360 Washington St Brookline (across the street from the Brookline Public Library)Defense Meeting for Amer and Palestine Solidarity Meeting at IAC office MONDAY JUNE 18 6:30 PM
On Sunday June 10 a coalition of organizations conducted a demonstration from 11:30 to 2pm in Coolidge Corner to protest a celebration by Zionist groups of 53 years of "Isreali Independence". The demonstration, with spirited chanting and signs and with leaflets distributed to all passers by, demanded an end to the occupation of Palestine and U.S. funding of Israel, supported the Intifada and the Right of Return for Palestinians. The crowd of over 100 included Arabs and Jews, African Americans, Muslims from several community Mosques, young and old, unionists, human rights activists fighting oppression around the world including in Colombia and Latin America and Africa. Many passersby thoughtfully received the information and flyers that were passed out. But there was also a continuous police presence and Zionist harassment. The demonstration was originally scheduled to be held on the same side of the street as the Zionist event, but the Brookline Police claimed that the Zionists had an "exclusive use" permit and relegated the pro-Palestine demonstration to a spot across the street, and furthermore denied the pro-Palestine demonstration the right to use any sound equipment including bullhorns. Police stationed a police wagon directly next to the demonstration for the duration, and had multiple surveilance video cameras going continuously.
At around 2 pm a group of police came up to Amer who was leading chants and pulled him to the side and arrested him. Amer had been negotiating with the cops all day, complying with their requests for the demonstration to be across the street, to not block foot traffic and to not utilize any bullhorns. There was no justfication or cause for his arrest. Police officers on the scene refused to divulge the charges or the reason for the arrest. Funds were collected for bail and a delegation went to the Police Station and a lawyer was secured and consulted. The Police indicated that Amer was being held overnight without bail and would be in Brookline Court, first session for araignment 9 am Monday morning. Supporters came to Brookline Court, but the cops had taken Amer to Taunton Court instead. He now will be arraigned Tuesday morning June 12 at 9 am in Brookline Court, and his first pretrial hearing will be on Monday, June 18 at 9 am. Supporters are needed in court on both days. We now know that Amer is facing trumped up frameup charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. We are organizing a campaign to demand the frame-up charges be dropped. Call everyone you know - ALL OUT on Tuesday the 12th and Monday the 18th in Brookline Court!
On Monday night June 18 at 6:30 at the International Action Center Office at 284 Amory St in Jamaica Plain, the weekly meeting of Palestine Solidarity Groups will occur. Defending Amer will again be the central point of the agenda. All groups and individuals interested in working on Amer's defense are urged to participate and be represented. The IAC office is near the StonyBrook station on the Orange Line. As you get out of the train go left, and Amory Street is your first right. Go about 2 blocks to 284 - "The Brewery". You will see an asphalt parking lot. The entrance to the IAC is the red door at the back left corner of the parking lot.
