Holding a shovel, he told the crowd that they were going to make history. He promised to "bury the FTAA," and swore, "we will not be a North American colony." Bring your toy shovels to Town Hall Tuesday night to demonstrate your solidarity with the people of Venezuela and across the globe who are struggling against U.S. global domination.

This evening of solidarity follows days of protest on the streets of Argentina against U.S. and Bush administration policies. It is clear that what is happening on the streets of Mar del Plata is a justifiable expression of outrage over years of U.S. intervention in Latin America. U.S. neoliberal policies have reduced entire segments of the population of the region to abject poverty. Add to that the ongoing war on Iraq and U.S. hostility towards Venezuela, it is understandable why there is such opposition to Bush's visit.

If you wanted to identify the one person most responsible for violence, you would have to point the finger at George W. Bush. It is Bush Administration policies that have enraged the whole world--anywhere on the globe that he visits sees massive protests. It is the Bush Administration that backed the failed coup against President Hugo Chavez, and has announced contingency plans for military action against Venezuela. It was Bush ally Pat Robertson who called for the murder of Chavez. Join us at the Town Hall forum on Tuesday night to expose the role of the U.S. and the Bush Administration as the real sources of violence on a global scale, and to demonstrate that there is a broad and large movement in the U.S. not only willing to stand with Venezuela but to mobilize in opposition to U.S. aggression against that country. We must organize to prevent further U.S. interference.

Members of Congress, representatives of the government of Venezuela, international solidarity activists, journalists, and labor leaders will present an Evening in Solidarity with Bolivarian Venezuela which will include: presentations by official representatives of the Venezuelan government that will highlight the goals and achievements of the Bolivarian Revolution; a discussion of ongoing U.S. hostility towards Venezuela; an examination of the impact of globalization and the proposed FTAA; and examination of U.S. interference in the internal politics of Venezuela; as well as international cultural performances.

SOLIDARITY WITH BOLIVARIAN VENEZUELA

Now, more than ever, the people of Venezuela and their leaders need our solidarity.

Rev. Pat Robertson's recent call for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frías is evidence that solidarity with Venezuela is urgent.

What makes Robertson's statement so dangerous is that it is a result of the hostile climate emanating from the White House. He joins a long list of Bush administration officials who are all working to lay the groundwork for U.S. intervention in Venezuela, militarily or otherwise, by distorting and defaming the reality in Venezuela.

Ahora más que nunca, el pueblo venezolano y sus líderes necesitan de nuestra solidaridad.

Las recientes declaraciones del evangelista Pat Robertson haciendo un llamado para el asesinato del presidente venezolano Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, pone en evidencia la urgencia de la solidaridad con Venezuela.

Lo que hace muy peligrosa esa declaración de Robertson, es que es producto del clima hostil que emana de la Casa Blanca. Robertson se une a una larga lista de oficiales de la administración de Bush quienes al distorsionar y difamar la realidad venezolana, están trabajando para sentar las bases para una intervención de los EEUU en Venezuela, ya sea militar o de cualquier otra forma.

On Tuesday, November 8, at 6:30 pm, members of Congress, local officials, clergy, labor organizers, artists, and international solidarity activists will present an Evening in Solidarity with Bolivarian Venezuela in New York City’s historic Town Hall. The evening’s program will highlight the goals and achievements of the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela and the ongoing U.S. hostility and threats against the Chávez Administration.

The people of Venezuela and their democratically-elected President Hugo Chávez have come under increasing attacks from the Bush Administration and its allies, including Bush Administration support for a failed April 2002 coup and repeated threats and insults from high-ranking U.S. officials -- including Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and CIA Director Porter Goss. Pat Robertson, a close friend of the Bush Administration, has openly called for the assassination of President Chávez. Chávez says that he has been forced to cancel numerous public appearances out of fear of U.S.-backed assassination attempts.

This hostility towards the democratically-elected government of Venezuela is rooted in the Chávez Administration’s determination to use revenue from its ample oil reserves to provide health care, education, housing, and other necessities for the nation’s poor. Chávez has also vocally opposed the U.S.-inititated Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).

Despite this hostility from the Bush Administration, the government of Venezuela has offered to send more than $1 million in aid, as well as medical teams and other relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, an offer that Washington called “counter-productive.” Chávez has also offered to sell Venezuelan heating oil directly to poor people in the U.S. at 40% below market price.

“Our goal is to cease tensions between the U.S. government and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,” said Teresa Gutierrez, one of the organizers of the event. “We will present, before a crowd of hundreds, the truth about the advances being made by the government in Venezuela in areas like health care and education, now that they are using the resources of the country to help their own people. We will also demand that the Bush Administration respect international law and the sovereign rights of the Venezuelan people.”

“The people of Venezuela have been anxiously waiting for an event like this to demonstrate that they have friends in the U.S.,” said William Camacaro, of the Alberto Lovera Bolivarian Circle.
