March to Prospect Park, Brooklyn
In response to the U.S.-organized coup d’etat in Haiti, thousands will take to the streets of Brooklyn on Saturday, March 6, to say, “Return President Aristide to Haiti!” and “Respect Haiti’s Constitution and Democracy!” There are more than 300,000 Haitians living in Brooklyn.
This demonstration is part of an international reaction to the U.S. occupation of Haiti and the kidnapping of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. On Friday, March 5, tens of thousands of Haitians marched on the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, chanting “Bush terrorist!” Many held up their hands with five fingers extended, shouting “Aristide five years!”
Tomorrow’s rally and march will draw thousands of Haitians and supporters, outraged at the kidnapping of the democratically elected President of Haiti. Speakers will include Ray LaForest, Haitian activist and union organizer, Congressperson Major Owens, Attorney Michael Tarif Warren, the Rev. Lucius Walker of IFCO, Pat Chin of the International Action Center, Khadouri Alkaysi of the Committee to Support the Iraqi People, Larry Holmes of International ANSWER, as well as representatives from the Lavalas Family, Haiti Progres, and other Haitian and community organizations.
The organizer of the demonstration is the Committee to Respect the Five-Year Mandate of President Aristide (Lavalas Family, Patisan Jezikri, Haiti Action Committee, Haiti Support Network, Ajoupa, OBNH, Leve Kanpe, PPN Support Committee, the International Action Center, and many regional organizations).
Additional Endorsers include: the Bolivarian Circle, Casa Mexico, the Committee to Support the Iraqi People, Dominican Workers Party, Guyanese-American Workers United, Haitians and Dominicans for Justice and Democracy, International Friends and Family of Mumia Abu-Jamal, International ANSWER, the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO), New York City Labor Against the War, Peoples’ Video Network, and the Support Network for an Armed Forces Union (SNAFU).
