Execution = Escalation
Bring the Troops Home Now!

Today, as the death toll of U.S. troops passes 3,000 and the number of Iraqi casualties exceeds 600,000, the execution of Saddam Hussein signals Bush’s intention to escalate the war against the people of Iraq as he plans to send tens of thousands of more troops to maintain the occupation.

This war was never about bringing democracy to Iraq. This war has always been about oil and corporate profits.

The U.S. has installed, supported, armed, and defended dictatorships around the world when it suited the interests of corporate profits. From the Shah of Iran to Mubutu in the Congo to Pinochet in Chile to the dictatorships in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, and Pakistan, the U.S. has supported some of the most brutal regimes in history when it served Wall Street’s interests. Saddam Hussein was executed for standing in the way of U.S. domination of the Middle East.

Iraq today is under complete U.S. domination. Execution is just another facet of colonial occupation, along with the torture and killing of civilians in Abu Ghraib, Haditha, and throughout Iraq.

The people of the U.S. and around the world have made it clear that they want the occupation to end. Bush plans instead to send 30,000 more U.S. youths to die and be maimed in Iraq just as the count of U.S. dead goes over 3,000. Republicans and Democrats are refusing to heed the voice of the U.S. voters, who have chosen to end the war.
We must stay out in the streets to bring an end to the war ourselves.

The billions that have been spent on this war--and the more than $100 billion that Bush will ask for this spring -- have been robbed from the people here who need the money for jobs at a living wage, health care, affordable housing, education, and rebuilding the Gulf Coast.
