Daewoo workers fight GM and globalization

There will be a special IAC meeting this Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at 6:30PM to hear about the struggle of the Korean Daewoo workers against GM's takeover and globalization policies.

General Motors, the world's largest auto-producer, is currently meeting with the South Korean government-owned Korean Development Bank to take over the Daewoo Auto Company.  GM is also the world's largest industrial benefactor of the US globalization drive to dominate and control the global markets.  GM's globalization and investing policies have built plants in more than 25 countries.  Their cost cutting, consolidation, and downsizing across continents has been a disaster.  It has led to waves of plant closings, mass layoffs of auto workers, and the misery that globalization brings to the population as a whole.

Recently, GM executives met with bank officials at a secret location outside South Korea to plot the takeover of three Daewoo manufacturing plants, all the marketing and financial operations, as well as a number of plants abroad.  Daewoo is the third largest auto plant in South Korea.  GM has already announced plans to shut down the Inchon plant which will add to the 7,000 jobs that have been lost.

Daewoo auto workers have been courageously fighting back against the GM takeover.  They occupied the plants for weeks early in the year, with the backing of the Korean Confederation of Labor, a network of organized union affiliates.  Government troops and police shot, tear-gassed, and beat them.  They were forcibly removed from the plant and arrested along with hundreds of supporters outside the gates of the plant.  They are still picketing the plants in spite of the brutal assault.

A delegation of them are presently touring the US to confront GM and gather support to save their jobs and their plants.  They marched into a GM stockholders meeting in Washington, DC where they opened up a banner and were promptly thrown out while they were chanting. "NO GM.  HANDS OFF DAEWOO MOTOR."

They will be in New York City from June 10-12, 2001, and will present their critical struggle to fight against GM's globalization policies to take over their auto plants.  They need your support.  Please join us at a special IAC Tuesday meeting on the 12th at 6:30PM.
