FAO: US residents and US media
On Saturday, 28th September there will be a huge "Don't Attack Iraq" demonstration in central London.
It promises to be easily the biggest anti-war demonstration in Britain since 11 September 2001 (marches in November and April attracted more than 100,000) and one of the biggest anti-war actions in Western Europe in many years.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair is George Bush's key ally. British bombers and British troops are expected to join US forces if the war against Iraq goes ahead. Yet opinion polls here consistently reveal massive opposition to the planned war - opposition that will be visible on the streets of London on 28 September.
Tony Blair risks losing the support of the British public and his own party by continuing to endorse Bush's policies.
According to a survey carried out for the Daily Mirror newspaper by ICM Research, 71 per cent of people in Britain oppose joining a war on Iraq without the approval of the UN. 51% consider George Bush a threat to world peace, and 22% consider him the biggest threat to world peace.
The demonstration on 28th September is jointly organised by the Stop the War Coalition and the Muslim Association of Britain. It is supported by eleven national labour unions, including the country's largest, UNISON, as well as numerous religious organizations, Members of Parliament and Members of the European Parliament, the Mayor of London, human rights and community-based campaigns, along with prominent individuals from all walks of life. (For details see www.stopwar.org.uk )
We believe it is in the interest of people in the USA to be aware of the widespread and mounting opposition in Britain to the planned war against Iraq. We urge the media in the USA to report the truth about British public opinion to the people of the USA.
Please feel free to circulate this message as widely as possible and to use this information in media releases and statements.

MESSAGE OF SOLIDARITY FROM UK STOP THE WAR COALITION
DEAR FRIENDS, PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL OUR FRIENDS AND FELLOW PEACE MAKERS!
Greetings from the anti war movement in Britain. Every time we hear about the growing U.S. opposition to Bush and Blair's war, it gives us all a tremendous boost.
We thank you for all your messages of support.
The Stop the War Coalition is preparing for a historical demonstration in London on Saturday 28 September that is expected to be the biggest anti war demonstration this country has ever seen. It is backed by 12 national trade unions, all the major peace groups, many Labour MP's, the whole of the left and numerous Muslim and Christian organisations. Thousands will fill the streets of London - people of many communities united in their opposition and determination to stop this war.
Polls continue to show the majority of people in our country are against an attack on Iraq. Our campaign will not stop until we have scrapped the plans of the warmongers.
These warmongers - George Bush and Tony Blair and their coalition for waging war, always speak of the 'special relationship' between Britain and the US but it is we - the people of the UK and US - the peacemakers, who have a special relationship and it is we who are standing 'shoulder to shoulder' - FOR PEACE.
We believe that together we can stop this madness.
Think of us on the 28th as we think of you.
In peace and Solidarity,
The Stop the War Coalition - UK
