Musical Tribute to Palestine by Puerto Rican Liberation activist Marta Rodriquez
Israel has maintained its occupation for more than half a century, devastating the Palestinian people. The state of Israel was founded by acts of terror against Palestinian villages (Deir Yassin and more than 400 others) and by the institution of citizenship and land rights based on race (the "law of return"). We say yes to the Jewish people, but no to the Zionist ideology that guides the brutal oppression of the Palestinians. It is no less a racist ideology than is anti-semitism.
Israeli "independence" is no cause for celebration. It has meant misery and deprivation for the indigenous Palestinians whose land was stolen to create the Israeli state. Five million Palestinians (60% of all Palestinians) are refugees outside Palestine, with no return on the horizon. Three million Palestinians live under the military occupation, on less than 14% of their former lands. We uphold the right of return of all Palestinians displaced by Israel.
We are outraged that this public celebration should take place in Boston. In Jenin, Israeli tanks demolished ambulances, injured civilians were left to die in the streets, and bodies still lie beneath the rubble. To the Israeli Defense Forces, anything that moves is a target: reports of the IDF shooting at children, the elderly, the disabled, physicians, and members of the press have come almost daily.
We are protesting the Israeli state, the U.S. government that backs, arms and controls it to safeguard the profits of the U.S. oil companies, and the violent military occupation of Palestine.
