to the demonstrations during the
DNC in September.
Many different Occupies and other organizations from throughout the South and
the country have come together to form the Coalition to March on Wall
Street South to coordinate actions during the DNC that
challenge the banks and to continue to expose both the Democrats and
Republicans as parties that serve the interests of the 1%.
We'll be joined by organizers from North Carolina who will be
updating us on what's in the works so far for during the DNC; how
folks can get plugged into that planning; and starting discussions around
actions and events we wanna make happen in Charlotte!
