Ramsey Clark: Iran/Iraq and the dangers of endless war

Tuesday, January 17, will mark the 15th anniversary of the beginning of the U.S. war against the people of Iraq.  It was on January 17, 1991 that Operation Desert Storm began, with U.S. bombers initiating what would be years of terror and bloodshed.  Under Administrations from both war parties, this criminal aggression has continued, without respite, and today the situation in Iraq is horrific.  Untold thousands of Iraqis are already dead or maimed.  Despite Bush Administration claims about rebuilding, half of the population of Iraq has no access to potable water.  Most have electricity for two hours a day at best.  The price of fuel for cooking, heating, and driving in this oil-rich nation has increased six-fold.  The majority of the population lacks even basic medical care.

Martin Luther King, Jr., in criticizing another illegal war, said, “The bombs in Vietnam explode at home,” and this is just as true for the war in Iraq today.  The Bush Administration’s war is coming back to cities in the U.S. as seen in the tragic devastation and loss of life in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, cuts in spending for education, housing, and healthcare, and increased repression and domestic surveillance.

In the midst of this crisis in Iraq, there are dangers of even new wars, as the warmongers of Washington and Wall Street threaten Iran, Syria, North Korea, Venezuela, and other targets.  The Bush Administration and the corporate media have launched a new campaign of demonization against the people of Iran, using the same old lines about "weapons of mass destruction," and media outlets worldwide are declaring that the Bush Administration has already made plans for a massive military campaign against the people of Iran.

These ominous developments mean that the antiwar movement must redouble our efforts to stop the horrors of endless war and put Bush and all those responsible on trial for war crimes.  The only solution is for people to mobilize in the streets and build a massive movement to say, "Bring the Troops Home Now!"

Join us on January 17, when Ramsey Clark will address a major meeting at Community Church, at  40 E. 35th St., in Manhattan, at 6:30 p.m.  This meeting, which will be web-streamed and pod cast internationally, will address the horrors of 15 years of bipartisan war against the people of Iraq, the dangers of endless war, and what we must do to stop it.

Ramsey Clark has been an important and consistent voice of opposition to U.S. aggression in Iraq during the 15 years of war and sanctions.   He traveled to Iraq during the U.S. bombing in 1991 and recently visited under the current occupation.  He visited Iraq every year of the U.S.-imposed starvation sanctions  and led an international campaign against these sanctions which--according to the U.N--cost the lives of over 1 ½ million Iraqis.

Today the overwhelming majority of the people in the U.S. and worldwide are opposed to the war.  This opposition will only grow as the Bush Administration becomes more isolated.  Voices grow louder each day calling for Bush’s impeachment and trial for war crimes.

But this growing opposition will bring change only if it is reflected in the streets--politicians start wars, but only the people will stop them.  It’s up to us to organize and turn this growing anger into a massive movement to demand, “Bring the Troops Home Now!”

We hope to see you on January 17 at the Community Church where we can stand together to oppose this criminal war and occupation!

We appreciate your support and involvement.  For those of you who can make a donation to help to build this movement—whether or not you can attend—please contribute at http://iacenter.org/iacdon ate.shtml
