On Tuesday, October 8, 2002, the newly formed Committee in Solidarity with the People of Venezuela will hold a press conference to announce the formation of this solidarity organization that aims to organize a movement in support of the people of Venezuela.
Speakers will address concern for the continued threat of a right wing grouping in Venezuela that wants to oust the democratically elected president of Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez. In April, this right-wing, pro-rich sector attempted to carry out a coup to overturn President Chavez’s administration. The U.S. government immediately welcomed this development and blamed the President.
Tens of thousands of Venezuelans, however, poured out into the streets of Caracas to demand Chavez’ return and were victorious.
Today, these forces continue to mobilize to create a difficult and tenuous situation for the Chavez administration. The anti-Chavez forces have called for a general strike on Thursday, October 10 in order to create an unstable situation throughout the country. The right-wing forces aim to destabilize the country economically as part of their efforts to oust President Chavez.
For decades, the people of Venezuela have faced dire economic and social conditions. The Chavez administration is carrying out social reforms to alleviate these conditions. As a result, the indigenous, peasant, and working people of Venezuela have wholeheartedly embraced his administration.
