Urgent: Ask Caricom to Support Haiti's Constitution
Dear Friends, brothers and sisters --
There is an urgent situation in Haiti, as you know. In addition, the Caricom countries -- meeting on March 25-26, 2004 -- are facing intense pressure from US authorities to renounce or weaken their welcoming and support for President Aristide and Haitian democracy.
Bush and Chirac are threatening these small Caribbean countries, twisting their arms to try and get them to renounce or moderate their stand opposing the US- and French-backed coup d'etat in Haiti. And Bush and Chirac want the Caricom nations to renounce or moderate their denunciation of the middle-of-the-night kidnapping of Haiti's president from his home by a phalanx of heavily armed US soldiers.
The Caricom leaders need to hear a groundswell of public opinion opposing the coup d'etat and supporting President Aristide, to show them that they are not alone in facing down the regime-changers in Washington, D.C.
My friend, there is something you can do to help. It will only take a few minutes of your time.
First, read the brief "Organizational Petition on Haiti" that follows.
Secondly, use your influence to have the Petition signed on to by organizations, or by officers or representatives of organizations, as well as by prominent individuals. Return the message indicating this endorsement to the email address below.
Thirdly, disseminate this message as widely as possible.
Timely action is what will make a difference. Please do this now, or some time today.
