Murrow/White RoomsOn Thursday, March 11 at 12 noon there will be a panel discussion / press conference at the National Press Club in the Murrow/White Rooms featuring members of a U.S. delegation that met with overthrown Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in the Central African Republic (C.A.R.).
The speakers will reveal details of Mr. Aristide’s version of the U.S. role in his departure. While the State Department and White House accounts that describe Mr. Aristide’s departure as “voluntary” have been widely covered in the media, this panel will offer a rare opportunity to hear President Aristide’s own detailed account of his last days in Haiti.
Joining the panel will be Congressman John Conyers and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Speakers include:
Congressman John Conyers
Kim Ives, journalist, Haiti Progres
Johnnie Stevens and Sara Flounders, International Action Center
Brian Concannon, acting in the capacity of President Aristide’s lawyer
Katherine Kean, a friend of President Aristide
Ray Laforest, Haiti Support Network, unionist
Rev. Graylan Hagler, Senior Minister, Plymouth Congregational ChurchThe Curtain of Silence that has surrounded President Aristide since the February 28/29 coup has now been significantly opened as a consequence of the work of the U.S. delegation that met with President Aristide on March 8 and the work carried out by members of the Congressional Black Caucus and others. Originally denied access to the president on March 7, the Central African Republic reversed its stance and allowed the delegation to meet with President Aristide on March 8 and also allowed him to speak openly at the first press conference since his arrival. The delegation held two private meetings with Mr. Aristide.
