Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques spokesperson Ismael Guadalupe’s Statement on Korea after his return from a fact-finding tour on U.S. Military crimes in that country:
“ I was invited to study the truth about Korea. But I also learned about the USA military policies. I learned that the case of Vieques is not an isolated case, that there are many Vieques. In Korea, there is a Vieques called Maehyang-ri.
The most important thing is the need for solidarity. Vieques cannot remain isolated, we the “little” ones must unite to challenge the “big” ones. When we particularly look at the history that our Korean hosts told us, and more so, when we hear their songs, we can see the case of Puerto Rico. Korea had Japan, we had Spain. The U.S. maintains its troops in Puerto Rico as in Korea. What I saw in Korea makes me think on how the USA has always manipulated the truth. Has used all its resources to write history as they please. In their movies, they present themselves as the heroes, but when we went to the Korean villages, we saw who are the real heroes.
There is an immense debt to the Korean people, not only from the USA, but from all humanity. We must discharge that responsibility. The Korean’s demands must be fulfilled. Those of us who love peace, human rights and justice, must unite with the Korean people who, through their organizations, have placed demands that must be satisfied.
Korea cannot continue divided, the crimes committed against that nation cannot continue unpunished. Foreign military bases should not continue in Korean territory. The policy of divide and conquer has been discredited. We must stay behind the call for reunification. In terms of Maehyang-ri, it is a situation that you have to see in order to believe it. It is amazing how in a new millennium, a whole community is terrorized by flying fighter planes so low that in no other place is permitted. Shooting so close to the communities reminds us of real wars. Maehyang-ri is also a call to stop the destruction of our natural resources, to respect the right of poor families to live in peace. That the children have the same opportunities and rights as those who live in places where there are no threats of war. They have the right to a healthy life.

Before the struggle increased in Vieques, we had a situation similar to the one in Maehyang-ri: planes flying low, at different hours of the day and night; without any regard to the students at school. Since 1978-79, when our struggle intensified, they stopped flying over the civilian part of the island, although now and then a plane crosses over, however it is not the routine.

"Aquí la policía coreana está dentro del campo de tiro, en Vieques están fuera, pero en embos casos se utiliza la policía local para defender los intereses de la nación opresora".
Declaración sobre Corea de Ismael Guadalupe, líder del Comité de Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques luego de regresar de una gira investigadora sobre los crímenes de guerra cometidos por los EEUU en ése país:
“Fui invitado para estudiar la realidad Coreana, pero también aprendí sobre la política militar estadounidense. Aprendí que el caso de Vieques no es un solo caso, hay muchos Vieques. En Corea hay un Vieques llamado Maehyang-ri.
Lo más importante es la nacesidad de la solidaridad. Vieques no puede seguir sola; los pequeños tenemos que estar juntos para hacerle frente a los grandes. Cuando miramos en particular la historia que nos narraron los coreanos y aún más, cuando oímos sus canciones vemos el caso de Puerto Rico. Corea tuvo su Japón como nosotros tuvimos a España. Todavía se mantienen las tropas norteamericanas en Puerto Rico, como se mantienen en Corea. Lo visto en Corea me hace pensar en cómo Estados Unidos siempre ha distorsionado y manipulado la verdad. Ha utilizado todos sus recursos para escribir la historia que a ellos les interesa. En sus películas ellos se presentan como los héroes pero cuando visitamos las villas en Corea vemos quiénes son los héroes de verdad.
Hay una deuda enorme, no de los EEUU solamente, sino de la humanidad, para con los coreanos. Y hay que descargar ésa responsabilidad. Las demandas de ellos hay que hacerlas cumplir. Los que somos amantes de la paz, de los derechos humanos y de la justicia, tenemos que cerrar filas alrededor de los ciudadanos coreanos que exigen a través de sus organizaciones, demandas que se deben cumplir.

No puede seguir una Corea dividida, no puede seguir unos crímenes impunes. No pueden seguir unas bases militares extranjeras en suelo coreano. No se puede seguir echando coreanos contra coreanos. Ya la política de dividir para vencer está desacreditada. Hay que hacer coro al llamado por la reunificación. En cuanto a Maehyang-ri, hay que verlo para creerlo. Hay que ver cómo en un nuevo milenio se aterroriza a toda una comunidad sobrevolando a niveles tan bajos que en ningún otro lugar es permitido. Disparando tan cerca de las comunidades que nos hacen recordar las guerras de verdad. También Maehyang-ri es el llamado a detener la destrucción de nuestros recursos naturales, para que se respete el derecho a las familias humildes de vivir en paz. A que unos niños tengan el mismo derecho que los que viven en sitios donde la amenaza de guerra no existe. Tienen derecho a una vida saludable.
Antes que se acrecentara la lucha en Vieques, la situación era similar a la de Maehyang-ri. Aviones sobrevolando bajo, a distintas horas sin el más mínimo respeto a los estudiantes que pudieran estar en clases. Desde el 1978-79, cuando la lucha se arrecia en Vieques, dejaron de sobrevolar la parte civil, aunque siempre uno que otro se cuela, pero no es la rutina.
¡Paz para Vieques, Paz para Corea!
¡Tropas de EEUU fuera de Corea y de Puerto Rico!
