28 Aug 2002--A delegation led by former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark today visited the Basra, Iraq hospital where survivors of Sunday's U.S. bombing raid are being treated. Eight civilians were killed in the bombing and nine others wounded in the attack.

The peace and fact-finding mission includes: Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, co-founder of the Partnership for Civil Justice, a Washington DC-based law firm specializing in civil rights and civil liberties; and member of A.N.S.W.E.R. coalition steering committee Brian Becker, Co-Director of the International Action Center; and Member of A.N.S.W.E.R. coalition steering committee Kaddouri Al-Kaysi of the Committee in Solidarity with the Iraqi People; and Johnnie Stevens of the People's Video Network.

After visiting the hospital in Basra, Mr. Clark debated a Pentagon spokesperson, Lt. Col. David Lapan on the national Pacifica Radio show, "Democracy Now." Clark emphasized the illegality and immorality of the U.S.-British-imposed "No-Fly Zones" which have covered two-thirds of Iraq for more than a decade, and the criminality of the continued U.S. air attacks and sanctions against Iraq and its people.(To hear the entire debate go to: http://www.webactive.com/pacifica/demnow/dn20020827.html )

TARIQ AZIZ, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER OF IRAQ, SENDS TO RAMSEY CLARK CONDOLENCES FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACKS

Following below is the text of the letter, which shows that the meaning of 9/11 should be used to stop U.S. aggression towards Iraq, not as an excuse for it.

"Now that one year has gone by since the tragic events of 11 September took place, I wish to express to you and through you, to the families of the victims of those events, our deepest condolences.  Our sympathy towards you and your people in this respect is compounded by our feelings here in Iraq towards the suffering inflicted upon our people throughout twelve years of continued embargo and aggression. The number of victims of the 9/11 event in the United States has exceeded three thousand human beings.  The victims lost in Iraq, on the other hand, as a result of the embargo and aggression, has been well in excess of one-and-a-half million human beings, including children, women and men.  This number remains on the increase to date.

"The fact that such huge numbers of victims can be lost in only two places in the world, Iraq and the United States, underscores the level and magnitude of the tragedy caused by conduct incompatible with peaceful means and outside the realm of international law.  It also underlines the extent to which the world remains in need of peace, stability and cooperation, guided by the principles of goodwill, love, justice and peace.

"Proceeding from these principles, I reiterate my condolences to you and to the families of the victims.  I also wish to express gratitude to you and to all the good people of the United States who have expressed their sympathy towards the suffering brought to the people of Iraq by a ceaseless blockade and aggression. I also wish to thank all those who stand courageously against the schemes of military aggression currently planned by the Administration against the people of Iraq who will continue to defend their freedom, independence and territorial integrity, along with the high values in which they believe.

"With my highest esteem,
Tariq Aziz
Deputy Prime Minister
Baghdad
11 September 2002"
